  • The Wii U is a home video game console developed by Nintendo as the successor to the Wii.Released in late 2012, it is the first eighth-generation video game console and competed with Microsoft's Xbox One and Sony's PlayStation 4.
The Wii U is the first Nintendo console to support HD graphics. The system's primary controller is the Wii U GamePad, which features an embedded touchscreen, directional buttons, analog sticks, and action buttons. The screen can be used either as a supplement to the main display or in supported games to play the game directly on the GamePad. The Wii U Pro Controller can be used in its place as a more traditional alternative. The Wii U is backward compatible with all Wii software and accessories. Games can support any combination of the GamePad, Wii Remote, Nunchuk, Balance Board, or Nintendo's Classic Controller or Wii U Pro Controller. Online functionality centers around the Nintendo Network platform and Miiverse, an integrated social networking service which allowed users to share content in game-specific communities.

The Wii U is probably one of my most precious consoles. I was born in 1980 and gamed for 25 years before taking a hiatus in 2005. Met the wife. Got married. Hard my son in 2009. Games were a distant memory. Around November 2013 I walked through a mall with my 4 year old and saw a Wii U kiosk with Mario 3D world playing on it. As a die hard Mario fan growing up it blew my wife’s and my mind. Four player Mario?! This was amazing. I picked it up. Then I picked up dkc tropical feeeze. Then mario kart 8. Almost 10 years on my son is a Nintendo boy through and through and I am more into games than I have been since I was a teenager. Truly an important console in our lives and has a special place in my heart.

Its weird for me to say this, but my most used thing on the WiiU was Crunchyroll, TH-cam, and the web browser. I had a CRT TV in my room at the time, with no headphone jack, so normally it was impossible to watch anything on it at night when I'd have to mute it.
However the WiiU controller had a headphone jack, and with Component cables it could hook up to that TV. So I ended up watching a lot of anime that way.

I had all the consoles for the console generation when the Wii U was launched and I can honestly say I played the Wii U more than any of the others during that time. It had great games that I really enjoyed playing and the Virtual Console was great as well. The game pad and its low battery life and under utilization did bring the system down a bit, but I still had a good time with the console.

The Wii U was an incredible console for me. A big part of it was actually the Miiverse social media service that it had. I met some of my very best friends through that service, one of whom became my wonderful wife just recently.
Outside of that, I got mine when Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate launched, and I put over a thousand hours into that game alone - easily my favorite game in the series. Xenoblade X is in my top ten games of all time, as is Breath of the Wild. On top of that, there were just a ton of super fun games: Splatoon, Zombi U, Star Fox Zero, Bayonetta 1&2, Mario 3D World, New Super Mario Bros. U, Smash 4, Mario Kart 8, and the immaculate Captain Toad… It was one hell of a console.

I got myself a second Wii U to hack, and I turned on my old one for a bit.
And man. Seeing the total lack of the miiverse makes me feel sad and lonely, you know? It was one of those things that was integrated into the console so well. You saw other people talking about what they were playing, you got little notes in Super Mario 3D world, the other squids and/or kids in Splatoon posted their cool drawings...
It truly was magical. The Miiverse is one of the things I miss about that era Nintendo. I replayed Detective Pikachu on the 3DS, and it felt charming in a way the Switch just didn't. Don't get me wrong, I love the Switch, but I feel like something's missing.
It was that era where Nintendo went all in on having a blast, and made daring decisions that set them apart. It didn't always make them boatloads of money (Wii U... ;_;) but it gave us games like Pikmin 3, the post apocalyptic team shooter Splatoon, Super Mario Maker, Bayonetta 2 (which on a Nintendo console was not something you'd expect!), GTA Lego, Xenoblade Chronicles, and Art Academy. Games that felt new and fresh, and well put together. I spent hours and hours on end playing Pokemon Art Academy on the 3DS.
It was also interesting to see Nintendo saying screw it to resolution, just happily having the games at 720p, but on the other hand, running 60fps whenever possible. It was like saying gameplay and art direction over pretty screenshots. As someone who mostly plays on the PC, this was a great choice. 30fps is not good enough. And Nintendo gave us actual fluid gameplay.
I will probably be unreasonably sad when the marketplace shuts down for good in March. It's the end of an era. An era where Nintendo had to try hard to keep people happy.

I know it had problems, and Nintendo made some mistakes with it, but I love the tablet, I love the features, I loved having all my streaming services and my TV controlled by the pad, and most importantly, I love the games. Nintendo knocked the library out of the park with this console. I wish we had got a Metroid title, but Breath of the Wild, Mario 3d Land, DK Tropical Freeze, Splatoon, Mario Kart 8, the list goes on, all amazing classics. I remember working at HMV before it came out and they sent me on a conference to play it as I was the only person that worked there that was excited about it. I remember I played ZombiU and was absolutely blown away by it. I'd not played a game before that had me so scared to die. Everytime I'd look down at the pad to sort out my backpack I was legit terrified. I was sold on the console for that game alone but when it came out being able to still play games even though someone else was watching TV was a game changer

A huge plus of the Wii U was it was the first Nintendo console with HDMI! AND it is backwards compatible with Wii giving the native ability to play those through HDMI too!

