Hey everyone I have a newer version of this framing video on my more recent van build where I do things a little differently. Check out this video too for another option th-cam.com/video/3P_TEdmfNAs/w-d-xo.html
When you break it down like this even I can understand how to do it.. simply amazing!!
Thank you!
Best framing video I have seen yet. I think I could do this. Thanks for the inspiration.
Thanks for watching
Never saw furring strips put up like that on a van. You maximized the space in your van. Hmmm...got me thinking now. Good job.
Thank you
I would only do it the way he does if you will be in very mild climates. The metal framing of the van will create a thermal bridge between the outside and the inside with how he did it. You get a little extra space, but you lose insulation between the metal and the final wall of the van.
Dude you’re the man !!! So thankful you posted this !!
Please keep them coming ..
Thank you I was waiting for a video like this not sure about my fiberglass roof have not torn out inside yet so I don’t know what’s under there I guess I’ll figure it out when I get there
Easy to be me sitting here critiquing. It would be a good idea to use loctite blue on those brackets to the metal van structure. Vibration is our enemy. Still learning from your experience. Thanks for sharing.
Is someone able to explain why it’s necessary to add the wood battens at the very beginning to the metal “framing” - to then be able to screw the wood to wood? As in, the metal battens are already in place across the roof as part of the van structure - why can’t we just screw wood panelling directly into these bits of metal? Seeing as the screws wouldn’t go through the roof or anything. I just don’t understand the reasoning and no one mentions why in any videos. Can anyone let me know? Thank you!
I think he is trying to maximize room. It seems like a lot of work to save a very small amount of space but it’s his build.
i think you're right. Many youtubers are just doing what everyone else is. Your way would save space. There might be a smidge more heat transfer from the outside, but i doubt it
I’m also choosing not to put furring strips on my roof because I am 6’4 I need every inch of head space I can get. So I’m doing panels directly to the metal beams.
It's not necessary but makes the installation easier so you don't have to avoid the existing holes. I'm with you, though, since in my van I installed threaded inserts in the cross beams and used thin sheet material to maximize headroom. However, my ceiling vents have bezels that stick down a few inches, removing my carefully saved headroom!
Excellent video! Thanks for posting.
what do you do if you need to drill something into the metal structures that aunt covered in wood? I see some people frame on the outside and I think this makes it easier but it does take up some space. Thanks in advance!
Check out my more recent van that I framed that way. Here is a link to the video th-cam.com/video/3P_TEdmfNAs/w-d-xo.htmlsi=yrtCKmloe5QUBi99
Why did you decide to do it differently than this video? Thanks
@@lucyfergusson4070because it was more important to me to have uninterrupted walls than to have an extra inch or two here and there. When you see the finished product I end up with nice walls without bump outs
also because you do it that way, do you have to create bump outs for your bed?
@@BuildingVanLife
Nice video well explained I’m about to do my floor than framing i will update u on my project peace out
The way you did the wall framing is the right way this way you don't loose no inches side to side
Thank you. That was my intention so I could keep the bed width ways instead of length.
Great video! I noticed that you cut the vertical pieces of wood have a slight angle cut on the top and bottom. What angle was that? Thanks so much!
Can’t quite remember. I am pretty sure I mentioned in the video.
Great content!
I'm a new member and am happy to be one. I do not see any of the links to the materials you are recommending. I get the impression they should be showing up on my you tube, but they are not. How can I get a list of your materials? Regards.
If you expand the description in the bottom of the video you will see all the links
Thank you for posting
Question. Did you cut the bottom of the strips to match the where they set on the mid section?
Yes. I think I show that in the video. However I recommend watching my more recent van build and how I did the framing on that. I did it differently and I think it came out better. Here is the link th-cam.com/video/3P_TEdmfNAs/w-d-xo.htmlsi=uDS-ft2kr6M1MwSr
@@BuildingVanLife respect ✊🏾
Did you have LED lights on any of the ceiling support beams? I have a 2020 Promaster and it came with a string of LED lights that are wired into the van and go across 2 of the support beams. I am trying to find instructions from someone who has removed them.
Yes I’ve had them on some vans. You can just unplug them
So wouldn't you want to get some wiring behind those walls and insulation at one point?
Curious if you could do without stripping and tap walls into metal inside frame.
Wiring is done next after framing, then insulation after that.
