Hey guys! Please remember to keep in mind this is not a recommendation for anyone of how to proceed after a covid infection; each individuals case is different afterall. This video is simply a documentation of my experience that i hope can be helpful to anyone that gets covid in the future and faces similar concerns as i did about being able to get back out and ride.
Alex, I'm a medical student and I think you really should see a doctor about that "circle red rash", you did not show it on video so I can't be 100% sure if it is what I think it is, but this sort of thing can be the first symptom of Lyme disease that you could get from a tick. Having COVID theoretically could have aggrevated your immune system and made this rash visible. All the best, I hope you see this comment!
I'm 3 rides after covid. I had a non normal covid infection. It affected primarily my heart and intestines. I never had a cough or respiratory issues. But I went 3 days of 140bpm-170bpm sitting on the couch at my early stages of infection. I had to take 6 weeks off after recovery to let my heart rest. Had ekg and other tests done. I Still have a minor tachycardia but Dr days it'll go away completely in 2-3 months (now 2 months completed post infection) That first trail ride after getting the clear to start excercise again was nerve-racking. But I'm glad I did it. I did about 2 weeks of neighborhood pedaling to try and get my fitness back prior to going out on the trail again. I agree, everyone is different and should consult their Dr after infection for the best guidance personalized to them and their specific conditions
@@The_Sampler , +1 to the Lyme disease risk. That's not something to mess around with. My COVID vaccine got rid of a skin infection I had---the immune system is amazing, but there are some real diseases out there which will knock you down. Congrats on the ride---looks like you're over COVID, but take care. P.S. You're always welcome in Moab. :) Visit if you want to get in a ride, go Jeeping, or whatever! :)
In case anyone's wondering, the route Alex & John took is RED ROCKS TRAIL > MORRISON SLIDE TRAIL (up from the north side and down on the south side) > RED ROCKS TRAIL > VILLAGE RIDE TRAIL > DAKOTA RIDGE TRAIL (old section) > DAKOTA RIDGE TRAIL (new section). It's a great ride that's a 20-minute drive west of downtown Denver.
Thanks John, I was wondering what trails those were, I visit that area all the time (was surprised when I saw Bandimere Speedway). Might have to bring the bike next time.
I went out 7 days after - I hadn't really had a lot of coughing or breathing issues (I thought) except at night- and it was way too soon. I collapsed about 5 k in and had to carry most of the way back. Still have the night coughs and trouble breathing while active but I can't imagine it'll improve by not getting out there. Great looking ride, thanks for sharing!
You are recovering way better than I did. After I had the "sickness" I couldn't even walk 50 feet without being winded and out of breath and covered in sweat. It's been 2 years since I had it and I am still trying to get my body in the shape it was in before that stupid illness wrecked my body.
when i had covid i had delta , before vaccines were avaialble to me in my country . 2 weeks of bed rest and the day after being tested negative i went for a haricut and walked home , 2 kilometers , the soreness i had for the next few days were similar to when i ran a 10km with hardly any training prior . ontop of this i wasnt eating very well , too little calories and micronutrient deficiencies so i was already in poor health when i got the rona . worst long term effect for me was loss of smell , i still dont think my smell has fully recovered , it took me a while to recover from malnourishment and starting to gain weight again and hitting the gym to keep me strong thanks for the content alex 💚
After this year with your issues, I'm sure you're looking forward to a better 2023. All the good is in front of you. Can't wait to see vids with you and Brian.... Love it when you guys get together!!!
I had congestion for 2 weeks after I tested positive for Covid. It took me about two months to get my conditioning back to pre-Covid levels even though I was sick for a week. I couldn’t ride for about 3 weeks total and my lung capacity felt diminished even after everything passed. And the actual sickness was just like a bad cold. Don’t be fooled people, even if it doesn’t seem “that bad,” this thing can still kick your ass for weeks after. Maybe you’ll be one of the lucky ones. But don’t take it lightly if you do get it. Let’s all be safe out there and enjoy riding.
I think it's great that you are sharing your experience!! Everyone's experience is going to be different. I had Covid last January, but virtually no symptoms, so I was able to just keep riding (by myself, of course!). My husband had it at the same time, and it nearly killed him. Both of us are fully vaccinated, but responded to the virus very differently. I think that is the key. Just realize that everyone's experience is going to be different (even in terms of vaccinated and not vaccinated), and to respect that we are all going to make the best choices we are capable of!
After Covid, I tried for a few months to get back to normal. I eventually got impatient and bought an eBike. Now I’m back to 3-4 rides a week. Hopefully back on regular bike in the spring.
I had a really rough and frustrating time getting back after COVID. It knocked me out for multiple months and my recovery was incredibly slow. So slow that I was asking myself "am I crazy, is this all in my head?" and all the other self-questioning type things that someone accustomed to quick progression might feel when faced with extremely slow or seemingly nonexistent progression.... and sometimes regression (getting more and more fatigued with each ride, rather than improving). Long winded way of sharing my experience and commiserating with your experience. I'm glad your recovery has been a success. Stay stoked.
For me it took a little more than a month after getting over COVID-19 to start feeling normal on the bike again. It was weird. I would feel fine in the morning. Absolutely fine. I would go to the gym but would end up sweating during my warm-ups and only after 30 minutes maybe my hands would shake and I'd get a little dizzy. Mind you I'm hydrated and had a good meal prior. Same situation on the bike. I'd feel out of breath only after like 3 - 4 miles. Literally thought I had "long" covid. Thankfully I didn't and I'm back to where I was before covid. Covid flat out sucks big time.
