  • Comparison of ATR 72 vs. Dash 8 Q400.
We will look at the ATR 72 and Dash 8 turboprop-powered aircraft in this video. Both have a similar appearance, however, they differ in terms of their operations.

I'd say that the DHC-8-400 is more of a competitor for the CRJ's on regional routes despite being a bit slower

In the past, there was for me only one turboprop along with DASH8 and that one was the Fokker 50. For me, both airplanes Fokker 50 and DASH 8 or Q400 are the same but with slight differences. Honestly, ATR is a cheap airplane but has no chances against Fokker 50 or Dehavilland DASH8. Believe me, if Fokker 50 is back in business, ATR will be blown away from scenario.

I agree with you, the F50 was a great turboprop, but its seat capacity (50 passengers if I remember well) was much less than the newer aircraft that replaced it.

As a 25-year-old person who has spent 16 years of his life as an aviation fan, I describe the ATR-72 as the worst airplane still flying. The dhc-8 q400 is countless times more successful than this faulty aircraft. I don't understand why people like the atr-42/72 series. Fokker 50, which has been out of production for 30 years, is many times better than this plane. On the other hand, Soviet aviation spent more effort on turboprop aircraft. The fruits of this labor reached their peak with province-18. Although they could not hold on to the market after the collapse of the Soviets, they were able to produce beautiful machines such as Ilyushin IL-114 and Antonov An-140. In addition to the DHC-8 Q400 and Fokker 50 that I have mentioned before, the designs of western aircraft designers such as Saab 2000 and Bae Atp are all more reliable and robust machines. I fly as a passenger on all the models I mentioned above, but I do not fly on ATR-42/72 series aircraft. I don't believe these planes are safe either. It's even hard to believe that engineers designed these machines. If I didn't know better, I would say that this plane was designed by turners and welders. In my opinion, these models full of design errors should have been a bigger crisis than the Boeing 737MAX, but when the number of deaths was low in accordance with the passenger capacity of the plane, no one even cared. The last one, I don't know how many accidents have occurred due to similar reasons, yet why do they still allow them to fly? This plane is dangerous even for people on the ground. The life of anyone who buys a plane ticket cannot be entrusted to primitive, inflatable rubber icebreakers, which are proven to have insufficient surface area on the wing and horizontal stabilizer surfaces of this flying bolt box, and which, even with the improvements made, cannot reach the sufficient surface area stated by the FAA in its report.
Sorry ATR fans, but theese are unpleasant facts.

'In addition to the DHC-8 Q400 and Fokker 50 that I have mentioned before, the designs of western aircraft designers such as Saab 2000 and Bae Atp are all more reliable and robust machines.'
If they're so much better, why aren't they being manufactured any more?
The total number of SAAB 340, 2000, BAe ATP, F50 and 60, and all Dash 8 model together add up to 2126 units.
Total ATR 42 and 72 production stands at 1700 units. And they're still being built.
Budda Air recently decommisioned their oldest ATR 42-300.
Twenty nine years old and 70.000 cycles. I'll let you do the math.
'cannot be entrusted to primitive, inflatable rubber icebreakers,'
Every plane I have just mentioned uses them.

I'm living in Papua New Guinea, which has, despite its rugged terrain, a very good aviation safety record, and my son is a captain with Air Nuigini, the national carrier, flying the Dash 8 at the moment. Air Nuigini's domestic rival, PNG Air, flies some ATR planes. Some time ago, way before this ATR crash that has just now happened in Brazil, I had asked him for his opinion about the ATR planes and I remember him answering that it is said to have an icing problem.

ATR cant carry 90 passengers, even 80 passengers can accommodate is in high density configuration with less legrooms . But it is best and affordable aircraft for small regional routes . Dash Q400 have better performance then ATR with more seats but also expensive than ATR but have more range. Engine is quite powerful of Q400. Dash 8 speed goes above 600km/hrs.

The only reason the ATR sells well is that it is cheaper that the dash 8 family. In all other respects it is inferior. The first crash of an ATR owing to icing was American Eagle flight 4184 in 1994. ATR said at the time they would fix the icing problem. We're still waiting....

What I see especially in Italy and Spain, now also France, is that the 1000 to 1500 km ranges are being taken over by high speed or night trains. A much better option in the long run. City to city, so no long congested transfers, much less noise, pollution, more comfort and room, and if high subsidies on fuel prices for aircraft are no longer maintained, at competitive prices. The only thing that keeps many airlines in the air is the subsidy at the cost of taxpayers on the ground.

Today (August, 7th, 2024) there is the Dash 7 available on external markets, although I did not take the time to watch any review yet. But I personally love to 'fly' the ATR 42-600 and 72-600 within MSFS! They are my definitely favourite turboprops of all times since forever (even when I was 'flying' in X-Plane 10, some 10 years ago back in 2014 - and previously X-Plane 9, and 8 and so on, back to when I 'started' in early 2000s with X-Plane v7. But in those earlier versions there wasn't an ATR available for what I can remember; not as a payware Add-on anyway. In X-Plane 10 though a developer releasead a very nice version of the aircraft, but I cannot recall their name).
      Cheers.
      Happy landings. 💪🏼

ATR has a couple neat features but the Dash 8 is a much better aircraft IMHO. Dash 8 handling is excellent, and it copes very well in moderate icing conditions. The Q400 is a beast, can maintain up to 19,000 feet on one engine versus 11,000 for the ATR. Can go straight to 25,000 at max weight. A very good friend is now an ATR Captain, and previously flew the Dash. He calls it scary and underpowered, and says you don't want to be near icing in it. But the ATR is well marketed with good product support, so captured a lot of the market. Bombardier (previous Dash owner) left a lot to be desired in product support. Viking (DHC Canada) is looking to change that positively nowadays.
