    As I teenager in the Air Training Corps, I participated in a hike on the North York Moors , in winter, with snow on the ground, on quite a desolate landscape. Lead by our Senior NCO’s we became completely lost, certainly with respect to the route we were supposed to be following. A few were beginning to suffer from hypothermia, before the unfolding disaster was abandoned.
    Afterwards I studied the route, and the map. The mistake we made then , is being repeated in this video. I’m sure the author knows his stuff but he has cut his explanation disastrously short by omitting MAGNETIC VARIATION, as in VARIATION WEST COMPASS BEST, VARIATION EAST COMPASS LEAST.
    At the beginning of my flying career , I learnt the 1 in 60 Rule. 1 degree of error, flying 60 miles, will put you 1 (nautical) mile off track.
    With 6 degrees of magnetic variation, you don’t have walk far to be significantly off track.

    Pretty good but for me he should also mention that when following the direction of travel arrow you still need to make sure that the needle and North on the compass are lined up all the time when you stop/start on your journey. Would also have been good to mention following a landmark as you walk in the direction of travel.

      exactly!, "look" where you want to go, hill, tree, tree line, valley, something to "mark" your general direction of travel

    Many of you mention magnetic declination. Did you not notice that this guy is in the UK where there is hardly no mag declination. This probably why he didn't mention it at all. See Wikipedia or do a Google search. Magnetic declination varies both from place to place and with the passage of time. In the UK it is one degree 7 minutes west (London, 2014), and as the country is quite small that figure is fairly good for the whole of the country. It is reducing, and it is predicted that in about 2050 it will be zero. USA is a lot bigger, so declination varies a lot.

    • @bixbybixby6752
      @bixbybixby6752 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Right about that. With mag. declination sometimes it matters, sometimes it don't. Obviously in the UK it doesnt. But in N. America it can. Even then in GENERAL ways, depending on terrain, visual factors, distance of A-B line, etc., it still might not matter. Mostly a decision call for each person. Some people just always figure it in just to be failsafe.

    Sheesh, lighten up a little bit here everybody. He pretty much has it right. As mentioned, he is in the UK, where declination is essentially zero, so true North and magnetic north are one and the same. Everything here is pretty much correct, even if it's not quite the same way that you choose to do it.

    The very; very basic was interesting as I had not known all these years, Arrow points North and every other direction is shown, A fairly simple idea but I was clueless all these years including all 56 of them. Setting up a weather station and was interested to learn. I know it goes more in depth and I will be learning more about that aslo as you have shown here with using maps. Thanks!

  • @bixbybixby6752
    @bixbybixby6752 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    First part, you don't need to do all that. Just put the compass on the map anywhere, in any old position, turn the map under it till any grid line matches the magnetic needle (red north end towards map north of course) DONE.
    Second part, you don't HAVE TO orient a map in order to take a bearing from it ---though you CAN if you choose). A bearing is simply the degree of angle between your line of travel and grid north. Has nothing to do with what position the map is turned in (oriented or not). An oriented map simply makes everything on it line up with everything in the environment and this might be helpful visually. Unoriented map means they won't line up visually.

    To Two-Point-Four:
    Thank you for the video. Keep up the good work.
    To anyone out there who knows:
    I have a compass similar to the one in the video. However when I faced East the needle is pointing West, and when I face West, the needle points East. What am I doing wrong?
    Please help.

    There is magnetic north that the compass needle points to and which is different from true north which is the point on which the earth spins and which is what the lines on the map point to. THen there is grid north which varies very slightly from true north but not enough to really make any difference. At the bottom of the map it will gell you what the difference for that map is between true and magnetic north (and how much it varies from year to year because magnetic north moves around a bit

  • @allenheart582

    Because of the coming micronova, declination is moving much farther, and much faster and so declination information is likely incorrect My up-to-date declination is 30 degrees, 15 degrees off from the official declination for my area. but there is still a way to recalibrate magnetic declination using the shadow of sticks recording the path of the sun---rotation of the earth has not yet changed. First stick will show East. Mark it with a sharp stick pushed in. After a few minutes you can mark sun shadow travel where the shadow has moved - Push another stick in to mark West. Lay a straight stick from the E mark to the W mark. Geographic north or True North is 90 degrees from the E-W line. With your compass pointing toward True North, note how far off your compass is now. That is your true up-to-date declination. More on micronova in my 2nd book, Surviving the Micronova: This Train Is on the Tracks is available now.

    We needed to SEE that compass up close and personal, just as you see it!
    Which needle end? How do we know for sure we're not going South instead of North?
    I recommend a complete re do on this, if you're really trying to help BEGINNERS.

    If the red arrow is always pointing north, then how can it point to the direction of travel? This was very confusing.
    The sun came up over there, that's East, behind me is West, the left is North and the right is South. Easy peasy.

    This is wrong as the guy sets the compass (magnetic bearing) along the north/south grid line (grid bearing) without applying a grid/magnetic variation. This will lead to the wrong destination depending on the actual variation and distance traveled.

    i use a boat compass . as its big to see it in the dark but there are 3 norths ( GRIDE NORTH } what your video is . then you have ( TRUE NORTH ) then ( MAGNETIC NORTH} and true north to magnetic you look up the variation IF IT IS ON YOUR MAP 7 WEST VARIATION YOU PUT ON 7 . IF IT IS SAY 5 EAST YOU TAKE AWAY 5 WEST IS BEST MORE + EAST IS LESS -

    “always point to the north..” that is NOT entirely true is it?
    If someone stands in Northern Greenland, and uses a compass to determine ‘where is North’ the direction that the compass shows - is literally EXACT SOUTH. And to get to the real North pole, from that location with that magnetic compass indication, you would need to travel EXACTLY EAST, so I would say you need to play with your compass more before you make such a bald statement.

    For a vid called "How to accurately read a compass", it's not accurately labeled because of the inaccuracy of not adjusting for true north from magnetic north. If you're going to teach people survival skills, learn the correct method before you teach other people how to be wrong and lost in the bush. Thumbs down.

    wut? all that stuff is unnecessary as long as you know all of the four cardinal points...just take a compass, watch the north position, and turn the upper part of your map towards north, everything else is simple, in that case he wanted to go southwest, there was no need of confusing people like that with all of those steps, in case someone doesn't know the four directions you just know you gotta turn back and left, and you'll be going southwest is just common sense

    • @24masks
