- Woodturning - In this video I combine sweet gum pods and a color that most resin casters are afraid to use, yellow! Combined with Hyper Shift and some beautiful black walnut, this combination is awesome!

I like the yellow with the black walnut. Another beautiful piece.
Thank you so much!
The yellow certainly looks good in the sweetgum pods! Good choice!
I think so too! Thanks
Well Jim this is a definite Grinchy green creation . I know you said the designer epoxy was yellow, but it shows green on camera.
Someone is extremely lucky to have gotten this turning! 😎
That’s because of the gum pods. The light on the inside at the end show that it’s yellow. Thanks
I love turning sweet gum pods!
Me too, lol. Thanks
Wow! Gives me a 70’s flower power vibe!
Thank you very much!
Almost like a Lava Lamp!
You nailed it! Exactly what I was thinking. ✌🇨🇦🥰
Jim. (Standing ovation with slow golf clap).
Thank you so much!
The hyper shift really shows up around the gum pods. Makes them look magical.
Thanks
It’s lovely, Jim. Please continue to add green and yellow to your work. I cried when you ground off the neon yellow. -Mary Lou
Sure will. Thanks
Yes, the neon yellow would have been amazing I think. ✌🇨🇦💛
I do look forward to more beauchene . Thank you for your Military Service. You do such a great job on what ever you attempt. They look like flowers. Really nice.
Thank you very much!
I thought the thumbnail to this was an unattractive colour and an uninspired use of pods but I figured, if Jim is taking the time to try things new things and push himself out of his comfort zone, I should at least watch the journey.
AS ALWAYS the still image does not do this piece justice. The colour is so mesmerizing when it is in motion and the shots at the end just really made me want to touch it! Such a perfect design for this whole piece - as ever, thankyou so much for sharing. Brings me joy every day to be able to watch you make art. All the best xx
Thanks so much!
Oooh I like the idea of a stained "glass" bowl. Made with the leftover odds and ends from other works.
Thank you so much!
Whoever purchased that pot, they got one of the cutest I've seen you make! Those sweet gum pods really make the piece unique, and the contrast between the yellow and walnut is spectacular!
Thanks so much 😊
Contrast in colors are much appreciated by me, thanks to Designer Epoxy for supporting Jim’s channel. Always great to watch your creativity ~Smile oN
Thank you so much!
It's beautiful. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one that you’ve made that has not been beautiful. I was thinking, yes leave some resin on the top. But I love the finished product. It is perfect without that extra resin.
I am glad Covid helped a lot of great things happen. If it wouldn’t have happened we wouldn’t be able to watch your amazing work.
Wow, thank you! Much appreciated!
I didn't think I would, but I actually really like the yellow.
Me too, lol. Thanks
Sweet turning this week... ha ha ha
Would have loved to see the ring on top stay...
Thanks 👍 ha ha!
I'm not a woodturner but as an artist too, i love when ppl say repeatedly about their latest piece that it's one of the best things they've ever made. Here's to continuing growth! The sweet gum pods are so cool, and at least in the video, the edges really show off the hypershift. Amazing work.
Thank you so much!
As usual, another beautiful piece, Jim. I love the sweetgum pods and the character they add to the piece.
Designer epoxy
Another lovely piece Jim. Love the shots where the lighting makes it look more like green. Absolutely stunning
Beautiful 😍
When you first put it on the lathe, it looked like a massive boba tea, lol
I’ll take your word for it. Lol. Thanks
That yellow worked out great! It really makes the sweet gum pods stand out.
Thank you! Cheers!
Beautiful little pot/bowl! I think the lighter colors really make the sweet gum pods POP! Plus, the yellow is a nice compliment to the walnut. I agree with a previous comment that says the pods look like snowflakes. VERY pretty!!
Thanks so much! 😊
That hyper shift pigment is on point in this piece! Love the way the yellow looks green and sets of those pods and that black walnut.
Thanks so much!
The use of different natural items incorporated in your pieces really enhance your turnings
Thank you very much!
Hi Jim
Yes the Black walnut & sweet gum pod looks great. I agree with your choice to remove the yellow (regardless of the red-taped disk). The hypershift looked more lime green when you were working on pot but at the end of your video the hypershift was more lime green only around the pods & when it was lit up the yellow was more dominant & the yellow lit would have looked but then would it be lit up all the time so then your original decision was correct. Very nice piece. I do really enjoy your depth of information about the different tools etc, & how you go the extra mile to chat with the tool-makers. I've learnt a lot. Thanks Jim
Happy to hear! Thanks so much!
