I'm suprised you got through the game rusing head on in some of thoes situations xD I'm glad you did make it through though! The game is a crazy challenge on the hardest difficulty if you don't allow yourself to lose any squad members. "Favourite" is not the word i would describe the Dead Mans Corner part, but man that hit me hard when I played it first time, and the Purple Heart Lane bridge scene. They really got the athmosphere right, Earned in Blood also has the same gritty Normandy feel. As you said in the beginning i can imagine how awesome a new Brothers in Arms game would be today with the techonlogy to tell the story of the Battle of The Bulge. I could go on for ages about this game. Thx for making the review! p.s. WW2TV has many episodes on the Normandy landings, the host "Woody" is a guide and Normandy expert living in Normandy. Definitely play the other two. It just carries on with an amazing story. Earned in Blood is hands down the best in my opinion. That was the first one I played and when I got old enough to appreciate what Earned in Blood was doing, I played Road to Hill 30 and Hell's Highway. Then I played all three of them in order all over again to connect the story and it is just such an amazing series and story to go with it. On top of all of this there are rumors of a fourth, and legit, Brother in Arms game in the making. Knowing the history of the 101st Airborne, there is still Bastone to fight through.

@@Dog.Dad.Studios You should defenetley play Earned in Blood, they tidy up the mechanics a bit and it has some great missions. Still a very difficult game, be aware of mortars.
Mighta been hells highway actually it was the older one I played it on Xbox the newer one was just as good though imo but the first one was the first time I had gotten that into a game so that’s what I liked best for sure
A little more context about the poles mission: These were part of the Atlantic Wall defenses set up by the Germans to prevent airborne operations. They were called Rommelspargel (or Rommel's Asparagus). Albeit their use was extensive, casualties due to them were actually quite low. But yeah, it a trip down nostalgia lane. Shame that Ubisoft never gave it any love

@@Dog.Dad.Studios Dog dad - just wanted to add, the point of Rommelspargel was to break up and destroy gliders landing on farm fields and other open areas. They were meant to cause casualties among the glider units that the Germans knew were ultimately headed for Normandy. I'm sure the mission is based around removing the poles so that more gliderborne troops and equipment could be landed. Gliders were more or less the parachute infantry's way of landing heavier equipment like jeeps and howitzers (and resupplies). You are clearing the way for reinforcements and resupplies.
Ex Army Scout here, I had never heard of these either but when I saw they were put out in large open fields, I figured they might be used to deny landing spots. a good idea but that’s a tall order to cover a country in them. The amount of Glider troops delivered during WW2 was pretty significant. Famous stories like “A Bridge Too Far” was a unit delivered to the battle by glider. By their nature they were lightly equipped soldiers so running headlong into a heavy armor division was a death sentence. Anyone who was enlisted and ever played the Army’s version of Arma(it’s developed by B.I. But isn’t technically Arma.) it was used to simulate how to command troops and react to certain scenarios. It was Super fun and really a good training tool. They had big full 3d projector rooms with full size Humvees in them, which was a good way to train vehicle crews on various things like react to contact, clearing an ambush, ied etc. The person handling the training would occasionally throw curve balls at you like, wounding a soldier, blowing up or damaging a vehicle. I remember holding off an enemy ambush, having my hoes push right while I and my saw gunner suppressed. Then out of nowhere we get hammered with mortars and a fucking technical showed up. It was a good way to keep you on your toes and teach you to adapt and overcome no matter what. So when I see sone big ass poles in a field blocking off landing spots for re-enforcements, my Scout brain says, “wrap them in Det cord and, cut them shits down! The “Asparagus poles” are such a basic solution but also really a good deterrent to glider re-enforcement. Neat piece of history, that gets overlooked!
@@Ol_Durty_Badger Also wanted to add that irl, the Rommelspargel were meant to be booby trapped, but due to time constraints and overall supply situation in 1944. But, imagine if Rommel was still in command for the second phase of the Normandy campaign, things would not be as smooth sailing, or another Kesselring. Just goes to show high the bar was back then for video game realism and how far it has fallen...
At the end of BIA Hells Highway or BIA earned in Blood is a teaser for the story to be continued in the Ardennes Battle. Im still waiting for that game to be made. Great Video man! :)

