Fun fact in the 1980s the Canadian Oberons were fitted with the MK48 torpedoes. So if you were using a maple syrup powered O-boat it would have been the true opposite of the Trafalgar. A very bad (for the time) submarine with a very good torpedo
This is the exact reason why when I play cold waters, I ditch the tigerfish for mk48s after the first few rearms. In an actual hot scenario they would have been ditched and any mk48s that could be acquired would have been.
I used to hunt Oberons (and Victor 3’s) in the 80’s. They were quieter than any nuc sub when on batteries and with the Mk48 they routinely embarrassed far more modern boats. With love, Ken
Whilst i am exceedingly pleased to see you playing Cold Waters again, I wouldn't wish the Oberon campaign on any but my worst enemy. Tricky, my bare, red, well spanked posterior. It ought to be labelled "Murder Mode" or "Suicide Squad. "
Great vid Dave, your cold waters content is the best on TH-cam and no matter how many time you watch them they never get boring. If your posting on more cold waters content then thanks a lot, if it's just the one special then thanks anyway all the same. My granddad was in the submarines.. he used to take my mother.. ..and my aunt who lives across the road from me aboard for visits when he came home to port, he used sail on the post war diesel subs and then later the Oberon class, used to have a great beard like out of Das Boot.. he also said that they had to eat mouldy bread at times but it was like having penicillin at the same time. Never went into action though which is a great thing, hate to think about the horrors of being in real combat against the soviets like this. Great stuff, keep them coming Dave 👍
Soviet Campaign: Sink a Nimitz class super carrier in a 1950s model diesel/electric Me:😢 On another note, I can't wait for Sea Power to come out. Hope they have British and German Tornado's with Sea Eagles.
I empathize, Dave. I've also had a really bad bout of flu, since the 4th - knocked me out for two days straight and spent nearly two weeks sick. It's coming to an end just now, actually. Cheers, mate. Hope you fully recover soon.
Torpedo Evasion Strategy for NATO Submarines: Get deep, get fast, spam knuckles. Torpedo Evasion Strategy for Oberon Class Submarine: GET TO ESCAPE DEPTH BEFORE THE TORPEDO HITS YOU! 😂
This submarine really, REALLY debilitates the British campaign and makes it unplayable. The Oberon is useless, it's noisy, it's deaf (if a Vic3 is being silent, you're *never* going to detect it, and you'll be facing Vic3s right from the start), it's slow, it's torpedoes are slow af, it's actually impossible to beat missions with more than one target. The only way you can sink anything with the Oberon is to catch it by surprise and torp it from the baffles. Good luck surprising more than one target. As soon as anything knows a torp is in the water, they run away and EVERYTHING outruns the Oberon's wired torps... And in the British campaign, you can't upgrade to a better boat without prestige, which you only get from winning missions... You can't just start with an even marginally better boat... This submarine belongs in the 1963 campaign... But here it is as the starting boat in a 1984 campaign... Just why devs?!
Glad you're back. I only just found your content this month, and was wondering why you'd disappeared. Fortunately, between YT and Twitch, there is quite a back catalogue of entertainment at my perusal. May your further recovery be swift.
On my first mission from my first campaign I played with the Oberon and I got obliterated. The task was to sink enemy tankers and they told me that they might be escorted. But they didn't tell me there were 5 escorts protecting just 1 tanker.
Ah, 2am, the perfect time to sit back in bed and listen to Dave attempt to sink the Russian fleet with a leaky tub and the worst torpedos possible. Get well soon Dave!
I do love the difference between the commentary on this from the Trafalgar campaign. One's all serious and immersive as you would be in real life. This one on the otherhand, dosed up on flu medication....Ahhh f**k it, we're in a crap boat with crap gear, come at me bro! Chicks dig scars, live fast die young and leave a good looking corpse 🤣🤣🤣
There is nothing more annoying in Cold Waters (or the original Hunt for Red October) where it dropped you into the mission within sensor range of the other ships and you immediately get shot at!
@@majorborngusfluunduch8694- It was indeed, that's what I meant. I always mix up the two, don't know why really, apart from the fact I love both books!
There isn't really much in between unfortunately. I guess it could add some European boats but the main problem is that the RN operated just the Oberons, Valiants, Churchills, Swiftsures and Trafalgars in this period. Nothing in between.
Hi Dave good video. As regards the towed array, if you use the still camera and let the boat pass the array does actually end. The early versions of the mod had very short array. The one modelled now is about the correct length.
Just wanted to say Dave, I’ve got some pretty severe anger issues, and not much can cool me down, but your videos always do. I love your style, and that voice is angelic. Keep at it bro.
If they let you use a Canadian or Australian Oberon, you could get Mk 48s, and the Aussie one even had Harpoons. On the other hand, it could also be worse. There were still four Porpoises in service at the time of the 1984 campaign. Dotmod devs I dare you to add that I felt 13:18. Oh, you sunk a Sierra in a Skipjack? Had a Vodopad miss you by inches while you completely fumbled the evasion? Well done, but that wasn't the specific sub we wanted you to kill. As for your accidental surface, surfacing can actually be a good way to lose a lot of torpedoes. SET-whatever can't track surface targets, USET-80 may only be able to track them if launched in shallow mode, original TEST-71 wire breaks if it goes too close to the surface and may not be able to track surfaced targets. All missile torpedoes are also unable to track a surface vessel. The Soviet ASW/ASuW split is a massive blind spot and very exploitable as long as there are no surface/air units around. The USET-80 that sank you may have been launched in shallow mode, or maybe I need to test my theory more. Keep your torpedoes passive against anything in the Victor series, they are all anechoic. Tango as well.
"He's about ten seconds away from slamming the active sonar button like the 'Like' button on TH-cam." Haha, clever plug, Dave, but it'll take more than- *PING* *click*
Just wondering if going the Steam route is the best bet to get this? GOG doesn't seem to update versions. I know the devs have stopped working on the game altogether though.
I was glad I caught this one live, you had so many "unfortunate" events relating to Russian torps ignoring everything you did to shake them off that it was getting painful to watch. I can't help but wonder if they've set those torps to be a little too "tenacious" to be realistic?
IRL even at the end of their life late 80s/early 90s the oberons were more capable in terms of stealth than anything else. gimmicks during their refits allowed them to operate in the gulf war and outperform modern equipment in many places they shouldn't have been including stalking russian subs.
I love the idea of the prestige system but my god does the high expense of the next upgrade and the difficulty of the missions make it near a pointless game mode. Gutting really.
"Captain Blyatsky would you care to explain how an Oberon found and tracked you for miles without you noiticing?"
"The towed array is in Brazil sir"
"Did you mean 'Off the coast of Brazil'?"
"No..."
"DO IT FOR HER" but it's all pictures of Margaret Thatcher
I demand a supercut of all the coughing and sneezing from this stream