Your talent and creativeness never cease to amaze! ❤️
Thank you very much!
Very retro piece. Reminds me of snowflakes. This piece would look great in silvery white for snow and maybe even icicles. Thank you.
White is another tough color to pull off in a casting. Thanks
I absolutely love this bowl. It is my favorite and I would love to have that in my house! This is the bowl I will spend the rest of my life thinking about and wishing I could have gotten it. This is a one of a kind gem and the person who has it is very lucky! You have done another fantastic job Jim! Thanks for sharing this video.
Thank you very much!
I feel like this over so many of Jim's pieces! If I ever win the lottery, I'm commissioning him for several pieces!! Wish me luck!! Lol
@@dinkvjrMe too! I expect to win the UK's National Lottery on Saturday. He never tells us the prices (in case they're being bought as a gift)...,do you think £10.8M will cover a couple of Jim's bowls (plus postage to England)? LOL!
@@dinkvjr Good Luck on that lottery! I am waiting for the PCH van to roll into my drive and give me my winnings! 🤣🤣 I am going to be getting several of his bowls for sure!!
The yellow color with the flower shapes from the sweet gum pods gives this a “flower power” vibe. I just love it!
Designer Epoxy
Thank you! Cheers!
Really cool color contrasts; alien spores floating in radioactive ooze.
I see it! Thanks
Glad you found your way to TH-cam. You have been a big influence and educator in my turning for the last 3 years.
That is awesome! Happy to hear this!!
Awesome video as always! Love the community here! You guys are kick ass! ❤
Thank you very much!
I did not think yellow would look anywhere near that good! I did notice the hypershift showed up a small amount in the end. I really like the sweet gum pods. Thanks for all of the great ideas! Designer Epoxy
Thanks so much!
This piece is very psychedelic!!! Great job as always, Jim!!
Many thanks!!
That turned out beautiful the yellow made those pods pop from my perspective. It was like a lime green, but no matter what it turned out to be a beautiful project.
Designer epoxy.
As always, you do a great project, I have been going back and watching all your videos especially on how to make a homemade comb. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate all the hard work you put in to doing these videos they’re quite educational and for somebody who’s been turning as long as you have, I have learned a few tricks. Thanks again and have a great day.
Thank you so much!
This would be a great piece for a lamp. Light it up on the inside! 😁
Oh yes! Thanks
Its crazy the things you can do with the stuff people walk across daily. This is real art! I love it!
Thank you very much!
My dad and his brothers used to paint gum balls silver and use them as Christmas decorations.
I can see that. Thanks
I was disgusted until I realized you mean the sweet gum pods and not like, chewing gum balls.
@@horsetuna we always called these gum balls. On the other hand, they were poor enough to use these (and paint from my grandfather's job) for tree decorations, they probably would have done something with chewing gum.
@@horsetunalol I thought the same thing 🤪🤣. Too funny.
I bet those were very beautiful!!!
Hi Jim Black walnut is lovely and the sweet gum pods really go well with the bright yellow. The vase is magnificent and unique I really love it. Amanda xx
Thanks so much!
Takes me back to the 60s. Very psychedelic. Peace man.
Thank you very much!
Glad you decided to use the yellow with the Designer Epoxy. Makes a great contrast with the walnut. Although the Hyper Shift isn't prevalent, it is still visible. Another great piece.
Thank you very much!
I wonder if you encased the pods in different colors of resin what the result be. Sort of like when you did the resin balls...
Yes, that can be done too. Thanks
Designer Epoxy. I love the look of the pods. The shape of the hollow form is a real eye catcher.
Thanks so much!
What wood turning tools would you recommend for a beginner wood turner and what epoxy resin would you recommend for a beginner
Crown tools and Hunter tools. Get a 5/8 bowl gouge and number three Hercules from Hunter. Designer epoxy is user friendly and a great product. Don’t forget to use my codes for your discount. Link in the description. Thanks
What a great looking piece & outcome. Outstanding! ⭐⭐⭐👍🏼
Thank you very much!
You made the right call taking off the yellow rim
Thank you so much!