Played all three of the series. Hells highway went above from the previous two. They were supposed to do the battle of the bulge. I guess ubisoft halted production after hells highway.
I cannot wait to play. Honestly my Fiance just told me that she'll be out on Friday and Saturday til midday; so I might just get comfy and play through Earned In Blood. Gearbox was actually working on another Brothers in Arms called Furious 4 (trailer might still be here on TH-cam) but cancelled it because of the reaction it got from fans. It was far less realistic and a lot more comical/character based with abilities for each character. Kinda glad they didn’t go that route and tarnish the franchise.
Brothers in arms, LA Noire, World at War and Spec ops the line are the best war games they actually treat war as something traumatic and awful instead of just using war as medium to do cool video game stuff and because of that distinct humanity make them the most refreshing and memorable games ever.
Absolutely, whether that’s in the theater of war or its traumatic aftermath, war is hell, and has effected billions over the centuries. I’m so glad that video games can talk about these topics without hurting anyone. It’s not real, but if it can evoke real emotions, then the game has done its job, at least in my eyes. All the best
yeah its not a shooter but its set in 1947 and most of the main characters are veterans and the pain and horror of that drives the main plot just like the other games above its art imitating life in a way that is rarely seen in most video games. I miss games that can use their platform as art to tell difficult to downright terrible stories in a humanizing way instead of most games which due to the difficulty of making video games usually just try to make a profit that is fun too.
This series is one of my all time favorites! I was 12 when this game came out and my parents let me play it because it was so steeped in the history. Because of this game, I was able to connect with so many WWII veterans that I grew up around and better understand what they went through. They always seemed to appreciate a kid that was curious of their experiences. I learned so much while going through all the historical extras that you unlock that what the veterans talked about made so much more sense since I’d seen aerial photos and virtually walked around these places. Plus the local multiplayer modes in this and Earned in Blood are great! Each player gets to command squads and have reinforcements while tasked with assaulting or defending an objective.
Thank you so much for sharing this memory! This is one of the coolest experiences I've had in my life, hearing about everyone's personal lived experiences with this game. I'm so glad this video is bringing all this good nostalgia! That's truly amazing, and having interest in history is having interest in people. It wasn't until I had a partner that didn't grow up playing videogames that I realised how much I'd learnt from them, particularly war games, and of all of them especially Brothers In Arms made me connect to the historical reality these things were based on.
This was literally my first shooter. I never finished it, and to this day, I still find the game too difficult (not helped by my PS controllers always seeming to break, no matter where I buy from and how gentle I am), but I love it all the same. Matt Baker was my hero for a while, and that game was a big reason I was so into WWII history as a kid and why I love it today. A nice detail that I loved was how the game's manual is written like it's a soldier's notebook, including crude sketches of the guns in the game, and being an artist, that is a big reason I started drawing guns specifically. I even now own some of the guns in the game too, which is cool (some rechambered, some original, and some airsoft, but still fun). I will never forget this game and its amazing intro, characters, atmosphere, and painful yet enrapturing gameplay. The only other game in the series I've played is Hell's Highway, which I bought shortly after it came out while looking through an EB Games. That game, I have finished, and replayed recently, and it holds up well.

My Uncle's father was in WWII in the Navy on the USS California at Saipan first Uncle in Germany post VE Day with the Signal Corps, My friends August Caccavone and Eugene Iconetti fought in the Battle Of The Bulge and Saipan and on Iwo Jima because Gene saw the flag raising on Mt Surabachi and turned 100 last year
We can only hope! Crossing my fingers, even a remaster of Medal of Honor would be insane, and of course Brothers in Arms in unreal 5.0 would be out of this world!!
Medal of Honor Pacific assault has been applauded by historians for being the most accurate game of the mall both historically and gameplay wise. And yet its the one game that never got a sequel.

My dad came home from Iraq and I had turned 5 and he brought back a Fat PS2 and a few games. BIA RTH30 and Earned in Blood were what I was playing at 5. The hand being blown apart was gruesome lol. Played Star Wars battlefront at that time and got SWBF2 my next birthday. Great gaming childhood

I own this on 360..I'm pretty sure my dad got it for me when a video store went out of business. I got like 12 games that day and still got them to this day. I gotta replay it soon

I remember playing this game on my dad's pc back around the time this game came out. I would play through it countless times. I even bought Hell's Highway earlier this week because ubisoft has a sale going on. I started watching this video and decided to buy the other two even though I own them all on physical CD's lmao. I love the assault on the farmhouse mission with Cole's speech: "If it moves, shoot it. If it screams in German, shoot it again"

Well we do have a sub Reddit and a discord server where we occasionally post news and talk about things regarding the game...so just recently we asked Randy pitchford about the New entry and he confirmed it is in development...to be clear we did know it but then layoffs and drama around gearbox came and for sure out of everything we thought they cancelled but his confirmation was recently
I'm currently playing Earned in blood after finishing Road to hill 30 for the first time in my life in 2024 and oh man, this game is outstanding. Graphics aged hard but the core gameplay and feel of the game is an insanity, I'm surprised I haven't found it earlier. After playing cod's, moh's, Hidden&Dangerous Saga (Other game, sad it's gone) Brothers in Arms stand-out the most. Great games.
Loved Hell's Highway. Got a ps3 copy out of a bargain bin and played it 3-4 times before I moved on. But I'll never forget Baker, shame they stopped making these. Hopefully they start it back up
I’d drop everything for a sequel to this in todays graphics engine. Even a remaster of all the titles. Most fun I had in the early 2000s. Replaying these over and over. You should do a series and play through all of them. They’re good! Better Even!

Modern Gearbox could never make a game like this. How the heck did Randy Pitchford not screw it up? I would love a new real brothers in arms game(either ww1, ww2, Korean War, or Vietnam(and Laos and Cambodia). Sometimes I’m happy brothers in arms (furious 4) 4 since that was not brothers in arms at all. It was some hero shooter.
I was hyped for this game when I saw the first demo. I was probably 10 and watched it 100 times. The game kept getting delayed and marketing was scarce. I couldn't believe it when I finally got my hands on a copy. It blew my expectations away. Played it many times through. It scratched every itch and I hate that they didn't make more than they did. Such a sad loss for the gaming world.
We need that Brothers in Arms new game! The devs are working on it since too long 😔 its like a forgotten video game franchise... I miss Killzone aswell

