  • On my next stop in my multi week sabbatical adventure I take the Raptor to it's natural habitat, DUNES! I embark on a journey through the amazing St. Anthony Sand Dunes, 10,000 acres of sand dunes located in eastern Idaho. Watch how an "overland build" can still kick up sand and have some high speed fun!

    Glad to see you enjoying your Raptor to its potential! I need to take a road trip from here in San Antonio and take my Magnetic Gray 2017 Raptor in the dunes. She has seen plenty of dirt and mud, but the desert is where she belongs! Great video man!

    Hey Wallen, I notice your Rigid light and the face plate is upside down because of how they mount. You can flip those by using a hex wrench to unscrew the bolts and flip the face plate. I did mine before I installed them. Just FYI.

      If you order the correct Rigid light you don’t need to do that.

    that was my first question was how well your custom stuff held up to that much fun. So glad to hear that the flood gates can be opened and everything stays intact. Great video and im looking to build a similar truck with a similar color. I want to build a 5.0 v8 with a full chip HHO mod, maybe try out the new 7.3L v8 supposedly coming out next year but still I would rather have something not boosted.

      Romullus oh yes, my goal is to make a great pre-runner Overlanding hybrid. There is some need for custom work, I had steel plates custom fabricated to better distribute rack load along bed rails, working well so far, check out rig walk vid to see.

    I’ve got a stock raptor and want to put a tepui on the bed like you did - now that you’ve had it for a while, any insights on the rack or the bed cover etc? Mine is also a DD so I want to be able to remove the tent when not going out camping. 👍🏼

    • @TheWhalen
      @TheWhalen  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jim B using KB voodoo rack with ReTrax cover. Rack allows for use of cover. ReTrax also had a cover with a channel built in for mounting rack, but not sure how sturdy that is. I'm liking my set up, but have to do a few custom mods to rack to make sure it's safe to go hard off-road, if you are just doing light trails it's fine as is. If you plan to toss truck around you should see the custom springs I did for rack at end of video. If you have the space, a lift or gantry crane can help remove rack quickly.

      @@TheWhalen You must, the Raptor pulls the x3. Due to the weight reduction the 1800 lb x3 is 4K lbs lighter and does 0-60 in 3.8 & soaks everything up easily. + X3 is cheaper to repair if you damage anything. Check out the x3 videos on my channel.

    Hey, I'm looking at getting a 2017 or 2018 Raptor. How many miles is too many for a used one?

    • @TheWhalen
      @TheWhalen  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For a 2018 I would say
      High miles - 60k+
      Average miles - 35-60k
      Low miles -under 35k
      For a 2017 add 5-10k to those tiers.
      This is all a ballpark guess mind you, assuming people drive their Raptor's as much as I do.

    12-13 psi and you would have been able to tackle the bigger and softer stuff. Next time.

    • @TheWhalen
      @TheWhalen  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I may have to try that, seems to me I’ll need to get some bead locks on first

    • @schkibz
      @schkibz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When we train folks in the dunes, 12-13 for a truck is generally fine without bead lock. In a Wrangler, I run 8-9 and have run as low as 6.5 without bead lock. A single PSI less will be noticed at the lower end (ie you will be able to make it up the dune you could not ascend just moments before).

    • @schkibz
      @schkibz 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes a tire does come off. Just have a floor jack and a compressor and can have it back on the rim in 15 minutes or so. :)

    Since you asked, my Raptor definitely sees desert action. These trucks are so great. Cool video.
    With all that overland gear and no rapid deflators? I highly recommend the style that pulls the valve like these: www.amazon.com/Smittybilt-2823-Rapid-Universal-Deflator/dp/B06WP6R917
    I also just built this and it works AMAZING: trail4runner.com/2018/05/06/diy-4-tire-inflation-system/