Those gum pods look so cool?
Yes indeed, thanks!
I love the look of the Sweet Gum Pods that are turn down more. They look like flowers. Beautiful piece of art, Jim 😊
Thanks a bunch
lit from the inside, it looks like sea urchins in lemon curd... lit from the outside, and you get pop-art snowflakes!
Lol, thanks!
VERY PRETTY vase!! I love the contrast of the pods and walnut with the yellow resin! Those pods look amazing, its cool how star- or snowflake-like shapes they are.
Thanks, Jim!❤
Thanks so much 😊
Love it but funny how it looks green without light but yellow with light
The brown pods throw the color off. Thanks
Really liked the effect of the resin sandwiched between two layers of rich dark wood. Great piece!
Thank you very much!
I think this is one of the only uses for those darn pods. They sure hurt the feet.😅
And the dang things sprout like crazy.
I bet they do, lol. Thanks
Beautiful piece, I liked the yellow rim. I think it would show off the piece when its lit up. You did a great job, love the pods too!🎉🎉🎉
Thank you so much!
Thank you so much!
I think the shape of the vessel is great. But, I’m not s fan of the resin color
This is why it's such a hard color to work with, thanks!
I absolutely love the color contrast! That yellow with the hypershift is gorgeous ❤
Thank you so much!!
Designer Epoxy is a beautiful product the way you use it. Your finished pieces are unique and very beautiful. I enjoy every episode I have seen. My son is the wood turner, I am a painter and enjoy your videos as much as he does.
Thank you very much!
Definitely made the right call in turning the resin rim away. Another groovy creation. Thanks!
Awesome! Thank you!
You and your wife have such good instincts for color and style. You were right to take off the top. It’s gorgeous!
Thank you so much
He hypershift gives the yellow resin a slight green tinge. The sweet gum pods look awesome 👏
Thank you so much!
I love this piece! It’s very 70’s!
Totally, thanks!
Looks like the sweet gum pods makes the yellow pop. Great job
It does! Thank you so much!
Yet another beautiful creation. That yellow was definitely loud and proud!
Yes it was! Thanks
I really like the idea of a 100% resin bowl! Maybe a peacock theme to throw back to the good old days, haha.
Yes. Always looking for ideas! Thanks for being a dedicated viewer!
Taking off the resin on the top was a good move. When you were mixing the resin at one point it looked like Mt Dew ! Nicely done.
Thank you very much!
I’ve used those sweet gum pods in a project during Covid and gave it to my family doctor as a virus bowl but i’m really impressed with the designer epoxy and the use of the hyper shift
Thank you very much!
WOWSERS!!! Just phenomenal! I totally dig that nuclear yellow! It gives so much contrast with the sweetgum pods and the black walnut wood. And the hyper shift giving it that radioactive green tint, I'm in love with this piece. It looks like the hyper shift settled a lot around the gum pods, so they have this really crystalized, prismatic look to the outline on them that just makes all the little hollows and occlusions spark. I can't say it enough, I adore the hyper shift and dynamic color pallets ❤
Another dramatic, astounding piece, Jim! This is why I keep coming back, week after week. I can't wait to see what next week brings 😊
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!
So pretty, I never thought yellow could look so good.
Thank you so much!
Love the yellow colour and the flower look of the pods :)
Thanks so much 😊
The sweet. Gum pods add such a beautiful design to any peice of art. This is no exception and deep into contrast with dark pods, walnut and yellow resin really make this project a unique work of art. Jim, once you hit it way, way out of the park.
Thank you so much 😀
Designer Epoxy!!
Thanks
OMG!!! Finally someone using steel wool!!!
Thank You Jim!😅
Understand that I'm trying to catch up on your videos. Obviously, I'm behind. 😪
Have fun! Hope you enjoy! Thanks so much!
I started watching resin videos, and your station is the first ones I watched. Your standards for the videos are amazing. When I watch others, I never finish because they don't teach at the same time. I am not an artist in and form, but if I could do this, I would. All your projects are beautiful. Thank you for taking the time to make a great videos!
Thank you very much! Welcome aboard!
The contrast between the walnut and yellow is splendid. The walnut is a lovely colour.
Amazing how the retrofit works - like a knife through butter.
Thanks
At first I was disappointed that you took off the top resin portion but seeing the finished piece that was the right choice. great job again! cheers
Thank you very much!