Should definetly play Easy red 2 on steam it take some of the squad mechanics from brothers in arms and gives the game a more battlefield 1942 like experience with some destruction added in.
Great video for a great game. Havent played it in years but can still remember most of the squad names and the sound of that M1 Garand is going to be ingrained in my brain forever.
Played this as a kid, still play it as an adult, never before was there a goat like RTH30 or EIB shame it died if theyd of carried on theyd of made bank, hells highway was mid but still had a great story.
The more I look at 6 days in fallujah, the more I’m curious, but I’m with you, it baffles me that there hasn’t been anything like this or republic commando in so many years. the only thing is wrong about the game is that techinically they are 14! but when the first shot hit the plane he immediately get downed this guy can only be seen essentially in a cut mission and is mentioned in Earned In Blood 19:33 you missed a M1 Garand supply in one of the MG nest early in the mission again fairly missable and in the game editor i think there are for all guns wich u can modify the map how you like ti if you know how to use it and later on purple heart you get a 1903 supply also in the church mission a long side the bazooka tho myself i never manage to run out of ammunition with the main guns because i always calculated my shots and let the squad do the majority of the tasks i got few istance where i take a MP40 and STG44 instead because where overall better the only situations where i ever run out of ammos where Carentan and the last mission due to how many SS are deployed thru out the whole level and at the time in my childhood i never manage to pass carentan mission at Easy because how many germans where in the level and tank too and most of my squad get obliterated before i couldve do something
@@Dog.Dad.Studios because I've play it lot of hours and since I own them still on my PC I sometime due a throwback and play with them (only Earnest In Blood and Road To Hill 30 I have yet to buy Hell's Highway) btw the mission when you lose the Tank is inspired to a real event and the name of the mission is not casual if you put it on Google it will direct you to that same very spot theres also a picture of the aftermath

I would love to see a resurgence in this genre or at least one! Thinking about the game engines out now, there could be so many interesting ways of going back to the material.
I loved Brother in Arms! Find 'em! Fix 'em! Flank 'em! The kinda literal and figurative Fog of war mechanic was really cool. I beat the game once on an easier difficulty relying mainly on CoD style combat. Then spent several weeks playing through and trying to beat each level without firing a shot.
@@Dog.Dad.Studios EXTREMELY difficult and frustrating lol. I think I got the idea from Band of Brothers where Winters noted he didn't fire a single shot for an extended part of their deployment. Definitely noticed all the things you called out. Random 1 shot kills from enemies that don't seem like they can see you, or are fully suppressed. Checkpoints not working, Tanks/Troops not being able move to positions. And just bulky mechanics. I played through most of the games in the series so they kinda blend together a bit. I really remember that Rommel's Asparagus level being difficult.
As a developer I can 100% guarantee that they did not implement a crash intentionally, that would be monumentally stupid. More likely they never considered this scenario occurring and some chain of errors occurs that causes the crash. It's also possible that this worked properly when the game was released, but changes in newer operating systems mean that something that used to work doesn't anymore.

This is one of the few games i finished twice. What a great game. Maybe a remake, but there are so many stories and ways to enhance this...a remake seems basically lazy.
As you said in the beginning i also thought CoD 2 came out before this...damn, its been a long time. I played COD2 first and i was blown away, couple of months later i casually found Road to Hill 30 attached to a PC Magazine, i saw the game cover and i immediately fell in love with it, when i played it, i was not only blown away but i was also thinking: This game is definitely better than CoD & MoH combined. Hands down one of the greatest videogames ive ever played in my life!!
The extras in this game are great, best I've ever seen in any game. That makes this one my favorite. The rest are fine but they're very gamelike in comparison, this first game feels special. I especially love the fact that you can't kill enemies head on, you can only suppress them. Makes the fighting feel something else when you can't just snipe everyone one by one.
Very similar to the single player, instead it was pvp... each player had their AI squads. Very tactical, very immersive, very intense... some of the best multiplayer I ever played. From death match to objectives like destroying or defending AA guns. And if you died you took control of a bot until your squads were wiped for that match.
Cool! at 20:10 I knew that Stuart tank was going to die there because it is based on real life. I recognised the building. That is actually real place known as Dead Mans Corner. I have been to it, its a museum now, worth a visit. You can see photos of that tank knocked out as it is in the game. I think they have the tank on display outside the museum now. Never played this game but I remember playing through Hell's Highway as a kid and it was terrifying. I look forward to when you revisit it.

I tried looking for my physical copy, but didn't find it. I believe, it was written there, that they made the maps in such detail, you could recognize the villages in France after playing. There was also a picture of the destroyed tank. One half was a screenshot, the other was an actual historic photo. Love the game. This may a bit of a spoiler... in the second instalment you play as Red, so it was nice to see him in the video.

I had the PS2 versions od both Road to hill 30 and Earned in blood Although not the best compared to the xbox and pc versions, i fell in loved with both games BECAUSE of the gameplay, story, and characters. Earned in Blood might be my personal favorite. ALLENNGARNETTE!!!
32:54 No. Because COD was a brainless shooter and this was a tactical shooter. They don't get as much fame. Ever. You remember Rainbow Six before Siege? or Ghost Recon before Wildlands? Yeah. that's why. It's not a mass appeal game, it's a military nerd game
Ironically, I do remember Rainbow Six before Siege, I loved doing that tactical map coordination, I thought it was such a neat idea and stark difference to CS 1.6. I actually remember playing this and playing Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood which partially overlaps this game but you play as Red (Cpl Joe Hartsock) in it. I used to have both on ps2 and eventually i got Hell's Highway on ps3 not sure if they made any other games besides those in the series.
BIA was a great game for what concerns historical accuracy, emotional involvement and also graphics was not that bad for the time. They really tried to produce a game issuing a more modern movie-like experience than CoD or MOH, and they really succeeded. The problem was that the game mechanics and gameplay did not always work well. IA was a bit dumb and it often resulted in your squad totally exposed to enemy fire in silly ways. The bullet cinematics also worked in misterious ways, you could have an enemy standing 1m away from you, but a single smg magazine was not enough to take him down. In general, you were not supposed to finish the level on your own, but IA didn’t really let you do things differently. Also, the PlayStation port was not really well done, with the graphics excessively scaled down and blurry.

