These weldors know exactly what they are doing. Down hill is the norm for cross country. These guy's don't walk, they run across country. Damn good hands the pipeliners are.
These guys are talented, I have been in the Plumbers and Pipe fitters Union for 32 years and they encourage uphill vertical, but a lot of our pipe welders do down hill root passes and there is nothing wrong with that. I do both and really the down hill root pass I really prefer now after years of doing up hill vertical root pass.
Gravity is gravity, I am almost sure that going dawn is not ok, seems basic from sound, i always start down e going up, finishing on the top e then restating dawn, never faild, i weld low pressure, 0,5 gas ,end water max 6 bar ,pipes max 16 inch, 8mm ,end 4 ,6 ,8 ø -4 mm
Sehr schönes Video !!! Welche Schweißaggregate verwendet Ihr ? Wir haben welche von MOSA. Verwendet Ihr Elektroden von Phoenix,Oerlikon oder Erotrode etc.? Wie ist die Bezahlung bei Euch ?
Done all kinds of welding myself from underground steam to stainless to orbital. Been in power plants, trenches pharmaceutical plants and everything and anything in between and have learned that you gotta find what works for you and stick with that and be able to do whatever procedure in any position you're thrown into. You gotta be able to adapt to any gap thrown your way, if it's tight rip it in hot down hand and if you get a bigger gap then turn your heat down and go up. Local 537BOSTON
Obviously You have never read a weld procedure and never worked to one . This is the criteria by which the welding is done to meet the standards required by the contract .Metalurgical, ultrasonic X-ray ETC..

I'm no pipe welder and I'm not looking for a youtube argument but wouldnt they weld this with something like a 7016 or 7018? Its just I'm not sure if an electrode like a 6010 - 6013 would be acceptable in Australia so I'm just curious where these welds are done and what they're for?
Check the keyhole at 2.23 when he changes rods. He is dragging that keyhole down with him, the weld runs from the inside out. Bead welders are the most highly paid. The helper then grinds the weld and leaves the bead with wagon tracks. The next step is the hot pass, where the stovie cuts out the wagon tracks and leaves an inverted vee shape behind to be buffed out with a wire wheel, by the helper. Next come the fillers and cappers, who finish off the job.
Mig is used sometimes in fabrication shops. Outside you'd get hella more porosity because your shielding gas would be blown away by the wind. I think or also believe the shop would have to ndt test before usage Mig and that costs thousands of dollars. Stick works best outside especially E6010 for the root pass.
Looks like those 2 guys prefer a wide gap for the root pass. We always ran a tight gap and crank the heat and skate along laying in a small bead with less irregularities. But ..if that works for them... fine
I mean...why it should be a gap anyway ?? or it's because of the high pressure (h.p) pipe that we need to add a groove gap for the root pass ?..idk..i think that it just make the job more difficult.
With stick welding there is a need for at least a slight gap to bury the rod in the gap and assure complete penetration. However if there is no gap and the land face is thin then you could weld with zero gap and butt the 2 pieces of beveled metal together and weld it that way as long as the end result is the same.Over the years, as I welded more and more pipe and experimented when I could, ( always experimenting when you can ) I found it is better to weld with what is considered a tight gap or very tight gap while often enough the gap closes up completely as the pipe begins to get hot and all the more so with small diameter pipe...which is actually a good thing and all the more so with small diameter pipe as having a wide gap on small diameter pipe is all the more challenging to weld because of the joint area becoming to damn hot and you have to either turn the heat down too much to control the weld puddle or skip ahead or do a lot of "whipping" and manipulation of the arc to control the excessive heat and the large keyhole developing and excess molten metal involved. If the gap is tight or non existent then you can perform the weld up hand or down hand by jamming the rod in-between with a degree of force while moving faster while working the arc in-between and working the angle of the rod so there is not excessive build up on the inside of the pipe so that the root pass sits say 1 mm high on the average and you can see the uniformity of the bead all around the clock ..so to speak. When performing an up hand bead with a tight gap or no gap with an appropriate land thickness you have to avoid the rod angle being point back at too steep of an angle or you will create excessive build up of the bead especially starting at the 4 o'clock to the 2 o'clock position while that particular area of reverse clockwise positioning is a little bit tricky trying to come up while lifting your arm and elbow while also rotating your shoulder and at the same time more or less forced to rotate your hand in a manner that the rod length stays at an angle of about 10 to 20 degrees to avoid excessive build up and undercut that will occur if the angle of the rod is "tilted" back too much. When told I had to weld up hand on all the pipe and according to the codes enforced by the welding inspectors on the jobsites, I learned to do as they asked but I performed the up-hand root pass bead in the same or similar manner as performing the root pass bead by way of down hand positioning and simply got used to comfortably dragging the rod "up" and around the circumference of the pipe and learning to perform better stops and starts relative to what occurs when you "re-fire" the arc and start to blend the arc and molten weld puddle into a stop / start keyhole point and performed in the up hand position verses the down hand positon.Try it and you will soon learn the root pass welding can be performed in such a manner while it will become a matter of routine after the initial experimentation and the learning curve and finally with experience. Also, just for fun try to do a cap pass with 7018 welding rod ( Down Hand ) while the down hand 7018 cap pass looks smooth and uniform.Cheers
Well my friend, it also depends on if you weld in a Union, now I'm not exactly sure what Union this is, but I know that these guys go through training, I'm one of them that is in school right now for it, they know how to control the slag and they don't use the welding rods like 6010, 7018, 7024, they use welding rods that are made for pipes to be welded, that don't drip in slag when you weld with them
but the guy am seeing in the video is welding down-hand in the penetration bead am quiet confuse if the weld won't be slag inclusion will have good penetration.
Hell I'm in welding classes and all we do is uphill, downhill, vertical up, vertical down, and overhead, downhand? Must of been made for girls I agree with you on that, if your gonna be a pipeline welder, you have to know everysingle welding position there is, downhand I am pretty sure, is not a welding position.
1/4 inch gap? In my world that is unacceptable, I have been welding pipe for maaaany years, and if a fitter gave me a 0.250" he would not be around long. If a welder was to as for a 1/4 gap in my world, chances are he would be run, as the extra filler metal, heat input and time would not be acceptable on a tight time-frame. I have only ever seen a handful of procedures that even allow such a large gap, and those are certainly not used low expansion carbon steel alloys.

Downhill is supposed to be easier than uphill... do they give you a choice in your union?

hasslefree omg that was a very long comment ! and very informative ! thank you so much for your time !
They are welding conventionally down hand, OK for tie ins but mainline tight gap crank it up and drag the bead in
Why no to go uphill? It is more comfortable, I think.
es brauch sehr viel zeit
J'aime beaucoup
did you film this with a potato?
son muy buenos los vídeos
Does he wave side to side as he do uphill
Hello, I want to work with a certificate to prepare the oil pipe and gas, how to reach you two years of news
1104 down hill stovepipe. nice job
6010 Lincoln Fleet Welds is the name of the Game! If anyone has a clue what I mean they will know exactly what I mean 🤓
Thing is, a stick welder is much more portable and doesn't require gas or anything and doesn't care how the weather is either.

@Lawrence Hanlan i believe its this way. Root pass-6018 1/8".
Filler and cap-7018 3/32".
Hope this helps answer your question.

To big of a gap!! Way to much rod going in there

Ok so my Q is how much is the Hr pay to do this
yea, looks like 1/8" or 1/4" inch gap, thats what we had in school

What's known as stoving
Indeed it is Richard and the name originates from a technique developed in the 1920's for the fast welding of thin wall stove piping sections.
