    THANK YOU for a GREAT video! Also, thank you to the folks who put down some very informative comments! I teach welding (ZERO underwater experience!), and I have students who ask about underwater careers. Like I say, the video shows a lot of what is involved. After watching, I was more able to appreciate the difficulties that you face in your job. THANK YOU!

    Respect, Im just a newbie in stick welding, so it kinda feels nice that its about the same process underwater.. I heard it pays well... And also has a 50%+ mortality rate or so I heard... Music is GREAT.

    • @descochin
      @descochin  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, welcome to welding. You are in many ways correct about the process being similar however, the technique is very different. And for the mortality rate being 50%+ I'm happy to say is grossly incorrect. It's something I do these days, researching, analyzing, statistics of diver injuries, all for various interest groups and companies. Not sure where you might have heard that. Thank you for the compliment, Cheers!

    Thanks! I would like to post more but recent jobs have me diving in water with no visibility.
    To answer your question, I work for a company. I was with one of the larger inland dive companies for ten years then quit when I questioned their integrity when it came to safety. But lucky for me I found another company that is doing great.
    You too, be safe!

    im almost 15, freshman in highschool and i took metals class. and first unit was welding. i loved it!!! we only did stick welding but we start up again in a month or so, and do both stick and wire feed. i would like to get a welding job cause i hear its good money

  • @descochin
    @descochin  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yes. Make sure your O2 is set with correct pressure. Angle your rod and move it away from you, like "pushing" don't drag it to you. This is helpful for long flat surfaces. MAKE SURE WHATEVER YOU ARE CUTTING IS PROPERLY VENTILATED TO PREVENT TRAPPED GAS! This is especially trick when cutting sheet pile, the knuckles can trap gas. Do not burn the rods as far as you would a weld rod as this is a quick way to burn your gasket behind the retaining collet. Once that is gone you will get shocked

    The turn over rate is quite significant in this field. The difficult part is for one to be patient once hired in. The work can be long, strenuous and as Bill Dickson (comments bellow) pointed out; cold and miserable at times, being out in the elements.....sometimes it can be amazing. The difficult task is for one to find a reputable and safe company to work for. DO NOT forgo safety.
    It also depends on your situation. The best way to enter this industry is single and willing to live out of a suitcase for a while.

    This industry is a love/hate relationship on the grounds of work, pay, and companies. My number one suggestion out of all advise out there is safety. Go with a company that is truly safe and lives by that standard. Second thing is initiative. Don't stand around. Learn fast and stay engaged with the task at hand.

    eric tencamp Your welcome Eric. But by no means is anything impossible; I just would hate to see someone go through hardships that might have been unforeseen by an individual.
    To give you an idea also, even the young people; let's say 20 are in a class; 18 will graduate;12 will go on to find work; maybe from those 12, 7 of them will work for a year, and then possibly 2or3 will work over one year from the original 20 and then one might go on to see 10yrs.
    *Please note these are estimates, not actual figures*

    Hey! No problem dude. Just be patient and research the companies you go work for. Safety is paramount. But like most technical fields seniority plays a part, but good companies know talent when they see it. Be mindful that you work for a company that gets contracted, so when they have work so will you (be aware a lot of work is seasonal). Stay safe and stay focused and you will do fine.
    Cheers, brah!

I have not got to actually talk to a commercial diver so your thoughts and opinion would help tremendously!

  • @descochin

    The US is beginning to accept IMCA dive certification. I do know a few Americans who went to Canadian schools and came back to work in the US. As far as work visas, I honestly don't know I'm really sorry I can't be of more help with that. Companies are always looking for entry level divers; there is a high turn over rate in this industry. For those who stay and don't mind travel it can be rewarding. As far as Canadian experience it doesn't matter where. Any experience is great for lob hunting.

  • @descochin
    @descochin  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    In many situations it can be due to visibility, accessibility to weld location, surface condition of metal and so on. But the principle is fairly easy. Once you have correct amperage concentrate on rod angle and travel speed and your rod pretty much feeds itself.
    Couple things. Make sure your surface is completely prep'd and you are comfortable with your body location to reach your weld. Do not continue if you think you messed up...stop immediately, clean your spot and restart.

  • @descochin
    @descochin  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not necessarily. There is plenty of ambient light on clear dives to assist with positioning, ie. starts and rod angle etc. The thing with underwater welding is that turbidity can affect visibility as well. I personally use a #7 lens on almost all welding. For burning I use a #5, or for example I'm in th Ohio River this week and will burn with no lens seeing as how there is absolutely zero viz.

    Only if you go by way of union companies. Non union (mostly inland) the need of the company dictates whether they will train you as an underwater welder. For example when I hired on to a company a while ago there was a lot of weld repairs needed for GE and Westinghouse so the dive company set up a program to meet their goals. Guys straight out of dive school were sent through the weld program.

    • @Flightstar
      @Flightstar 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Brian h The problem with many in the high paying trades, is having the ability to save your money and not waste it on non stop parting and buying useless toys. Many leave their earnings behind in the towns they worked, being bilked out of most of it through sheer stupidity. Look up, building the Alaskan pipeline- The American experience. Welders made damned good money in those days, Shit, you do a few years on jobs like that and invest your money wisely, you will do very well. sadly many got caught up in drugs, gambling, drinking and whores, and left with little at the end. What's that they say about a fool and his money?