My favorite WW2 game has always been Medal of Honor Airborne. The graphics at the time it was released were just nuts and still hold up well. Jumping out of planes and being able to actually STEER the parachute, the Sniping with adjustable zoom scopes! picking off Nazis from the high ground with headshots was unbelievable, bouncing grenades off walls in building to building fighting, fighting tanks, setting demo charges.. the whole thing was super immersive, and is the sole reason I still maintain a second older machine that has an optical drive cuz sadly EA has shut down servers so single-player is the only option. There were a few glitches here and there, but overall a killer game. Jeez I didnt even mention the upgradeable weapons as you progress... bigger magazines, , faster boltes, rifle grenades.. nuts.

I just want a modern game like this. I’ve wanted a ps2 for years to play games like this, Star Wars battlefront, the LOTR games, burnout games like there was so many amazing fucking games.

i played also the DLC (?) extension? "Earned in blood" that was more of the same, and i played also Hell's Highway which is my best WWII game ever - very underrated!!
Loved this and the PS2 sequel where you could use the FG-42. Both PS2 versions had this crazy verisimilitude going on where the explosion effects had this almost newsreel style sound and knocking out tanks using a panzerfaust was so scary, as well as soldiers just dropping like a sack of potatoes once being taken down, just seemed more stark. The Hells Highway one was good, but it seemed too sunny and too colorful at times which took away from the drab dread of the earlier two.
It’s a cool concept for a ww2 game. What frustrated me the most as a kid was that the guns felt annoyingly inaccurate. It became to a point where the game felt like it was punishing you for trying to get a hard to hit but doable shot. Plus the whole suppression system was a little hard to grasp (having a red circle constantly a top of enemies takes you out the game for an FPS) and pretty janky. As an RTS, this would be fine but it translated poorly to a squad based WW2 FPS. Something closer to cod production with more simple squad commands would’ve been a better product for its time.
Oh yeah I didn't like the artificial disadvantage, because that's not how guns work; if they had insane sway, but the bullets actually went in the direction of the gun, that would be different. The only BIA I was ever able to completely finish was "Hell's Highway" ... beat it several times. Still own it but all 3 of my PS3s need the discount reader replaced

I can't tell you why, I was maybe 5 years old when I played this game, never beat it. For some reason, that scene at 3:48 really stuck with me throughout the years and it came to my mind randomly for over a decade until I found the title of this game again.
Wow, memory is an interesting friend, I think i had something similar with not remembering scooby-do and zombie island.. there is a scene that has stuck with me for years and I couldn't remember until seeing a video about that exact scene. Hope all is well, thanks for commenting!
Played this game at launch on PC. Had just finished sergeant school and was drilling my first batch og recruits. This game was awesome. Funny thing I never knew aiming was intentionally impaired - I just assumed I sucked and needed a better pc 😅 Carentan map sucked - almost made med quit too in frustration

This was definitely my all time favourite! After that Earned in Blood ofcourse..Nowadays I can sadly only play Hell's Highways as I have no console that is able to play the first two parts. Still hoping one day there might be a part four even though I know better!

I always wished they’d make a modern game about the US Army like this. Today modern shooters are always CIA and Special Forces. Just do some regular army infantry troops.
It reminds me of AA something game, it was made by the armed forces and was around Fallujah or somewhere in the Middle East. It had some squad gameplay, I remember it because there was online and it was on the mac ahah. Thanks for commenting!
Oh man Brothers in Arms Hells Highway was one of the games I got when my parents bought my brother and I a Xbox 360 Elite. I remember that game being scary, the firs missions is like some scary ass asylum and another mission had a scary ghost scene. I honestly don't know how these games can make a world feel so big and vast, and create such detailed scenery. Theres something about having a loud firefight, then silence after defeating the opposing force. Not knowing when more are going to pop up again.
Still own my copies of BIA 1 and 2 on og xbox and 360 and the last games from gearbox i liked. oh and both those games had prob the best ragdoll systems of their respective times too, so much fun.
u should try BIA: Earned in Blood, there's not really much changes but it has a good AI improvements like the krauts would try to storm ur position if u are pinned down and they would likely to move around when got flanked rather than staying in one place like Road To Hill 30

Amazing game. Earned in Blood was my favorite though for the splitscreen. You could coop missions and each get soldiers to command. Or you could 1v1 and both of you have command of a whole squad. It was incredible and no game has ever done it since.
I had the second game (Earned in Blood) but got put off right in start by the accuracy-penalizing mechanic and didn't play it again until I forgot about the whole game. I really wish I hadn't.
This was my first shooter on the OG Xbox. I loved it so much, but I was far too young to be playing it and I swear Leggett’s death haunted me for like a week lmao. Happy to see this get some overdue love!

I played the absolute shit outta hill 30 and earned in blood when they came out, i was around 10-12yrs old at the time. I was able to pick up on the playstyle of the games by one of the extras videos explaining the 4 Fs of combat they used (find em, fix em, flank em, finish em) understanding having riflemen and BAR as surpressing fire to pin the enemy and submachines as assualt/charge units to flank them. I was able to command like a champion, i ended up beating both games on all difficulties and felt like it was a solid accomplishment for how hard it got. Good tip for killing tanks is baker in hill 30 and hartsock in earned in blood can one tap tanks if u manage to get behind them with a grenade, u can climb on the tank and drop a grenade in the hatch. I do have to say the third game is a bit more arcadey, baker becomes a bit of a one man army as they increased player accuracy a lot to the point u can snipe dudes with a tommy gun across a field and if i remember correctly u are given a lot more ammunition in that one as well. The story telling is still really good in it though worth playing to round out the trilogy.

Ive never played this one but ive played the heck out of Hells Highway. Was the first ww2 game that made me kinda sit back and say "woah, games are getting really good."

