This is the video I needed to hear. I have the same work ethic and drive as you do. I put myself through college with no money in my pocket. I worked two jobs while going to college. I taught myself to sew, so I made my own skirts to wear on the weekends. I have sold a lot of paintings, mosaics, painted furniture, and pendants made out of dishes. I would stay up until three or four in the morning painting or some other artwork. I didn't know how to get started to sell my artwork. I sold a lot in craft shows, but the setup for them is a lot of work. Fortunately, I started a following, and people were starting to know me as an artist. Thanks so much for this useful information. I would love to hear your life story. Thank you.
So glad you shared "If you want it bad enough you will find a way to make it happen". Sometimes I feel alone in that sentiment, lol! 😅 I've always said that's why I'm never envious of other people....if they have something I don't, its because I don't want/value it enough. I know if I am sufficiently determined, I would find a way
about two years ago I started watching stained glass how to videos was all gung ho..... saved some money and went to a supplier here in NJ thinking I was going for a bare bones starter kit wound up spending about a grand and came home with two pieces of glass.... well never started and everything is layed out to start in my basement... for two years ......this is the year that I make something! thanks for all your vids.
Agreed with Makenzie. dont think, just make. My first pieces were pieces of candy corn about 3.5 inches tall. simple pieces with curves to learn the basics of cutting, foiling and soldering and they came out horrible but it was a start LUL
Thank you for sharing your story. Similar has been weighing heavily on me for a while, but this week especially I've been seriously considering following a similar road as you. You have given me a lot to think about with the reality v the rose glasses. I am so glad you put your videos and tutorials on yt. You are the person I found on here when I couldn't remember the small details of what my grandmother taught me as a child. I have learned so much from you and love when I see you've put a new video out. I would personally love to hear more about your life and childhood, but only if you want to talk about it. I hope you have a wonderful day!
Absolutely my friend. We have to stay realistic about our goals and where we are. So glad your enjoying my videos and finding them helpful!! I can definitely talk about it some more, and I hope you have a wonderful day too!!
At this point I want to say: Thanks for sharing your knowledge about stained glass, cutting and soldering with us, Makenzie. I love to see your videos about that and sometime I will try it by myself. Glass is such a nice material.
You are the most honest and humble person I have seen on the web. I have learned from you more than from any others on this topic. I have been doing stained glass since my retirement (in 2017). It has changed my life. It has given me a new sense of accomplishment. You have inspired me to tackle on big projects. I thoroughly enjoy your videos. I hope you keep doing them. I do not aspire to do it as a business but I am creating pieces that I can give to loved ones and many that I keep for myself!
Thank you so much Elise! Makes my day to think that my videos can be helpful and inspiring. Stained glass is such a fantastic art, im so glad you've found it in your retirement!! 🖤🌈 thank you for watching 🖤 🌈
Thank you Makenzie for such a passion of a video. You are right as far as marketing for the stained glass hobby/ career. One thing for certain is there are not a lot of people like you with the skills and experience that you have in this craft. To me that is a plus for you in regards to the market and everything else that comes with it. I go every week to Beveled Edge in Windham Maine which is owned by Marlene Seavey. She is the only one in the area after there used to be 3 stained glass shops. And they closed. I know one of them called Glass Worx in Sanford closed because Cheryl the owner decided to retire since her husband retired from his job. The other 2 that closed was of course Covid, it hurt many of small businesses. But one thing I noticed and I can share with you is that Marlene has picked up several more students since the others closed. The positive thing is she now is doing this 5 days a week! Classes and new students. Now the negative, it is consuming many hours of her time, but she’s been doing this for nearly 22 years. And she is very good. Yes supplies and shipping and costs are a big issue to run a business. But you have to do what you have to do, if the prices go up on material etc, then you have to raise your prices as well, people will still pay, they get it, after all it is 2022, nothing is cheap anymore. But you are doing a great job, and please don’t get discouraged, we need great artists like you. You will get through any bumps in the road. Thank you so much again for a great informative video.
