A Thermo incubator showed up in the HVAC/R lab one day, after having been scrapped because of a leaky evaporator and bad compressor. The evaporator proved tedious but ultimately fixable, while the compressor would have been a much more serious problem. I'd set aside some scrapped refrigeration decks, and one of those donated its compressor to the incubator.
Amazingly, it worked! The temperature control and stability on that thing, even running on what were probably badly mismatched parts, was incredible.

What was stored in these units? You got to be careful if chemicals stored in them. For special explosion-proof refrigerators they have to be labeled HFS and I saw the current 0/0/0 but keep those gloves on. As a former Chemist our lab units had nasties in them, God's sake keep those gloves on. Some chemicals go straight through skin and I saw some corrosion on the racks, a tell-tale sign. Under OSHA - no food allowed in a chemical refrigerator. I guess this could be a biology application.

Ricardo MAGARico Nothing worse then BSL 3 lab. Did all ultra low freezer -80c & W/I environment chambers . Even did the HVAC & containment machine room where all the water went down the drain they had to steam water before it went to the PH room .This even could of went to level 4 we had to certified the breathing equipment & maintenance never been used every year never been used.

@@hvacrnortheastern2110 The lowest temp ever saw other than liquid N2 was -40 C Methanol bath. Don't know what refrigerant was used. Kept in lab hood. -80 C mind bending.

Ricardo MAGARico Cascade refrigeration is different you must have good refrigeration practice there isn't any short cut -80 c which is -120 F degree.First stage is R404 & R134 second stage is R508B & propane for oil return one total rebuild takes 32 hours. Revco came out with Auto cascade -140. -150c which is -255F one scroll compressor with 6 different blend with CO 2 .If you don't have some experience with cascade it could cost you & company a lot of money due to the product store inside if not done right first time. All parts are OEM

Word to the wise substituting wholesale version compressors with -901 BOM's can get you in trouble when the -959 BOM's for thermo can possibly have different internal components and oils than their wholesale counterparts with the same model number. Certain Cascade and other comps. Are gauranteed to grenade with this path. You are probably good on that one though just a 134a system

I use to service a scientific supply company. They sold test kits to hospitals. They had to keep their coolers between 9°c and 1°c per government regulations. The customer complained that that was unreasonable until I explained restaurants have to keep coolers between 4°c and 1°c. So 9°c was nothing. I think I have those celcius numbers right, but I still perfer farenheit.

Since you here what would be the reason a bimetal thermal overload burns out? On 1/4 True GDM-10 cooler compressor. I tried switch thermal for a good one and they just spark and open the circuit. And even swap the relay & the thermal overload together just goes back to open. The thing that fixes is switching the compressor. Any thoughts? Also I check my ohms and check if the compressor is ground looks good but just thermal overload always goes open.