The bridge scene relates to what they call "purple heart lane" where the company was strafed by Stuka dive bombers on 2nd or 3rd bridge on the approach to Carentan and around 30 men were blown to pieces. I might be wrong with this tho
brothers in arms made me stop appreciating call of duty and action shooters forever... since then I only looked for titles that had a special personality
Quite ironic that the most BS mission, Buying the Farm, is also one of the few fully fictional missions in the game. Not based on any historical event or place (the farm itself is an amalgamation of several different existing buildings in Normandy)
I play through all 3 every year or so. Love these games, they really don't make them like this anymore. Which is sad, because imagine what they could do with modern technology!
Last year I bought the retail versions of the games and recently picked them up on Steam, all of them for less than £5. Fantastic games well worth playing

Loved this game. Not sure about the complaining about the MG nests and tanks one shotting him. He keeps approaching these strongpoints as 1 soldier with a rifle and expects the game to allow him to take it out. I agreed with most of his sentiments about the game, but by watching his gameplay, he's so programmed to run and gun that he gets frustrated when he can't just rip through the level with his most basic tactics.

He man what is a important addition to the game are the making of videos you earn by completing the missions. It also explains alot about the levels and historical info. The poles are calles ''Rommels Asperges'' its explained in the video's

The game is a crazy challenge on the hardest difficulty if you don't allow yourself to lose any squad members.
"Favourite" is not the word i would describe the Dead Mans Corner part, but man that hit me hard when I played it first time, and the Purple Heart Lane bridge scene.
They really got the athmosphere right, Earned in Blood also has the same gritty Normandy feel.
As you said in the beginning i can imagine how awesome a new Brothers in Arms game would be today with the techonlogy to tell the story of the Battle of The Bulge.

Definitely play the other two. It just carries on with an amazing story. Earned in Blood is hands down the best in my opinion. That was the first one I played and when I got old enough to appreciate what Earned in Blood was doing, I played Road to Hill 30 and Hell's Highway. Then I played all three of them in order all over again to connect the story and it is just such an amazing series and story to go with it. On top of all of this there are rumors of a fourth, and legit, Brother in Arms game in the making. Knowing the history of the 101st Airborne, there is still Bastone to fight through.
The third one was the best in my opinion though I loved them all. This series is at the very top of my wish list for a new installation.

You should defenetley play Earned in Blood, they tidy up the mechanics a bit and it has some great missions. Still a very difficult game, be aware of mortars.

Mighta been hells highway actually it was the older one I played it on Xbox the newer one was just as good though imo but the first one was the first time I had gotten that into a game so that’s what I liked best for sure
A little more context about the poles mission: These were part of the Atlantic Wall defenses set up by the Germans to prevent airborne operations. They were called Rommelspargel (or Rommel's Asparagus). Albeit their use was extensive, casualties due to them were actually quite low. But yeah, it a trip down nostalgia lane. Shame that Ubisoft never gave it any love

@@Dog.Dad.Studios Dog dad - just wanted to add, the point of Rommelspargel was to break up and destroy gliders landing on farm fields and other open areas. They were meant to cause casualties among the glider units that the Germans knew were ultimately headed for Normandy. I'm sure the mission is based around removing the poles so that more gliderborne troops and equipment could be landed. Gliders were more or less the parachute infantry's way of landing heavier equipment like jeeps and howitzers (and resupplies). You are clearing the way for reinforcements and resupplies.

Ex Army Scout here, I had never heard of these either but when I saw they were put out in large open fields, I figured they might be used to deny landing spots. a good idea but that’s a tall order to cover a country in them. The amount of Glider troops delivered during WW2 was pretty significant. Famous stories like “A Bridge Too Far” was a unit delivered to the battle by glider. By their nature they were lightly equipped soldiers so running headlong into a heavy armor division was a death sentence. Anyone who was enlisted and ever played the Army’s version of Arma(it’s developed by B.I. But isn’t technically Arma.) it was used to simulate how to command troops and react to certain scenarios. It was Super fun and really a good training tool. They had big full 3d projector rooms with full size Humvees in them, which was a good way to train vehicle crews on various things like react to contact, clearing an ambush, ied etc. The person handling the training would occasionally throw curve balls at you like, wounding a soldier, blowing up or damaging a vehicle. I remember holding off an enemy ambush, having my hoes push right while I and my saw gunner suppressed. Then out of nowhere we get hammered with mortars and a fucking technical showed up. It was a good way to keep you on your toes and teach you to adapt and overcome no matter what. So when I see sone big ass poles in a field blocking off landing spots for re-enforcements, my Scout brain says, “wrap them in Det cord and, cut them shits down! The “Asparagus poles” are such a basic solution but also really a good deterrent to glider re-enforcement. Neat piece of history, that gets overlooked!
@@Ol_Durty_Badger Also wanted to add that irl, the Rommelspargel were meant to be booby trapped, but due to time constraints and overall supply situation in 1944. But, imagine if Rommel was still in command for the second phase of the Normandy campaign, things would not be as smooth sailing, or another Kesselring.
Just goes to show high the bar was back then for video game realism and how far it has fallen...
At the end of BIA Hells Highway or BIA earned in Blood is a teaser for the story to be continued in the Ardennes Battle. Im still waiting for that game to be made. Great Video man! :)

Played all three of the series. Hells highway went above from the previous two. They were supposed to do the battle of the bulge. I guess ubisoft halted production after hells highway.

Should be able to finish them within a day or two. These older games were short but memorable.
Gearbox was actually working on another Brothers in Arms called Furious 4 (trailer might still be here on TH-cam) but cancelled it because of the reaction it got from fans. It was far less realistic and a lot more comical/character based with abilities for each character. Kinda glad they didn’t go that route and tarnish the franchise.

Brothers in arms, LA Noire, World at War and Spec ops the line are the best war games they actually treat war as something traumatic and awful instead of just using war as medium to do cool video game stuff and because of that distinct humanity make them the most refreshing and memorable games ever.