Thank you so much 🙏🖤 and absolutely, the stores that did survive are now getting more class sign ups then ever, and a younger and younger demographic which is absolutely awesome. And you are right about that. I struggle so much with increasing prices because I too know the struggle. I'm torn for so many reasons right now. But I do know one thing and that is glass is my life. So however my glass career transforms over these next few years, is what it is. Thank you for the kind words and I'm going to keep my eyes peeled for that shop/Marlene. Maybe I can get out there and film a video! 🖤
Thank you so much for your content! I recently got into stained glass after talking about it for years, my fiance did the research and bought me the basics for Christmas this year. I actually used your video clip to prove to him that I couldn't really use his electronics iron and that I really did need to buy the Hakko! 🙂Your tutorials have been great, and now I'm going back and watching your other videos in the background while I cut glass, etc. Thank you for all the time you've saved me as a newbie and for being an inspiration. Loved your review of the Michael's kits, so glad I didn't try one of those first and I just jumped into the deep end of the pool to do things the right way. I am planning on selling a few pieces at a local gallery that does consignment for artists, but right now I'm just having a blast creating pieces for friends and family to build my skill level. Congratulations on the success of your business after all the long hard hours!
Do you guys prefer this audio over my other videos audio? This is the lav mic and I feel like it is less echo-y then my other cam-mounted mic. Idk. What do you think? P.S I love and appreciate you guys so much.
Yes, I think it sounds better. I just listened to your packaging video and the sound quality was not as good. It sounded ‘thin’ (I don’t know how else to describe it). The new sound is a deeper sound and more rounded, less tinny. Thanks for being so open with us.😘
Thank you for sharing!!! I got back into glass the end of 2019...great timing since the last 2 years gave me more time to work on my business..it did take off ;) I would LOVE to be able to quit my full time job., however I don't see that happening...it's a GREAT side gig for me and I LOVE it!! My mind is bursting with new ideas. I love watching your channel! Congratulations on your success and Thanks again!!
Isn't it so fun!!! The inspiration and drive that comes with stained glass is infectious. And thank you for watching, im so glad your enjoying my channel!! 🖤🖤🌈🌈
I have never related to something so much !! I have been doing stained glass for 15 months, I do it full time now but keep agency work close ~ just in case! I see 3am most nights because I'm sat soldering and grinding away haha! I don't think it's luck, definitely 100% hard work! Thank you for your videos - they helped, and still help so much especially when I was starting out. Everything you said in this video was so real and relatable , thank you :-)
Your work ethic is a major driving force and you have original pieces with your own aesthetic. That has set you apart and you keep evolving. Even for an old gal like me who is just starting as a hobbyist has taken away an enormous amount of knowledge from watching your channel. Maybe the stars just aligned to help your success but I think it’s more your skill and work ethic. I look forward to all your videos and your honesty is refreshing. I see many many years of success in your future.
Thanks for sharing...you are such a pleasure to watch. I'm in my mid 60's and only do this for pleasure. But I am glad you found a career you love and are passionate about. You have worked hard to be where you are. Everything in life happens for a reason. I am happy you have a loving husband and people who support you....that is success!! Keep being the wonderful person you are....people will keep coming back!!!
Thank you for sharing your experience. You are very brave to fully commit to your stained glass, and I hope you continue to succeed. I like the leaf forms on your table! They seem like a new subject matter in glass for you. I can understand why you did not get a chance to cut them out while talking. You were very focused on telling us your story, and that too is greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much Candee! Leafs were not a new design, but I do have some new stuff coming up this restock. So glad you enjoyed the video, thank you for watching!
You’re the best. Thank you for being honest. Thank you for being an inspiration. Thank you for sharing your videos. Because of your videos, I was able to learn stained glass, so I’m forever grateful. 🙏 Would love a video where you share more about you.
Thank you for sharing your story. I ran across one of your videos one day... caught my interest.. I watched more did some research and thought I would give it a try. I am retired and my family thought I was crazy. So I got some supplies... cut some glass and BOOM i was hooked. It came so natural I wish I had started when I was younger.. after a year I am doing pretty good . Thank you so much for your videos. You are a great artist but an even better teacher and a great inspiration to other artist.