    • @BUGPLAYS

      It does require schooling but it doesn't require a college degree no. Now I can't speak for underwater welding as i have to finish my welding cert before i can go to school for that but as far as regular welding goes it isn't really all that hard, it's getting it to look good thats a bitch sometimes. But if you're like me and aren't terribly book smart and do better with your hands as far as learning goes, you'll probably beast right through it.

    Im 18. i have been in welding classes for 3 years throughout my highschool career. the teacher considers me an advanced student, and when i graduate ill do a welding program in college for a year before going to a dive school that teaches underwater welding. its safe to say that im pretty decent above ground, what aspects change underwater? i.e travel speed, amps, arc gaps, etc.

    Isn't underwater welding super dangerous? or does the water conduct the electricity away from you?

    • @descochin
      @descochin  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not to sound cliché but anything can be dangerous without proper precautions. Welding underwater is as safe as the crew who is running the job. The way I describe it underwater, is imagining an "aura" around the stinger when it is "hot". If your hand is within that field and uninsulated you will feel an uncomfortable shocking sensation. It will not kill you, just piss you off ;) A simple latex glove can solve that problem. Electricity always flows in the path of least resistance, so just make sure no exposed skin is touching the work surface. Always make sure your equipment is in good condition ie. cables aren't cut, the stinger is functioning properly, etc.
      These along with many other safety topics should be addressed before partaking in any underwater welding/burning activity and you will have a safe experience.
      HOWEVER, by far the most important aspect (it can kill a diver) is to always use DC (direct current) and NOT AC (alternate current) when underwater.

    Although I am only 14 years old, I believe that I want to go into an underwater welding career when I get older but I wanted to ask how long the hours welding, and what the typical salary is/ is it worth it for all the work you do?

    • @BUGPLAYS
      @BUGPLAYS 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      oh man it it definitely worth it from what i've heard. The hours vary but the pay is anywhere from $40,000-$100,000+ depending on the job and the amount of experience you have, among other things. I'm currently in school for welding and I am looking to CDA (Commercial Diving Academy) in Florida for underwater welding and diving. I say go for it man!

    Gleen, I'm a dry land welder, and we have Auto lens, I currently am working on a toy and would like your opinion. Do you think a underwater auto darken filter would be helpful to you in your job?

    For one thing (unless you are really good and given right circumstances) you never move your puddle. Where the bead lies is exactly the result you will get. So much goes into the aspects of wet welding such as water temperature, depth (the deeper/ more pressure the smaller the bead), turbidity (particles can enter your weld), water current(can actually push your puddle)....and so on.
    I'm sorry to say, but not all topside welders make good dive welders.

    i see you are using just a regular welding whip, what kind of rods are you using. and how do you keep yourself from getting shocked?

    • @descochin
      @descochin  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The leads are the same, yes. The stinger itself is a different design to better insulate and it secures the rod tighter. To keep from getting shocked always use direct current and wear rubber gloves without holes. With direct current the arc flows in one direction and uses the path of least resistance which will be the work surface to the stinger. There is a mild field that surrounds the stinger when "hot" but it is a mild annoying shock, hence the gloves.

    I'm 22 years old, in the USMC Reserve, and am currently enrolled in a Welding Technology program at my community college. I've been researching commercial diving for a while now and think that it would be an exciting career path once i finish my schooling. So far I know that I need to find a commercial diving school that is NATIONALLY ACCREDITED. By the looks of things I want to find work outside of the US, not only for travel and the lifestyle be you will, but the safety concerns with the diving industry in the US. There's still some research and decision making to do, but do you have any advice or critique to what I've stated above? Thanks, and love your video!

    • @descochin
      @descochin  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Semper Fi! Hmm.....for an American to break out as a diver working for an oversees company can be tricky. Not so much accreditation, but more on the lines of work visas, companies requiring IMCA certification along with HSE and so on. Then you have to contend with the labor laws; as far as them needing to hire in country first. Not that any of these hurdles can't be jumped, but you can see the obstacles. You can research US companies that do overseas work, but that plays into seniority a lot and favoritism for the good jobs. For example. The company I worked for made annual trips to Brazil for work. I am a Brazilian citizen(dual). Did they ever send me? I was good enough to supervise high profile jobs for them, but I wasn't in the "click" that got to go....they had headaches trying to get people work visas at times.
      As for national safety concerns, yes there are many. But it starts with the diver being able to recognize, research and be up to date with OE (operational experience) throughout the industry and push back with valid argument and not let the companies get away with complacency.
      I also work with a group for consulting. We research trends, so please understand the safety concerns of our industry are worldwide. For example Germany has been having problems adhering to basic standards; Spain has killed three diver in the last month......and so on.
      Let me know if any of this helps or if you have more questions.

      bailout is upside down so he can activate his bailout on his own.. Simply reaching around with his left hand.. why no bc? he is on ssa and obviously working on bottom trying to weld.. not scuba diving