Absolutely, whether that’s in the theater of war or its traumatic aftermath, war is hell, and has effected billions over the centuries.
I’m so glad that video games can talk about these topics without hurting anyone. It’s not real, but if it can evoke real emotions, then the game has done its job, at least in my eyes.

yeah its not a shooter but its set in 1947 and most of the main characters are veterans and the pain and horror of that drives the main plot just like the other games above its art imitating life in a way that is rarely seen in most video games. I miss games that can use their platform as art to tell difficult to downright terrible stories in a humanizing way instead of most games which due to the difficulty of making video games usually just try to make a profit that is fun too.

Try Hell let loose. PTSD simulator but its brilliant.
This series is one of my all time favorites! I was 12 when this game came out and my parents let me play it because it was so steeped in the history. Because of this game, I was able to connect with so many WWII veterans that I grew up around and better understand what they went through. They always seemed to appreciate a kid that was curious of their experiences. I learned so much while going through all the historical extras that you unlock that what the veterans talked about made so much more sense since I’d seen aerial photos and virtually walked around these places.
Plus the local multiplayer modes in this and Earned in Blood are great! Each player gets to command squads and have reinforcements while tasked with assaulting or defending an objective.
Thank you so much for sharing this memory! This is one of the coolest experiences I've had in my life, hearing about everyone's personal lived experiences with this game. I'm so glad this video is bringing all this good nostalgia! That's truly amazing, and having interest in history is having interest in people. It wasn't until I had a partner that didn't grow up playing videogames that I realised how much I'd learnt from them, particularly war games, and of all of them especially Brothers In Arms made me connect to the historical reality these things were based on.
This was literally my first shooter. I never finished it, and to this day, I still find the game too difficult (not helped by my PS controllers always seeming to break, no matter where I buy from and how gentle I am), but I love it all the same. Matt Baker was my hero for a while, and that game was a big reason I was so into WWII history as a kid and why I love it today. A nice detail that I loved was how the game's manual is written like it's a soldier's notebook, including crude sketches of the guns in the game, and being an artist, that is a big reason I started drawing guns specifically. I even now own some of the guns in the game too, which is cool (some rechambered, some original, and some airsoft, but still fun). I will never forget this game and its amazing intro, characters, atmosphere, and painful yet enrapturing gameplay.
The only other game in the series I've played is Hell's Highway, which I bought shortly after it came out while looking through an EB Games. That game, I have finished, and replayed recently, and it holds up well.

My Uncle's father was in WWII in the Navy on the USS California at Saipan first Uncle in Germany post VE Day with the Signal Corps, My friends August Caccavone and Eugene Iconetti fought in the Battle Of The Bulge and Saipan and on Iwo Jima because Gene saw the flag raising on Mt Surabachi and turned 100 last year

My dad came home from Iraq and I had turned 5 and he brought back a Fat PS2 and a few games. BIA RTH30 and Earned in Blood were what I was playing at 5. The hand being blown apart was gruesome lol. Played Star Wars battlefront at that time and got SWBF2 my next birthday. Great gaming childhood

I remember playing this game on my dad's pc back around the time this game came out. I would play through it countless times. I even bought Hell's Highway earlier this week because ubisoft has a sale going on. I started watching this video and decided to buy the other two even though I own them all on physical CD's lmao. I love the assault on the farmhouse mission with Cole's speech: "If it moves, shoot it. If it screams in German, shoot it again"

I'm currently playing Earned in blood after finishing Road to hill 30 for the first time in my life in 2024 and oh man, this game is outstanding. Graphics aged hard but the core gameplay and feel of the game is an insanity, I'm surprised I haven't found it earlier. After playing cod's, moh's, Hidden&Dangerous Saga (Other game, sad it's gone) Brothers in Arms stand-out the most. Great games.
Wait til you play Hell's Highway, all the fun and the graphics actually hold up.

Loved Hell's Highway. Got a ps3 copy out of a bargain bin and played it 3-4 times before I moved on. But I'll never forget Baker, shame they stopped making these. Hopefully they start it back up
Those bargain bins were the original steam sales.. I remember getting fable 2 for like 5$ and that was an insane money to time value.

Modern Gearbox could never make a game like this. How the heck did Randy Pitchford not screw it up? I would love a new real brothers in arms game(either ww1, ww2, Korean War, or Vietnam(and Laos and Cambodia). Sometimes I’m happy brothers in arms (furious 4) 4 since that was not brothers in arms at all. It was some hero shooter.

I was hyped for this game when I saw the first demo. I was probably 10 and watched it 100 times. The game kept getting delayed and marketing was scarce. I couldn't believe it when I finally got my hands on a copy. It blew my expectations away. Played it many times through. It scratched every itch and I hate that they didn't make more than they did. Such a sad loss for the gaming world.

Should definetly play Easy red 2 on steam it take some of the squad mechanics from brothers in arms and gives the game a more battlefield 1942 like experience with some destruction added in.

