  • Another behind-the-scenes video. This is a very brief introduction to the concept of continuo realisation. I talk about what that term means and how I executed it in Purcell's Sound the trumpet.

Really helpful comments on the continuo part while I'm studying the highest voice part. Thank you!

There's a reason why we actually have realized Continuo Parts because they do what you expect when playing Basso Continuo on any Keyboard instrument. The Barenreiter Verlag Organ parts of Bach's St Matthews Passion for example have the Bass line written in the Left Hand and above that are the Chords in the Right Hand Staff that are based on the Figures below the left hand staff (that also applies to some Lute parts like BWV 198 when Barenreiter has Realized Lute parts). These parts often include leading notes, which in Continuo playing are super important because it makes going to the next Chord a lot easier.

Triple thumbs up! Thank you for the special version highlighting the keyboard continuo instruments - I have been known to listen single stereo tracks of a recording to see in which track the harpsichord was most audible, so that I could focus on what the harpsichord player was doing. Your video really made me smile!

It's always amazing what I can find online just before I have to leave to play for a Sunday service at the little Episcopal Church in West Memphis, Arkansas, USA. I will have to go back and give a second listen or per chance, a few more.

Andrew, I really like the way you explain, and explicate what is happening in the various parts of this most famous aria by Purcell - and the performance itself is rather wonderful!

LOVE your ideas! You should start self-publishing your realizations! Or maybe you can take requests and people can pay you for making realizations for specific pieces.

A and A# together - you were making "a joyful noise," nobody said it had to be musical! Perhaps one of "the instruments of joy" slipped out of tune? My harpsichord slips if I look at it the wrong way!

much appreciated - the ;ground' was the basis for all music until music went astray and lost it's foundations, is that it.