WiiU was such an under appreciated console - some absolute banger games on it. Marketing for it sucked as all the casuals who loved the Wii didn’t have a clue it existed

I bought the bigger battery from Nintendo's website. 5 to 7 hours is better than 2 for 4 hours. Xenob;ade X is by far my favorite Wii U title. It really showed the Wii U was capable as large seamless worlds without a huge level of load times.

Wii U was the console that turned me on to Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. Also turned me on to Platinum with Bayonetta 2 and Wonderful 101. Also turned me on to Pikmin 3. Also turned me on to Xenoblade X. And reignited my love for DKC with Tropical Freeze.

Having had the console for about five years now:
    1) I prefer the buttons on its gamepad to those on the Switch joy-cons.
    2) I prefer its home screen as well: every game seems special on it. And you can create folders as well!
    3) Virtual Console was perhaps not fully appreciated early on, but is one of the system's standout features.
    4) Wii back-compat is an underrated feature.
Anyway... I'm off to play on it.

Bought a WiiU at launch and enjoyed many excellent games. Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros WiiU, Zelda Wind Waker HD, Super Mario 3D World, and Pikmin 3 just to name a few.

I just played Xenoblade Chronicals X earlier this year and finished the game with over 100 hours. The game for me still looked stunning for its age but I also used the mClassic what made the game look nicer.

Beyond Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, Monster Hunter Tri Ultimate was the most fun I've ever had with my buddies!!! One could even transfer data between the Wii U and the 3DS so you can continue on the go, a very neat machine. 👍🏿👍🏿

I can say for sure that my group of friends got a LOT of mileage out of Nintendo Land, but very specifically Mario Chase. That game was an incredibly fun party game that we booted up all the time.

I really like how when my Wii was dying, it's disc drive at least, I was able to copy its functional soul into my Wii U where it exists to this day while the Wii rots in a landfill somewhere. Ultimately it was clearly an awkward transitional console between the Wii and the Switch is where Nintendo wanted to go but couldn't quite get it done just yet.

Bought my Wii U about a year before it was discontinued primarily to transfer my Wii VC to Wii U for it’s HDMI capability. Crazy thing is I was waiting for Wii U to go “on sale” but It never did, even after Wii U was discontinued it still commanded full retail prices. A few years ago I bought an officially factory refurbished 32GB Wii U from Nintendo’s online store and a new 32GB bundled Wii U I bought years ago. Not sure what I’ll do with either of them but they’re packed up for now. The eShop has a ton of fantastic games from many of Nintendo’s past systems and some wonderful digital only games. Many missed opportunities but I still enjoy my Wii U to this day.

I got my WiiU at the end of its life cycle, maybe 2 years before the Switch came out so library wise I had tons to play. I know this console had so many issues but I personally hold so much love in my heart for it. I loved that big clunky WiiU pad. I loved having the maps on the small screen for Pikmin 3, Wind Waker HD, and Twilight Princess. I never liked the Wii(the only Nintendo Console I didn’t like) so the WiiU was my coming home back to Nintendo since the Game Cube.

One thing the WiiU has over the Switch was it's nintendo magic in the UI and HuD. Seeing all the Mii's running around telling me which game they played on. Reminding me how much time I've spent in a game. The music was pleasant. The store had a mini game. Also The virtual console allowed me to play so many great retro games for very cheap and play them on the pad. Whilst the gf was watching TV. The game on it were good and I loved the blue game boxes . It was the last game system Nintendo put game manual in their boxes.

Such a quintessentially Nintendo product - just the name shafted it. The Wii U having a better library than the Switch is a hill happy to die on.

Honestly the Wii U slipped right past me on launch. I know a lot of people didn't even know what it was, myself included (I thought it was a Wii add-on when I first saw it). However a few games had me sold on it (namely W101) and I did have a lot of multiplayer fun with lots of people, probably the last time I really did this too. Great library and great VC, and Tokyo Mirage Sessions, I don't think I've ever powered through such a long game before. I did not want to put it down

I still have my Wii U Wind Waker HD version. I bought it back in 2014. I put many hours into Smash 4, WWHD, and Mario Kart 8. It was cool to be able to play Wii games on it too like Punch Out and Twilight Princess.

I never picked up the Wii U myself, but I have some great memories playing Mario Party with friends on the thing. I also played a bit of Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze over at another friends house. The Wii U had some great games (still waiting for a switch version of Windwaker HD xD), but I never got hyped enough to want to buy one myself =)

With younger kids (around 6 years old), the Wii U is awesome and we still have it hooked up! Great multiplayer games (and some fun single player games too), and the Wii U game pad feels great (*far better than the Switch, in hand).
The joy cons have been a step backwards in terms of Nintendo control pads, and while I really like the Switch, the Wii U is more comfortable, and the games just control better too. The Switch pro controller is okay but not as good as the Wii U pro controller, in my opinion. That makes a difference in terms of enjoyment and in “feel”, no doubt about it.

Nowadays I mainly use my WiiU to emulate the Neo Geo and PCEngine lol. I find the giant tablet gamepad thing quite comfortable although it was a gimmick which never really took off in the way the Wii controllers did. I loved games like New SMB and Bayonetta 2 and it introduced me to the joy of Monster Hunter online play. I'm pleased that so many of its games got a second chance on the Switch.

The console was designed to be unobtrusive to the home entertainment center. The Wii U remains my main home console because it’s so versatile.