Thank you so much Nancy!! Im so glad your enjoying my channel and so glad you gave yourself a chance at such an awesome art. Welcome to stained glass and thank you for watching!!
One of the things that made this story visually interesting was having that piece of reflective glass in front of you while you talked. While listening, I would sometime turn my gaze to the leaf pattern and then to the glass sheet that you didn't get around to cutting up. Seeing your reflection in the mirror coating was interesting as you were reflecting on your career path so far.
You are awesome!! Thank you so much for this video I can so relate to it!!! After loosing my job I found this passion for stained glass , not sure where it will take me . I’m doing small sales but glass is expensive!! Time will tell. Your guidance is very much valued. 🙏
@@MakenzieHallie Thank you!!! , yea I truly believe that too. You are definitely my inspiration with your art and your drive. I appreciate your words 😊💕
@@MakenzieHallie Work just seems to get in the way sometimes! Dream of making the move you did into stained glass for a living! When I decided to learn, you were the one I found on line and watched all your video, took notes, loved your upbeat personality, just don't get much time to practice. Do you have a private message or email that I can send some photos of what I have done so far? Maybe get some constructive criticism, I struggle through every phase, but won't give up! I am here to listen if you want to tell your story of what made you the wonderful person that you are! Would also like to ask some more questions on the cutters mate mini that you tried out.🖤
Thank you for making this video!! Luck had nothing to do with your success... You have worked VERY hard to get to where you are and you should be so proud of that hard work and your success!! Also, I know you just became an affiliate with Amazon, which is WONDERFUL!! But, you should also look into putting ads on your videos too. A lot of people I follow on youtube have at least 1 or 2 or more ads during their videos, and I know they get ads revenue from them. You deserve to increase the amount of money you make on youtube since you devote so much time and effort into making these videos and as your viewers we all want you to make as much money as you possibly can for sharing your knowledge and time with us!! We are all rooting for you to be able to continue doing what you love to do for the rest of your life!! 🙏❤😊
Thank you so much! I do have ads on all my videos and get paid from TH-cam! Including on this video! Maybe you got lucky and the ads got glitched out for you! 🖤
Thoroughly enjoyed this video, love your honesty…in all aspects of your journey.. really appreciate this video as l am at the beginning of teaching stained Glass… struggling a little with confidence although l know l have the skills … just way out my comfort zone .thank you 🙏🏼.
Just try to think about it like your talking to friends. I talk to you guys like I'm just on snapchat. Are you teaching on person or online? You can do it!!!
@@MakenzieHallie … my classes start in about a month at a local college outlet … starting with 8 students … 🤞 looking forward to it just a little anxious… thanks for great tip … I’ll definitely keep it in mind …. 👍 Will let you know how it goes… Have a great day 🙏🏼
I love these videos ♡ you give me the confidence to take the leap to do my glass art full time. ♡ watching your videos and how they've changed get over the last couple years is fun to see ♡ thanks for bringing us all along with you girlie ♡
I've been working on stained glass for a few months now and I have to say, while I already wanted to do it, your videos really helped give me that push. I have friends asking when I'm going to start selling my pieces cause they all want them which is amazing, but I am still not happy with my soldering and cant imagine charging anyone for the pieces I have been making haha. I did, however, end up getting a job in a stained glass and leadlighting studio. Mainly admin but I get to play with the glass, but even with my staff discount the glass and other things are soooo expensive (there is a huge mark up here cause of how much it costs to import the glass), but I am so blessed to be there and am getting soo many tips.
Hi! I would love to hear about your childhood. I think it is a huge part of who we are, why we made the decisions we did etc. I am aware that it is very personal. So, only if you would want to share! ❣️ Thank you for being a straight up honest person 🥰
Love these recent videos including DITL. It's been like listening to a friend, which is wonderful. I'm in my 40s and just got into glass a year ago. I've been working in a fast-paced high demand career that has me burned out for probably the last 8 years. I've almost reached a point to quit that, take a sabbatical (at least) and doing some things that bring me joy. But you're right, the reason I'm so torn is because I live on my own, and my extra space is currently set up for my day job (computer, etc.). It's such a difficult decision between work that drains you so much, but provides security, and following one's passion, but which would bring its own stressors. I'm just starting to feel that life is passing me by as I've only been working these past 20 years, always putting myself last. Would be curious to hear more about your life before glass as well. Greetings from Canada.