So were the Australian ones.
love your commentary, a type of british sass i never knew i needed lol
"there you go, enjoy comrades" as the torpedo pops the sub
I can't believe it!!!! More Cold Waters!!! Thank you!!!!!
The o boats was a very useful boat in the 70-80s against the Russians, the way the RN Captains operated them was second to none.
I used to hunt Oberons (and Victor 3’s) in the 80’s. They were quieter than any nuc sub when on batteries and with the Mk48 they routinely embarrassed far more modern boats. With love, Ken
Run an Australian Oberon. They had Mk 48s and the MicroPUFFS side mounted ranging sonar.
Not gonna lie, I'm torn between "Yay, Cold Waters!" and "Dave, you're ill. Go to bed, you fool!"
Absolute madman fights an Alfa in a diesel rustbucket, begins fight by announcing his location to the entire North Sea and *wins*.
I love how the music started to get good when you were complimenting the Victor then it just stopped when you switched back to the onyx
Whilst i am exceedingly pleased to see you playing Cold Waters again, I wouldn't wish the Oberon campaign on any but my worst enemy.

The thumbnail made me think it was a video of a naval mil-hist channel I watch from time to time... Good to see you and this game back, Dave.

I have high hopes for Sea Power, whenever it eventually releases!
Who is releasing Sea Power...?
Always great to trust your life in a sub that looks like a child's bath toy.

The whole stream was one of the funniest I've seen for a while! Bloody great entertainment!
This whole run was the epitome of "hydrogen bomb vs coughing baby"
About time I’ve been dying for more cold waters videos 😢
Glad you're back. I only just found your content this month, and was wondering why you'd disappeared. Fortunately, between YT and Twitch, there is quite a back catalogue of entertainment at my perusal. May your further recovery be swift.
I was thoroughly entertained by this! But man... i can't imagine what the stream would have been lol
Got excited seeing this! Was going to watch something else over lunch but couldn’t resist!!!

glad you're feeling some better, glad to have you back.
My wife and I watched a lot of this stream, it was indeed suffering lol
Glad to see you back Dave! ❤

The OG game was Red Storm Rising.

the mod really needs something between the o class and the nuke subs. or to lower the prestige needed for the churchill so its actually playable
There isn't really much in between unfortunately. I guess it could add some European boats but the main problem is that the RN operated just the Oberons, Valiants, Churchills, Swiftsures and Trafalgars in this period. Nothing in between.

I might have to go watch the twitch vod of this. Something to have in the corner while murdererizing things in Minecraft.
Get well soon, Dave.
Starting off with a victor 3 on the surface 😂
Awesome stuff! Will there be More Galatia? Really looking forward to that.
Love the Commander's name!
Hey, great video, i want to know how do you change the tactical map with that specifications.
I hate this submarine, on every damn level

Its hilarious how he shit talks his own nations subs and torpedoes
Reminds me I need to actually finish my 2 dotmod campaigns. Got scorched by a dotmod dev and I kinda gave up.
I remember trying this game myself and starting with this campaign, thinking I was just horrible or something...
Just wondering if going the Steam route is the best bet to get this? GOG doesn't seem to update versions. I know the devs have stopped working on the game altogether though.
id rather take a vintage whisky over this tub of bolts and pain

More please.

Too heavily cut. We're here for Collin's stories, not some sub shingnass. :P
Wait, I'm not sure about this... Is it a nasty or NASTY illness? Sorry, I couldn't resist... 😅
Oh hell yes
Cold Waters?
Surely You mean 'Flu Waters'. 😊
you are crazy for sure....

I have it to we’re Soviet subs surface for no reason
hi everyone from twitch chat
I see through your plan, they cant give u oberon if u sink them all :)
😘
