Dave... you mentioned about being careful not to put too many layers of color on top of each other due to diminishing "tooth" of the paper.
I remember back when I was much younger (about 25 years now) I was endeavouring to paint with soft pastels, and I can remember the more colors I tryed to use over each other, the muddier and slippery it got.
    * Well I got this bright idea to SPRAY MIST my painting ever so lightly with a spray bottle of clean water...
    WALLA... IT WORKED!!
I was then able to paint right OVER that area AGAIN with ANOTHER color!!
    * It didn't matter if it was THEN wet or dry... I could just keep painting WITH OUT getting agravated and discouraged.
    HAPPY PAINTING!! 😊😁😇

I have enjoyed watching all of your videos. They are helping me an awful lot. I have a question about your pastel pencil portraits. Have you used Claire Fontaine Pastelmat sanded paper?
Once you’re finished do you use any fixative as a final protective layer? If you do would you mind giving a suggestion on what you use. And if you don’t fix your artwork, could you explain why? Thank you so much for putting so much work and energy into your videos. I appreciate it. Thank you and cheers. 👍😀✏️✏️✏️

Hi Ray... thanks for watching my video... Pastelmat is my preferred surface to use. I don't fix my work for two reasons. 1st... Pastelmat grabs the pigment so less chance of smudging. 2nd... fixing your work can dull the subties too much. I protect my work before framing by wrapping it with Glassine paper. All the best
      Dave

Thank you kindly for your response. That’s the same method I use so now I feel better. Using a final fixative always seems to dull and muddy the pastel. I prefer using glassine to protect the artwork until it is framed. I use two mats, the one next to the artwork has a larger opening and acts as a spacer keeping the outer mat with a smaller opening away from the art creating a channel that can allow pastel dust to drop down behind the front mat keeping the front mat relatively clean. Looking forward to your next video. Cheers and thank you.

... as I was just telling Dave about my younger experiences with soft pastels and how they tend to MUDDY and become too slippery. Just use a spray bottle of clean water AS A FIXITIVE.
It THEN does not matter if it's still wet OR dry, you are then able to work OVER that area as you please. 😁

Thank you Betty for the tip. I think I will test out spraying with water. It’s an interesting idea. Cheers.

I know what you mean... there is a lot of artists using projectors these days, they are not for me... somehow it doesn't feel right and you can't really say you have created it only coloured it in. 🙏

Thanks David sorting well I figured out this tablet now instead of 1 minute it gives me 30 minutes before the screen goes blank and yes I am my own teacher because in my heart I believe I am going to be a professional portrait artist