I appreciate your insight on trying to sell your art. My husband and I are trying to start selling some of our things as well. It's helpful to have the viewpoint of someone who's already been through it. Thank you for sharing. Your content is, as always, very interesting. Side note: I would definitely be interested in hearing a video about you and your Early Childhood. 🙂
Another great video. Do you think starting with customs made your work ten times slower? Because that's how I felt with resin art. It just took a toll on my creativity being an outlet for me. I really don't think I will be doing any more unless it's an unusual or special reason to. These days, I'm seriously considering switching gears completely, buying some basics, making a few pieces to sell around Christmas. Booth fees are high but the flea market charges $40 a day and I could get things rolling if I start now and go hard all November and December. Edit (switch gears to glass work).
Great experience sharing video Kenz about how you got into and how you're managing to survive and exceed in what you love and do...! Just remember "Anything good never comes easy in life" Nobody is going to do it like the way you do it... Also remember Stain glass has been around for centuries... According to Google evidence of stained glass was found in churches and monasteries in Britain back around 675 AD... That's over a thousand years...!!! So I don't think it's going to be going away any time too soon... Also, one other major thing to consider and be thankful for- in your life - is that You Have Your good health on your side to be able to do what you do... Using myself as an example - Even thou I've had cancer and went through Chemo in 1992 then again had cancer in 2003 and in 2012 I lost 80% of my pancreas... I'm still alive being able to do stained glass... Not at the level you do it at - which is remarkable btw- but at a level in my life where I am just happy to be alive & to be able to write back to you and view your TH-cam channel and enjoy watching what you do and how you do it... You have worked very hard and smart at what you do and it definitely shows. To me it's just amazing you have brought the art of stained glass to the level you brought it to... Example: just looking at your shop-Stained Glass Store that “YOU” created… You have 5 Stars...! You should be VERY Proud of yourself for doing all that you have created and done as far as the Art and the business you created out of it… AND in the time you did it…!!! I’m trying to make a go out of it but not at the rate you’re doing at it. I just finished a nice custom-made lamp for my Endourologist… Now I’m working on designing a custom stained-glass clock for this local restaurant… You’re at a whole different level and I’d suggest keep doing what you’re doing because your work is AWESOME…!!!👍👍👌👌
Thank you so much Ray, so kind. You are absolutely right about that. I can vividly remember, one of those few videos I did find all those years ago was someone who didn't have full length arms and didn't have "normal" hands/ fingers -doing & teaching stained glass. Amazing. I think for those of us that have the stained glass bug and are able to physically achieve what we want are already so blessed. I hope you are in remission? Is that the correct term? And I plan on it! I do believe this is it. This is the career I'll have forever. Whatever way that comes. 🖤
@@MakenzieHallie Great to hear Kenz...!!! Stained glass is definitely in your blood from the examples I see in your work and I even see the enthusiasm in the tone of your voice and facial features... This is Definitely Your Life...! Yes you are correct & crossing my fingers re in remission... and I too saw that video of that person with those amazing fingers...! KEEP ON KEEPING ON!!!!!!!!!!!
Have you???!!! I was wondering if you or anyone would know because it is such a unique trait in a glass maker. I haven't seen that video in 6+ years and I can still remember it like it was yesterday. And I'm so glad. I am praying to whatever is out there for you man. Cancer fuc*ing sucks. And thanks. I'm glad my passion translates to on camera. I love it so much.
@@MakenzieHallie You're glass channel is one of the few I watch... The Big - C - It does & Thanks for the prayers...! This guy is amazing at what he does with glass! - Here is that video Kenz... th-cam.com/video/B-xNwYVvorU/w-d-xo.html... Like some of the other TH-cam channels I watch and making me feel like I'm a part of your community, I'd like to say Thank you for taking the time out of your super busy life to reply to me... It definitely means a lot...! I tell my wife that Your husband is a lucky guy...!!! We both agree...!!!
