  • The Fisher 800T stands out among all of the other receivers of this timeframe. It has presets for tuning in radio stations at the press of a button. Quite unique. In addition, it has an autoscan, all electronic function to go the next radio station.

in the late '50s Delco made a radio for Cadillac that had "WonderBar" tuning... very cool. that tuner-centric Fisher receiver is a crossroads of early-peak FM (can't have enough dials, switches & meters... like a fine Collins rig) & early solid state... when the target was to sound as good as tubes, w/ low maintenance, high reliability & lasting a lifetime (cheap came later... as did the sound quality). my own path to component audio included being allowed to operate a family friend's Fisher in his listening room when I was 11 yrs old (while the adults had cocktails in the living room). selecting numerous stations from the nearby city was magical - the full, dynamic sound of a live orchestra broadcast launched my enjoyment of classical music, to boot.

That jogs a memory. I have a very large extended family (my mother was one of 15 children), so we constantly had relatives visit or we were visiting them, etc.. Partly due to the number of individuals being in one place, but also party due to just a different era, we (the kids) were typically expected to be doing our own thing while the adults did their thing (playing cards, having cocktails, etc). I have tried to occasionally have such an event today, but I get looked at by my wife like I have nine eyes as EVERYTHING has to firstly be kid focused, then if the adults can figure out how to entertain themselves that is fine, but certainly not a priority.

This is the most unusual and coolest receiver I have ever seen. Thanks for sharing. My dad owned cars with the push button preset radios and was never happy when I changed the stations. LOL Thanks for another trip down memory lane.

It is definitely different. Quite a unique perspective on Fisher's part to go after a specific market segment with a tuner focused offering. Also, I just HAD to change at least ONE preset in the family car to hear some music I wanted to hear. LOL

It was one of the first receivers to use the new tunable varactor component that had been developed.

That Fisher goes for a very pretty penny right now. I saw a few of them that go for no less than $2000.

I had a 220T which did not have the tunamatic. I believe T was for transistor

I do not believe so as there were quite a number of other transistor models with no letter designation. Oddly, there was a 500TX that looks to be the same as the 800T, I "think" the only difference is that the 800T has the ability to switch the voltage for other regions, so perhaps it was intended for over seas sales as well.

You mentioned Asians (perhaps mostly Japanese) are buying these up. My question is, are radio frequencies in Japan the same as in America? If not then how do they use the tuner section?
I wish Fisher made their speakers as good as their receivers.

Asia market. Not sure if specifically Japan or not. Tuner bands do differ slightly in at least Japan, to my knowledge. So they will work, just not cover the full band. Again, I am not sure if the interest even lies in the tuner, it could simply be rarity of the model as they are hard to come by.

I've got a few of the 700 t's. I gave up on them as they always had sound issues versus left and right channel. Never understood why people liked them so much, they didn't really sound that spectacular to me. Sound is very subjective

I am still curious too what is driving the demand. Let me know if you find out! :-)
