Just imagine Carlsen losing to this child in these not so brilliant games. I feel justified in my dislike of blitz. In blitz too much emphasis is on time rather than on chess skill. I feel that FIDE should discard blitz tournaments and instead direct their limited financial resources to rapid and classical time control events since those events provide enough time to apply chess skill over the board. Blitz is detrimental to global chess improvement. It is only good for home preparation, chess practice or for purposes of resolving tie-breaks. To me holding blitz tournaments is like having a football penalty kick tournament, that would not do the sport any good.

You can tell that Magnus is losing focus and making mistakes he's known for avoiding.
I think his difficulties with different players and the medias reaction is affecting his ability to focus.
Even the best have a weakness and for Magnus, its dealing with Fame and constant attention.
Perhaps also, the younger generation have learned his lines and style making it far easier to deal with than his other highly ranked opponents. Magnus has revolutionised the world of Chess and it's popularity across the globe, but perhaps the consequence is that is to allow the younger players to evolve quickly whilst Magnus stagnates under pressure.
Time away from the spotlight would be the best option for us to see Magnus back at his indestructible best.

Also it's hard to know if this represents someone with the potential to push the highest human chess potential forward, or is an example of someone who ( already statistically) is past his prime for this kind of endeavor no longer playing at his former best level.

Being brilliant at a game doesn't necessarily mean you will be brilliant at other things.
Aristotle observed a long time ago that kids can be brilliant at mathematics, but you don't see kids who are brilliant at politics or rhetoric. The reason is that kids play games and do math naturally whereas those other things require things that take time and maturity like empathy, experience, and personal growth.
As Magnus himself has said, he doesn't consider himself a genius, and it annoys him when people who are themselves geniuses treat him like some sort of guru just because he is good at a game.
Chess players can be brilliant at a game and total idiots at other things in life. Just look at Kramnik's recent behavior.
So my point is: just enjoy the chess prodigy without thinking that they should be doing something "better" instead. Games and entertainment give happiness to human beings. They inspire us to be better in our life pursuits. That is valuable enough.

@ I think if your a prodigy at something that requires a massive amount of forethought to be good at and positional memorization, then you are well suited to doing a vast array of other things at a high level.
Obviously I cannot make this child care about anything but chess, but it still makes me sad to see hugely wasted potential on a game.
I don't believe games have the power you've described, at all. They are enjoyable, but inspire you to be a better person? No. I know that better than many.
Magnus wants to be seen as humble, but he is very much a genius who decided to focus on a game as his life's purpose. I'm sad that people decide to do that even when they aren't prodigies.

I think Magnus is either teaching the kid, testing him, or just having some fun getting in unusual positions. To think that Magnus is confused or outplayed is not likely. That’s not to say the kid isn’t really good. I just think Magnus got more enjoyment out of testing him rather than destroying him every game.