Hell yea Ray, I can't wait to rewatch this video now all these years and stained glass pieces later. Again you are too kind. Me responding is the absolute least I can do, it's why I'm here! We all have to stick together. It's a crazy world out there right now. 🖤
I have skills. Various stuff...nothing really important.. I have subscribed your channel because I find you to be the best with respect to providing good information on the hands on.. While others may be good, your delivery is great as well as your skills. I watch other videos and rate them with respect to you.. They lack.. I make stained glass "stuff" because I want to.... no money involved, so easy for me to play. I will soon buy a kiln as I wish to make bevels in different color glass.. as apparently glass wants to pull back so as to be 1/4 inch thick. Perfect for bevelled glass, as a store nearby on occasion has to fix a church window needing colored bevels. As to your discussion of making a living doing stained glass, I understand and appreciate your issues. And wish you well. If I can help, ask.. John
The thing I learned about big businesses closing branches or moving overseas... is they're still the reason small businesses were crushed. Where there's a need after a business moves out, there's an opportunity to create a small business.
I tried stained glass before I became a fuser, there was no info online for stained glass and the classes in the one local store where sold out six months in advance. I taught myself to fuse, no info about that either. I’m also lucky I have an assmasimg husband who supports me.
It really is such an expensive hobby right now it is really disappointing how costly it is and then you know.. a lot of people don’t want to pay artists a fair price! Uhg 😭 I’m like $250 in the whole just for glass alone on my current project but I love it so much and I know the right person will come along and love it too and pay a fair price 🤞
It really is becoming an unattainable art form for most folks now. And totally agree. I always say as soon as a piece is finished, it has an owner. A specific person it's meant for. ♡ Keep creating!
Hi Makenzie. This was very interesting. Thank you for sharing. As far as your earlier younger life, I would keep that private if I were you. Unless you just feel you need to talk about it. I would love to meet your husband for a quick moment though if possible. I am sure he's a wonderful guy.❤️❣️❤️
He is a wonderful guy! Unfortunately is not comfortable making TH-cam appearances of any kind. 😂 cute. But I love hearing about how people grew up, what makes you say to keep that private? It's what makes us who we are!
Annnnnnnnd...you didn't cut a leaf.....lololol... This is why...we get so into it......we get lost in the cuts. It's a very peaceful, beautiful place to be. The outside world just disappears into our art.
To not share your first piece is sad. If you've come so far, how many people could you help have confidence to try? Especially if you really think it is that bad. It doesn't say anything bad about you to show it. Have you seen what is being sold online? Some of it is very bad... And they are selling and getting good reviews? Ugh. Smh
Lmao I no right? It drives me batty seeing some of the crap being sold online. (Also I have shown my first piece on a video on my channel already) 😂🖤 I just don't love to do it.
@@MakenzieHallie I thought I've seen all your vids... Where is it, lady? I know you rock it now. My first piece has issues too, everyone's first does. 🤪

Maybe the stars just aligned to help your success but I think it’s more your skill and work ethic. I look forward to all your videos and your honesty is refreshing. I see many many years of success in your future.
Thank you so much Donna. I appreciate that so much. 🖤🙏 so glad your enjoying my videos!
Ooh wasnt expecting the vulnerability and honesty. Thank you 🙏
Thank you for your excellent videos!!! Yes, I would love to hear about your childhood!!❤
Thank you so much Kathy! So glad your enjoying my channel. 🖤🌈
Truly appreciate you sharing this and being so vulnerable. You seem so down to earth and real.
Thank you. 🙏🖤 I try my best to show ME.
Thank you for sharing! Thank you for sharing, and I would love to hear your story. Love your channel. ♥️
Thank you for your openness and honesty!
You definately know what you want and are willing to put in the hard work. Very good at what you do.
Thank you so much Sylvia! 🖤🌈🙏
Great info. Lots to think about. I appreciate your insight!
Thanks Dan!! As always, thanks for watching!
You inspire many people!
🙏🙏🖤🖤
You’re the best. Thank you for being honest. Thank you for being an inspiration. Thank you for sharing your videos. Because of your videos, I was able to learn stained glass, so I’m forever grateful. 🙏 Would love a video where you share more about you.