The more I look at 6 days in fallujah, the more I’m curious, but I’m with you, it baffles me that there hasn’t been anything like this or republic commando in so many years. I still play the classic Brothers in arms games for Xbox i enjoyed hell highway too so im looking for that game then im set
Just started Earned in Blood, not close to Road to Hill 30, but I've heard nothing but good things about hell's highway, so I'm excited to get there!
I was 18 when this game came out and loved it. Multiplayer was pretty great as well.
I've heard the multiplayer was a lot of fun! Goes to show how a new gen game of this series could do very well!
the only thing is wrong about the game is that techinically they are 14! but when the first shot hit the plane he immediately get downed this guy can only be seen essentially in a cut mission and is mentioned in Earned In Blood
19:33 you missed a M1 Garand supply in one of the MG nest early in the mission again fairly missable and in the game editor i think there are for all guns wich u can modify the map how you like ti if you know how to use it and later on purple heart you get a 1903 supply also in the church mission a long side the bazooka tho myself i never manage to run out of ammunition with the main guns because i always calculated my shots and let the squad do the majority of the tasks i got few istance where i take a MP40 and STG44 instead because where overall better the only situations where i ever run out of ammos where Carentan and the last mission due to how many SS are deployed thru out the whole level and at the time in my childhood i never manage to pass carentan mission at Easy because how many germans where in the level and tank too and most of my squad get obliterated before i couldve do something

@@Dog.Dad.Studios because I've play it lot of hours and since I own them still on my PC I sometime due a throwback and play with them (only Earnest In Blood and Road To Hill 30 I have yet to buy Hell's Highway) btw the mission when you lose the Tank is inspired to a real event and the name of the mission is not casual if you put it on Google it will direct you to that same very spot theres also a picture of the aftermath

I would love to see a resurgence in this genre or at least one! Thinking about the game engines out now, there could be so many interesting ways of going back to the material.

The kinda literal and figurative Fog of war mechanic was really cool. I beat the game once on an easier difficulty relying mainly on CoD style combat. Then spent several weeks playing through and trying to beat each level without firing a shot.

@@Dog.Dad.Studios EXTREMELY difficult and frustrating lol. I think I got the idea from Band of Brothers where Winters noted he didn't fire a single shot for an extended part of their deployment.
Definitely noticed all the things you called out.
Random 1 shot kills from enemies that don't seem like they can see you, or are fully suppressed. Checkpoints not working, Tanks/Troops not being able move to positions. And just bulky mechanics. I played through most of the games in the series so they kinda blend together a bit.
I really remember that Rommel's Asparagus level being difficult.

What made you restart the game?
As a developer I can 100% guarantee that they did not implement a crash intentionally, that would be monumentally stupid. More likely they never considered this scenario occurring and some chain of errors occurs that causes the crash. It's also possible that this worked properly when the game was released, but changes in newer operating systems mean that something that used to work doesn't anymore.

Don't much play any war based games these days since most of them are online play driven and the campaigns are usually weak plotted afterthoughts. And SHORT.
This is one of the few games i finished twice. What a great game. Maybe a remake, but there are so many stories and ways to enhance this...a remake seems basically lazy.
As you said in the beginning i also thought CoD 2 came out before this...damn, its been a long time. I played COD2 first and i was blown away, couple of months later i casually found Road to Hill 30 attached to a PC Magazine, i saw the game cover and i immediately fell in love with it, when i played it, i was not only blown away but i was also thinking: This game is definitely better than CoD & MoH combined. Hands down one of the greatest videogames ive ever played in my life!!

The extras in this game are great, best I've ever seen in any game. That makes this one my favorite. The rest are fine but they're very gamelike in comparison, this first game feels special. I especially love the fact that you can't kill enemies head on, you can only suppress them. Makes the fighting feel something else when you can't just snipe everyone one by one.

Single player was great but the multiplayer in 1 & 2 was phenomenal...
What was the multiplayer like?
Very similar to the single player, instead it was pvp... each player had their AI squads. Very tactical, very immersive, very intense... some of the best multiplayer I ever played. From death match to objectives like destroying or defending AA guns. And if you died you took control of a bot until your squads were wiped for that match.
Cool! at 20:10 I knew that Stuart tank was going to die there because it is based on real life. I recognised the building. That is actually real place known as Dead Mans Corner. I have been to it, its a museum now, worth a visit. You can see photos of that tank knocked out as it is in the game. I think they have the tank on display outside the museum now.
Never played this game but I remember playing through Hell's Highway as a kid and it was terrifying. I look forward to when you revisit it.

I tried looking for my physical copy, but didn't find it. I believe, it was written there, that they made the maps in such detail, you could recognize the villages in France after playing. There was also a picture of the destroyed tank. One half was a screenshot, the other was an actual historic photo. Love the game. This may a bit of a spoiler... in the second instalment you play as Red, so it was nice to see him in the video.

I had the PS2 versions od both Road to hill 30 and Earned in blood
Although not the best compared to the xbox and pc versions, i fell in loved with both games BECAUSE of the gameplay, story, and characters. Earned in Blood might be my personal favorite. ALLENNGARNETTE!!!

Ironically, I do remember Rainbow Six before Siege, I loved doing that tactical map coordination, I thought it was such a neat idea and stark difference to CS 1.6. I actually remember playing this and playing Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood which partially overlaps this game but you play as Red (Cpl Joe Hartsock) in it. I used to have both on ps2 and eventually i got Hell's Highway on ps3 not sure if they made any other games besides those in the series.

BIA was a great game for what concerns historical accuracy, emotional involvement and also graphics was not that bad for the time. They really tried to produce a game issuing a more modern movie-like experience than CoD or MOH, and they really succeeded. The problem was that the game mechanics and gameplay did not always work well. IA was a bit dumb and it often resulted in your squad totally exposed to enemy fire in silly ways. The bullet cinematics also worked in misterious ways, you could have an enemy standing 1m away from you, but a single smg magazine was not enough to take him down. In general, you were not supposed to finish the level on your own, but IA didn’t really let you do things differently. Also, the PlayStation port was not really well done, with the graphics excessively scaled down and blurry.

My favorite WW2 game has always been Medal of Honor Airborne. The graphics at the time it was released were just nuts and still hold up well. Jumping out of planes and being able to actually STEER the parachute, the Sniping with adjustable zoom scopes! picking off Nazis from the high ground with headshots was unbelievable, bouncing grenades off walls in building to building fighting, fighting tanks, setting demo charges.. the whole thing was super immersive, and is the sole reason I still maintain a second older machine that has an optical drive cuz sadly EA has shut down servers so single-player is the only option. There were a few glitches here and there, but overall a killer game. Jeez I didnt even mention the upgradeable weapons as you progress... bigger magazines, , faster boltes, rifle grenades.. nuts.

