- Hair cells are mechanosensory cells utilized in hearing and head proprioception (inner ear functions). Bending of their stereocilia "hairs" results in channel activity and neurotransmitter release - leading to sensory perception. The use of the same cell for completely different sensory functions is possible through the utilization of accessory structures that filter the input capable of bending the stereocilia.