Kk can definitely do that! So glad your enjoying my videos!! 🖤
makenzie you are an awesome lady! thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and inspiring us with your passion!
Thank YOU 🙏🙏🌈🌈🖤🖤
Thank you for sharing your story.
Thank you for sharing!!
Thank you for watching 🖤🖤
You can do anything you set your mind too! One way or another! I support you! 🖤🖤🖤🌈🌈🌈 also I'm sorry you lost your job. 🖤
@@MakenzieHallie Thank you!!! , yea I truly believe that too. You are definitely my inspiration with your art and your drive. I appreciate your words 😊💕
Here if you need anything! 🖤🌈 Thank you. 🙏
@@MakenzieHallie oh thank you that’s very sweet of you!! Means a lot 🌸I’ll be bombarding you with questions now lol
😂😂 fine by me, that's why I'm here!
Hello! Haven't seen you in forever!
Well where you been?!
Love watching you and hearing your stories.
Thank you. 🙏🏻🖤
Will let you know how it goes…
Have a great day 🙏🏼
really interesting talk I dont do stained glass but my mum has went to a couple workshops I work with mixed media, seaglass and sea pottery.
I love these videos ♡ you give me the confidence to take the leap to do my glass art full time. ♡ watching your videos and how they've changed get over the last couple years is fun to see ♡ thanks for bringing us all along with you girlie ♡
You can do absolutely anything you truly set your mind too. 🖤 so glad your enjoying the vids. 🖤🌈🙏
You are an amazing person, artist and teacher THANK YOU !
This is truely a no BS channel
🙏🙏🖤🖤 I try my best.
Hi! I would love to hear about your childhood. I think it is a huge part of who we are, why we made the decisions we did etc. I am aware that it is very personal. So, only if you would want to share! ❣️ Thank you for being a straight up honest person 🥰
Couldn't agree more! I love hearing people's life story. Lol!! ♡♡
Manifestation in its finest! I love real life shit like this!!
🖤🖤🙏🏻🙏🏻🪄🪄🌬🌬
Super super helpful !
🖤🖤🙏🙏
Thank you so much for sharing 💕
🙏🙏🖤🖤
I appreciate your insight on trying to sell your art. My husband and I are trying to start selling some of our things as well. It's helpful to have the viewpoint of someone who's already been through it. Thank you for sharing. Your content is, as always, very interesting.
Side note: I would definitely be interested in hearing a video about you and your Early Childhood. 🙂
Thanks so much Anna! You can do it! Just be strategic and smart about it. 🖤
Id love to hear about your childhood and your background ♡
Can do my friend! 🖤
John
As always, thank you so much my John doe. Will do. 🖤 And all your skills are important. Especially now a days.
How do you price your work? And more importantly, how to price custom order requests? I appreciate you. Thanks 🙋♀️💕
Very good Contact.
Anxiety can happen in any Job when you want it that bad?
thnx for the insight
It really is such an expensive hobby right now it is really disappointing how costly it is and then you know.. a lot of people don’t want to pay artists a fair price! Uhg 😭 I’m like $250 in the whole just for glass alone on my current project but I love it so much and I know the right person will come along and love it too and pay a fair price 🤞
It really is becoming an unattainable art form for most folks now. And totally agree. I always say as soon as a piece is finished, it has an owner. A specific person it's meant for. ♡ Keep creating!
The only thing that can save Stained glass is automation. CNC water jet or CNC scoring.
It's what makes us who we are!
of coarse we want to know every little detail about how you became you
🌈🌈🖤🖤🙏🙏
Want to buy a ringsaw. Want your advice. Kind. And who to buy from. Trust your advice
Annnnnnnnd...you didn't cut a leaf.....lololol... This is why...we get so into it......we get lost in the cuts. It's a very peaceful, beautiful place to be. The outside world just disappears into our art.
Indeed it does!!!
Muaahahaha I'll neverrrr telllllllll. It's at the very end of a video. Thats the ONLY hint I'm giving.
@@MakenzieHallie Oh that evil ego... I'll just imagine it's worse than my first which I did without flux. 🤣
