Midnight 01 (deep sea diver) is the most slept on track on the ooz album. the last three songs on the album have such a nice vibe to them and end the album amazingly, but since they are last they are kinda forgotten about.
The live version of deep sea diver is probably my favorite song ever

Those swelling, blissful moments shouldn't be that confusing when the album is clearly sequential and you mentioned themes of addiction earlier in the review. Wouldn't be the first time Archy has done that either, take "Emergency Blimp" from The OOZ for example. That song is about being misprescribed by a doctor and is full of these chiming, ringing guitars that are meant to replicate the ringing in the ears sensation; illustrating the lyrics.
And that's the key difference on Man Alive! compared to The OOZ. On this one Archy used the soundscape a whole lot more to tell the story, which made it a lot easier to interpret. Probably why this album worked for you but you couldn't grasp The OOZ. Those who loved it recognized the constant lyrical themes, and probably how the deep sea diver and space cadet were their own characters; the diver used to depict themes of isolation and depression, while the cadet was more up and optimistic. Btw, the cover of The OOZ is the space cadet (depicted on "The Cadet Leaps"). It all just wasn't accented by the soundscape in the same way it was on this album.
Archy originally shared "Please Complete Thee" as a song called "What Stars?" on his Soundcloud. You can still find it. If you want to compare the differences in approach on Man Alive! to The OOZ, listen to both those tracks back-to-back. I think it shows it pretty well. Lyrically there wasnt quite as much on this album as their was on The OOZ, but the bit it gave up there it definitely gained sonically.

Dibil Idiot I have my own opinion lol, I just like it when melon and I agree. It’s nice to hear somebody reiterate how I feel about a piece of art, especially when it’s articulated well.
I liked The Ooz's song structure, it felt raw and loose. The music on that album creates, in my opinion, stronger environments, which yes can feel less articulate but more sonically interesting to live in, and more alive even. I like that I can't always hear his singing. Its like he's in such a sad state that he doesn't want to be heard, and is used to it. Now you could say I'm reading into thing, but hell thats were beauty in art really begins. Thats how art becomes personal

James I’d even argue that The OOZ wasn’t well received by King Krule fans as much as it was by those hearing Archy for the first time. Super different from 6FBTM, and had I expected more of that going in, I probably would’ve been caught off guard.

finally someone used the words "Lynchian nightmare" to describe King Krule's music
Although i do enjoy this record a lot, there's certainly something to be said about The Ooz that makes that such a masterful album in my opinion. The dreary and despondent sounds mixed in with all the heartbreaking lyricism. On top of that, I really love that the tracks are mainly either Lunar themed or Deep Sea Floor themed. Makes me think about how much everything comes together to leave you feeling isolated and alone, as if you were sunken to some fictional world where you are SURROUNDED by every single theme on display throughout the record. And I guess I just love the musicality of it all. I've come to like every track on it as they all feel like experiences for me. Not one part I hate about it. Even though you don't like the album I'm glad I've gotten to enjoy it so much over the few years it's been out. Enjoyed the review fanta strawberry, keep it up.
I still think that The OOZ is the better record, but I'm very biased as the record helped me through a lot of dark times and means a lot to me. But overall this is a FANTASTIC release by Archy. My only problem was the ending could've been better in my opinion.

Listening to the OOZ while commuting to work in southeast London, i felt more connected to an album than i ever had. The lost hopes and aspirations, the confusing euphoria mixed with disappointment of spending your life in London. The weirdness of it all, who are these people, why are these places so conflicting. I dont live there anymore, but am still the same person with the same connections with the same places and people - i feel like that is exactly what Man Alive! is all about. But that my own anecdotal take on it. Both albums, subjectively, are some of the best and most relatable ive heard in some time.
I think both albums are complete indulgence by Archie, fictionalising and exadgerrating scenarios - but thats not to say it doesnt work(for some).

I have been binge watching Twin Peaks over the last week, and as soon as I heard this album, I kept thinking how well these two flowed together in my mind. Kind of surprised you so directly mentioned what I had been fantasizing about. David Lynch, King Krule, forever.
I don’t understand why he hates draag on so much, that was my favorite from the album
same. but it’s because it’s the most OOZ esque track on here that it’s his least favorite.

personally i would give this record a strong 9 or 10. there are only a few songs on it that i would listen to on theyre own but as an whole album this kills me.
first listen gave me goosebumps and although i do not understand every lyric the sound of his voice and the instruments create such a vivid atmosphere

how fascinating... The OOZ was my album of the year in 2017 and i found this record to be much more inconsistent than it. its emotions felt much less potent to me. it's so weird how we can have nearly opposite viewpoints on these things. im sure man alive will grow on me but still this review was a far cry from how i reacted to the record on first and second listen in comparison with archy's last album

Hello Anthony! You were right on the vocal sample: Archie has reportedly used heavily edited chops of an acapella Nilüfer Yanya sent him throughout the songs of "Man Alive!"
The original track is named "Small Crimes", and it was released some years before Yanya's debut album "Miss Universe" (that you actually didn't really like, I know... 😅).
As of July 28th this is my Album of the Year.

I felt like had to give this one a higher score because of the general public who loves Archy. Also, in some sense, Anthony's reviews sometimes can give a boost to some careers which might be the case this time around. The not so positive reviews of the previous projects might have had an effect of Krules music in the past. I hope it works out for Archy now. He deserves more recognition.

I knew you'd like this one more than the ooz. it's more direct and melodic with tighter song structures. As a fan of his overall vibe i could totally understand why you didn't dig the ooz. It really just depends on the vibe you like.
its probably the most difficult thing for me about making music, the balance between raw energy and emotion and harnessing and arranging it well
Man, I really am trying to like this record. I’m a pretty big Archy fan and loved 6 Ft Beneath the Moon and the OOZ, but I just can’t get myself to like this record so far. I think the Guardian’s review of this record reflects my feelings on the album, with there not really being enough momentum on the album to make it enjoyable- I found it quite boring. There just aren’t any tracks like Dum Surfer on the new record, which were a break from the bleak and sometimes non-existent song structure. Maybe on this record Archy was trying to convey a more direct sense of bleak despair and hopelessness- without much melody to hold on to. Anyways, I feel like we have opposite viewpoints on Archy’s 2 most recent albums, and I will definitely give this record a listen a few more times to see if this grows on me.

I love both of these albums equally, while I believe that man alive is maybe the easier and more respondent of the 2, the ooz sounds exactly what its name suggests, a thick, grimey and despondant album, the lyrics are beautiful on both, I was a bigger man alive fan for a long time before what archy was doing on the ooz really clicked with me. Either way, archie making beautiful music as always, cant wait for what he has for the future.

I do like this album but am kind of disappointed at the same time, I feel like they are great songs but are so much better live. The way a lot of them are recorded for the album is obscured so much that it actually takes away from the songs rather than enhancing their effect like it should.
