  • We did demo on a really messed up installation in LA. Found tons of violations, some of which were really dangerous.

    Its not a 3/8" flex. Its a 3 wire MC cable, perfectly up to code. Code has been my life for over 30yrs. I call the NEC code book the bible. Have every edition since 1980 to date.

    Woah, what about Romex to a light fixture. This would be grandfathered in now, but for 12/2 or 14/2 the HOT to the switch is the WHITE wire, and the switch leg back to the fixture (luminary) is the BLACK wire. Some local jurisdictions will still allow that. Some jurisdictions are still using pre-1980s NEC. They are generally small rural areas who do not want to train anyone, and don't have the money to do it anyway. One jurisdiction had their fire marshal doing electrical inspections, and she just had it dropped in her lap without notice. I helped as much as I could, showing her what most inspectors look for the most often, wire fill, wire ampacity, derating, proper overprotection, GFCI use, etc.

    I like how the NEC code book is lighted, and with book tabs great lay out, The electrical work look dangerous, crowded conductors in panels, improper grounds, lots and lots of code violations period.

    I think your comment on 200.7(A) was not specific enough. 200.7(C) says you can put live voltage on white-colored wires, if you mark them at the terminations with electrical tape. Your video isn't high enough definition to see, but I do see some marked wires. Were these marked?

    that quad outlet box was bonded per the device rated ground yoke and 8\32 screws that fasten the raised cover. aaaand that box is not equipment fastened in place. it is a outlet box with 2 duplex receptacles. lastly I'd bet that gutter was OK in size. add it all up. the code isnt at tough as most think.

    At 4:49 where you mention the 3/8" flex, I'm pretty sure that's MC cable. The plastic ribbon you can see coming out of it with the wires is a dead give away. They didn't pull those wires but rather it comes that way as a cable assembly.

    • @johninmilford7719

      Definitely an MC/AC cable assembly. Perfectly legal in that installation. The electrician could have made the connections using a wire nut and a green ground screw in the threaded hole provided in the box by the manufacturer, and used a decent MC/AC connector. He didn't.

    are you saying that a 12/3 mc cable can not be used to power a 240 volt device because it has a white wire ? I m pretty sure that if you do use the white as a hot you have to identify it with a black or hot color tape , then its acceptable

    Municipalities get to inspect themselves. City of Phoenix has some of the most atrocious wiring on the planet. One building had baloney all over the rooftop, penetrating the roof and running down into the walls. Another panel had been moved with 42 circuits in one undersized conduit. The drywall was turning brown and had SMOKE coming off of it. Remember derating?

  • @1957mrbill
    @1957mrbill 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    at 3:40 when you talk about not connecting the green ground to the box, isn't the ground connection on the outlets themselves part of the mounting bracket which creates the ground bond?

    • @Vbbv22
      @Vbbv22 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      1957mrbill no the box itself must be grounded, along with the receptacles. It's kind of funny because you can see the little "bubble" in the back of the box that's meant for a ground screw. Guy must've not had one on him. A lot of old school guys did stuff like what you see in the picture, and to be honest it's a perfectly good ground connection, it's just not legal. I suppose it would be sort of exposed to being bumped into but not very much. If he was out of ground screws he would've been better off just putting a machine screw into the back of the box meant for the ground screw and calling it a day. AND FFS TAPE UP YOUR OUTLETS IN METAL BOXES.

  • @crashandburnbirner
    @crashandburnbirner 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    wait, on your two gang outlet box the center screw that they used is bonded to the ground on the outlet isn't it? Either way they should have put the other 4 screws in rather than trying to save a minute

    if self grounded outlets are used is it safe to pigtail green wires with wirenut and go to outlet it will ground the box

    • @johninmilford7719
      @johninmilford7719 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The box will be grounded by the connection between the box and the cover. However, especially with an outlet, where the action of inserting and removing the cord to and from the outlets could loosen the connection, cause the wires to chafe and cause a live condition on the box itself You'd certainly be better of being in compliance with article 250. When in doubt- ground everything separately, you really can't go wrong.

    quick question can you add more than one hot to a 120v 15 amp breaker for an extra outlet with out problems at the breaker. I have no more room to add additional breakers in my box and need to add an outlet. i check the circuit and there is only 5 outlets connected to it. i don't want to splice in and add a junction box cuz the wire is all ready ran to the breaker box just not hooked up.

    • @aaronwpratt

    • @Sovek86
      @Sovek86 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      no, you cannot have more than one wire on a breaker at one time. You CAN however use tandem breakers which will give you two breakers for the space of one, and is only on a single leg.

    • @irey1978
      @irey1978 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They do have Double Tap breakers for exception use only, but it would be better to upgrade the main, or other safe option to wire in sub panel if half size >>tandem breaker

    • @andrewfunk9023
      @andrewfunk9023 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      you sure can if its rated for it. some breakers are rated for 2 equal size wires. and should also be both solid or stranded. don't listen to every code nazi.

    MC cable is routinely used in commercial applications, it's not illegal to use. The fact that you didn't know that and what it was you were talking about makes this whole video suspect.

    • @maskedamender
      @maskedamender 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I just saw this video and just saw your comment and agree with you fully!! Also the thing I personally noticed that was suspect is he also says you can't put power through a white wire, that is not accurate you can use a white wire for power HOWEVER it can't be white throughout phase/indicator tape on various spots of said wire is acceptable if it is not being used as the neutral! He also said the white wire can be used as a ground which is also not accurate UNLESS it's phase taped green! So the way I see it he's got a lot of great information because those relays in the beginning were absolutely too tight in that gutter and did not allow for legal safe heat dissipation but he definitely got at least a couple things wrong here!!