Hi Jim, It's always a pleasure to watch you do your magic, another awesome piece. I'm glad to see you're using colors that might be intimidating. That's the creativity in you. Great job! What do you think about putting them sweet gum seeds in something similar to the round mold you used in your 80 thousand subscriber video, applying different colors with the hyper shift. Finishing the piece with designer epoxy (water sanding between coats). Wouldn't that be cool? Keep on turning!!
What’s wet sanding, lol. Thank you so much!
@SpragueWoodturning hi jim, it's called wet or dry diamond grit sand paper (water sanding). You use water for lubricant with the diamond grit sand paper. The car body shops use this technique to remove the orange peel and / or debris after they spray the clear coat on the vehicle (if there are any imperfections, then they buff). You can maybe try this when you use the art cast on the entire project as your finish. The project will have no orange peel or debris. Perrrrfection.....
I love the gum balls in this piece. I was a little worried about the yellow but the piece is absolutely beautiful!
Thank you so much!
I do like it a lot! Very cool!!! The pods look like a cross between flowers and cool retro 50’s stars!
Thank you! Cheers!
I love the pattern the sweet guns give the piece. You definitely picked the right colour resin to really make them pop!
Thank you very much!
Designer Epoxy ❤
Beautiful yellow vase the sweet gum pods really set it off, great job Jim ❤️
Thanks so much 😊
Glad you tried the yellow. This piece is amazing.
Thank you! Cheers!
Lovely piece....great color! Sweet gum pods make the piece pop.
Yes it does! Thanks
That is a surprisingly good color combo! I never would have thought to put that shade of green/yellow with the dark wood, but dang it looks so good! I agree though, that cutting off the yellow band at the top was the right decision.
Thank you very much!
It'd be perfect in my yellow living room - wish I could afford to purchase that bowl. I love it!
Thank you very much!
Jim, your creations are remarkable. So gorgeous and your talent makes me jealous.
Designer Epoxy
Thank you very much!
Really cool design. The colour (to me) reminds me of a radioactive kind of vibe, with the sweet gum pods looking like mini explosions. Definitely yet another tick in the 'win' column!
As always, have a great weekend Jim.
Thanks so much!
This vase is absolutely stunning. I love the bright colors. 💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚
Thanks so much 😊
I love that you went so loud with the yellow. Go big or go home, right? 😆
Has anyone told you that they appreciate your turning down the volume on stuff that's gonna be excessively loud, lately? Because I really really appreciate it.
I'm not any kind of wood or resin creator, I just enjoy watching skilled people craft things, but I really appreciate how you give tips for beginners and stuff like that, and how you thoroughly review the tools you're using. The difference between the old and new cutters is hilarious!
Thanks so much for your comments!
Beautiful piece Jim. Gum pods look like flowers or stars. Hope your back feels better soon. 😊❤
Yes, thank you!
Such an amazing piece. Love the pods with the yellow epoxy and walnut. Yet another wonderful piece truly amazing.
Thank you so much!
Really nice result! I love the yellow with the sweet gum pods. Nice choice!
Thank you so much!
Great job. The yellow works good with the walnut.
Thank you! Cheers!
Love the shape. Always appreciate when you show and talk about your tools.
Awesome, thank you!
Lovely as always. I really liked that black walnut…beautiful grain.
Thank you so much!
I like the walnut and the shape of the bowl and how you incorporate everything. To be honest I'm not a yellow person l know someone who would love this bowl. It is a nice piece.
Thanks
This color looks nice with the walnut.
Totally!
Beautiful piece again this week! I'm not a yellow fan, but I have to admit that with walnut it looks great! Have a beautiful week!
Thank you! You too!
Just beautiful. Very oriental looking to me. The pods would be cloud formations. Love your running conversation.
Glad you like them! Thanks
I like this piece Jim, very retro 70's vibe. Very cool
Thank you very much!
What a pretty pot! Love how you find new ways to use those fabulous pods. They're all over the street in my neighborhood. Anyway, really elegant shape and combination of materials, colors and shapes!
Thank you very much!
Wow, very cool. Love the yellow with the walnut! Great choice and as always beautiful job!
Thank you very much!
The walnut and lemon yellow look great together. I’d be proud to have that on my shelf. 💕
Thanks very much!