What do you get those L brackets. Can’t find them anywhere, at least not on Amazon
I get them from Home Depot
Where did you find the brackets? Just at lowes or any big box store?
They are from Home Depot
thanks for sharing chief, helps us all out a lot... so are those metal roof beams just glued on? Just wondering if that's the case because they potentially need to support a lot of weight from cabinets etc.
No. They are structural. The glue is just connect the sheet metal of the roof to the structural beams. Also my cabinets are not connected to the ceiling. Only to the walls into the wood studs.
@@BuildingVanLife right, so those roof beams are just glued onto the roof sheet metal.... that's what I'm saying...
@@bikeninja956 it’s a structural frame. It’s holding all the sheet metal up. The glue is just there so the sheet metal doesn’t vibrate and rattle on top of the frame. The glue has nothing to do w the structure.
@@BuildingVanLife yeah, I see that now, those stamped cross beams actually wrap around down onto the walls..got it! thanks
Do u recommend to primer the furring-strips ? Just curious thanks
I don't think it's necessary.
Right on buddy keep doing what your doing your very inspiring
do you have a list of materials/tools you used specifically in this video for the wood frame? i noticed the description only has all of the items used for the entire build
the brackets, wood and the screws are from home depot so I don't have amazon links for those.
@@BuildingVanLife What is the name of the power drill you use? The drill ive been using is having trouble getting through the metal of the van, I dont think its powerful enough.
@@lukeelias5900 I use this impact driver. It's really powerful. I recommend it. amzn.to/3hDqs45 Also make sure you are using the self drilling screws I am using. You wont be able to get through the metal easily with regular screws.
Okay you have me baffled. Don’t you have to drill holes in the support beams first before mounting them to the wood because you can’t get those screws through that medal without putting holes in the medal first, right? I’m new to this. Thanks!
If you use the screws I show they are special screws. They are self drilling screws. They go right through the metal easily. You can get the screws from Home Depot. Thanks for watching
Okay thanks for the information. I believe you have the Promaster van. I have the high roof Ford transit van.
@@BuildingVanLife also, I’m talking about the support beams up top (roof beams).
@@rangerider51 same answer. Self drilling screws will go right through
@@rangerider51 also I have a more recent framing video on my current build that might be helpful. Here’s the link th-cam.com/video/mwEYPSGmnKU/w-d-xo.html
when you want to bend pine wood, makes some cuts along one side, it will then bend to your shape when screwed, bit late, but hey
Yes that’s what I did on the newer versions of this video on my channel.
Is the framing stable enough to mount e-track or L- track on to secure 1000lbs cargo?
Hmm. A 1000 lbs? Probably not, that seems extreme. I would try to secure that directly onto the frame of the van.
Where is your wiring loom gone?
Wiring is done after the framing
Funny...just put my ceiling up...did not noticed a difference in the beams
Couldn't you technically have done pocket holes instead of the brackets?
I think you would have a very hard time getting through the metal with the pocket holes
For every van conversion there is a different way of carrying it out.
Is that a transit?
no, it's a dodge promaster
Did you cut the headliner for the front piece?
No, i just placed the 1x3 right over it and screwed through it and into the ribs of the van. Worked out nicely.
@@BuildingVanLife Nice! I just cut my headliner since I felt like mine wouldn't match up otherwise
Chandler Short I think I just ripped the thickness of the headliner off the 1x3 on the table saw
Looks great - think we will try your technique for our project. What size L bracket did you use?
They were like one inch by 3 inch. They are from Home Depot
Why not just attach directly to the metal and span across?
I was trying to maximize the usable space in this van, but in my newer van I actually did what your'e describing. Here is a link to that video. th-cam.com/video/3P_TEdmfNAs/w-d-xo.html
Hmmm I don't know why you did not use rivets
Rivets work fine too. To me it seems like an unnecessary extra step. Plus they would only be able to be used for the ceiling furring strips in this set up.
@@BuildingVanLife Thanks for the tip
@@BuildingVanLifewhy can’t you use them on the brackets
Measurements?
I have a new video coming out next week on my most recent build, i'll be doing the framing a little differently in the new build.
Can you be hired for a project?!
A lot of people have asked. I’m not really interested at this time sorry. I just want to build my vans and sell them.
DUDE!!!! Y U NO STUFF INSULATION INSIDE RIBS??
Over built