Loved this and the PS2 sequel where you could use the FG-42. Both PS2 versions had this crazy verisimilitude going on where the explosion effects had this almost newsreel style sound and knocking out tanks using a panzerfaust was so scary, as well as soldiers just dropping like a sack of potatoes once being taken down, just seemed more stark.
The Hells Highway one was good, but it seemed too sunny and too colorful at times which took away from the drab dread of the earlier two.

It’s a cool concept for a ww2 game. What frustrated me the most as a kid was that the guns felt annoyingly inaccurate. It became to a point where the game felt like it was punishing you for trying to get a hard to hit but doable shot.
Plus the whole suppression system was a little hard to grasp (having a red circle constantly a top of enemies takes you out the game for an FPS) and pretty janky.
As an RTS, this would be fine but it translated poorly to a squad based WW2 FPS. Something closer to cod production with more simple squad commands would’ve been a better product for its time.
Oh yeah I didn't like the artificial disadvantage, because that's not how guns work; if they had insane sway, but the bullets actually went in the direction of the gun, that would be different. I completely agree with the RTS comment, and it did remind me of Steel Division 2. Thanks so much for taking the time to respond! All the best,

I can't tell you why, I was maybe 5 years old when I played this game, never beat it. For some reason, that scene at 3:48 really stuck with me throughout the years and it came to my mind randomly for over a decade until I found the title of this game again.

Played this game at launch on PC. Had just finished sergeant school and was drilling my first batch og recruits. This game was awesome.
Funny thing I never knew aiming was intentionally impaired - I just assumed I sucked and needed a better pc 😅

I always wished they’d make a modern game about the US Army like this. Today modern shooters are always CIA and Special Forces. Just do some regular army infantry troops.
It reminds me of AA something game, it was made by the armed forces and was around Fallujah or somewhere in the Middle East. It had some squad gameplay, I remember it because there was online and it was on the mac ahah. Thanks for commenting!
Oh man Brothers in Arms Hells Highway was one of the games I got when my parents bought my brother and I a Xbox 360 Elite. I remember that game being scary, the firs missions is like some scary ass asylum and another mission had a scary ghost scene. I honestly don't know how these games can make a world feel so big and vast, and create such detailed scenery. Theres something about having a loud firefight, then silence after defeating the opposing force. Not knowing when more are going to pop up again.

Still own my copies of BIA 1 and 2 on og xbox and 360 and the last games from gearbox i liked. oh and both those games had prob the best ragdoll systems of their respective times too, so much fun.

u should try BIA: Earned in Blood, there's not really much changes but it has a good AI improvements like the krauts would try to storm ur position if u are pinned down and they would likely to move around when got flanked rather than staying in one place like Road To Hill 30

Amazing game. Earned in Blood was my favorite though for the splitscreen. You could coop missions and each get soldiers to command. Or you could 1v1 and both of you have command of a whole squad. It was incredible and no game has ever done it since.

I had the second game (Earned in Blood) but got put off right in start by the accuracy-penalizing mechanic and didn't play it again until I forgot about the whole game. I really wish I hadn't.
I get that playing through earned in blood now. Also Red is not as good as baker, like by 1000 yards
This was my first shooter on the OG Xbox. I loved it so much, but I was far too young to be playing it and I swear Leggett’s death haunted me for like a week lmao. Happy to see this get some overdue love!

I played the absolute shit outta hill 30 and earned in blood when they came out, i was around 10-12yrs old at the time. I was able to pick up on the playstyle of the games by one of the extras videos explaining the 4 Fs of combat they used (find em, fix em, flank em, finish em) understanding having riflemen and BAR as surpressing fire to pin the enemy and submachines as assualt/charge units to flank them. I was able to command like a champion, i ended up beating both games on all difficulties and felt like it was a solid accomplishment for how hard it got.
Good tip for killing tanks is baker in hill 30 and hartsock in earned in blood can one tap tanks if u manage to get behind them with a grenade, u can climb on the tank and drop a grenade in the hatch.
I do have to say the third game is a bit more arcadey, baker becomes a bit of a one man army as they increased player accuracy a lot to the point u can snipe dudes with a tommy gun across a field and if i remember correctly u are given a lot more ammunition in that one as well. The story telling is still really good in it though worth playing to round out the trilogy.

Ive never played this one but ive played the heck out of Hells Highway. Was the first ww2 game that made me kinda sit back and say "woah, games are getting really good."

The bridge scene relates to what they call "purple heart lane" where the company was strafed by Stuka dive bombers on 2nd or 3rd bridge on the approach to Carentan and around 30 men were blown to pieces. I might be wrong with this tho

Quite ironic that the most BS mission, Buying the Farm, is also one of the few fully fictional missions in the game. Not based on any historical event or place (the farm itself is an amalgamation of several different existing buildings in Normandy)

Last year I bought the retail versions of the games and recently picked them up on Steam, all of them for less than £5. Fantastic games well worth playing

Loved this game. Not sure about the complaining about the MG nests and tanks one shotting him. He keeps approaching these strongpoints as 1 soldier with a rifle and expects the game to allow him to take it out. I agreed with most of his sentiments about the game, but by watching his gameplay, he's so programmed to run and gun that he gets frustrated when he can't just rip through the level with his most basic tactics.

He man what is a important addition to the game are the making of videos you earn by completing the missions. It also explains alot about the levels and historical info. The poles are calles ''Rommels Asperges'' its explained in the video's