Glad to hear you are doing well. I went through Covid back in mid August, and it wasn’t until mid September before I finally felt 100% again. Never had breathing issues. I had leg weakness and low stamina, the first week or two of riding my heart rate was elevated too. And my HRV really dipped down. I never paid much attention to my Garmin watch reporting on HRV, but I’ve since learned it is a very good indicator for how your body is doing. My HRV levels returned to normal at the same time my rides started to feel normal again. I think we can all agree, Covid sucks. I feel bad for those suffering from long term symptoms, I know I was really bummed during the month or so I was impacted by it and couldn’t enjoy a sport I love.
I had a very bad case Christmas 2020, couldn’t work for a whole month after. Turned out to be long covid, had a cough for 6 months , short of breath and brain fog. Took me almost an entire year to even get back to my riding condition. If I even slightly over exerted myself my chest was on fire, and couldn’t catch my breath and felt burning for days. Luckily I didn’t get scarring on my lungs, one of the happiest moments of my life was realizing one day I was getting better and the effects weren’t going to be permanent.
I had Covid 5 weeks ago. I was down for the count for 2 weeks. Immediately jumped back in to tough Western CO mtb'ing and was good to go. Same thing - post-ride hangovers were bad, but I was away from CO for a few months, may have been readjusting to elevation and strenuous workout
I'm recovering from covid myself and all I have to say after watching this is; YOLO Alex. I'm going for my first big ride on Saturday in the beautiful 67 degree Florida weather and I'm so stoked.
Recovery takes time but keep working toward it! Rest is great but at some point, sitting around isn't helping! Glad to see you getting out there! Also, my wife and I loved Salida and have been back multiple times, from Michigan. We would have likely never stopped in if not for your channel so thank you!
The weak feeling is definitely aftermath of covid. I did it. Took a couple months to get my system back feeling more normal. Be patient, it'll come back.
Your personal, over dramatic, talking to yourself while you ride is a pleasure to listen too. What you say to yourself, but out loud, is what makes you a content creator. If it was me, it would be a video of me deep breathing, cursing, and deep breathing some more. Stay motivated and keep living your life.
Dude I'm so stoked for Redemption 2022!!!! 🔥I literally just moved to Colorado after summer from the midwest, enjoying every second on my hardtail so far. You guys are reason I'm mountain biking!!!
Hope you enjoy your time in Colorado the weather has been awesome for mtb this fall. Glad you are feeling better I had a mild case of Covid a year ago and I had a ton of problems with my lungs afterwords, so happy you are recovering well.
I had cv19 earlier 2021, slight fever for a short bit with a nagging cough. 5 days after testing positive I was sick of isolation and went for a ride, I was winded, but felt great otherwise. When I got home I took a very hot, steamy shower and began hacking up what looked like white foam, literally. I quit coughing shortly after my shower and felt better than I did since the onset of the initial symptoms, so I went back out the next day and repeated the same loop and hot shower routine, same coughing fit, but less stuff came up. After that second ride, I was literally 100% and went out and rode a longer, harder ride and no breathing issues or cough. I am a firm believer that the fitter and healthier you are, the quicker you'll recover from almost any illness
Bro, so glad you got the milder end of COVID. My first ride after I had COVID was brutal. There were some punchy 10-15% grade climbs and I was huffing super hard and it took me a while to recover after each one. Definitely doing way better now (after doing some training), but the first 5-10 rides had me super demoralized because I couldn't complete climbs I had done easily before.
Hey Alex, I'm in the same boat as you. Had COVID for the first time 3 weeks ago. The first weekend after I had it, I would break out in a sweat just doing mild exercise, so I eased off for a week. After that I was wind surfing and mountain biking over Halloween at lake Garda in Italy and was also happy that I felt so good. I enjoy your videos.. here's to a 100% recovery!
I rode after Covid here and Florida and I felt perfectly fine. I went snowboarding in Breckenridge Colorado when I was in peak shape last year and I got out of breathe walking up a small flight of stairs. That thin air got me! Lol
After I got Covid, I went for a ride. The same climb I do 5+ times a week took 2x long and I had to stop 4-5 times. It felt like sprinting in really cold weather... that burning lung/throat sensation. Completely out of breath... took about 2+ weeks to come back to normal :O So it was tough on me, but got out of it. All my friends were telling me to not exercise and take it easy.... but I live next to mountains. There is no "easy" here other than taking the e-bike. Which I definitely rode more until I completely recovered.
BTW, love or hate e-bikes..... taking the e-bike after Covid was really a big help to get back into shape. It is a milder cardio that really helps when you are still sick/recovering. Just my 2c ...
I just want to say it’s great to see Alex back in the saddle. I was watching your videos back in 2017 and you inspired me to invest in a bike. Best decision ever and life changing at that. Cheers to the Sampler and continued success to you brother 🤙
Great video! First ride for me 10 days post covid today. Seemed like way more fatigue than I would have expected after 10 days off the bike but hey I was back on the bike and that’s all good
I tested for it back in Sept and while it didn't hit me very hard, I was off the bikes for a couple of weeks. For better or worse, I have some nice and easy road loops I can do from my house, which helped with gauging my recovery. I might have had it back in July, but the only symptom I had was exhaustion, which I attributed to being out of shape, so I never tested for it. But from what some others I have experienced, it might have been it. Regardless of what anyone thinks about it, getting it and then having symptoms isn't fun.
Damn this triggered PTSD for me 😂 I got Covid mid May 2020 and started feeling better enough by early July 2020 so I went on a tough long ride. The next day I was bed ridden and I developed waves of long Covid symptoms for the next two years until basically early this year.
No judgement. Just glad your feeling better. Glad your out doing what you enjoy. What I realize as a paramedic in NY, life is short. You can go @ a moments notice for any number of reasons. Enjoy life. Get well and feel better
Brother , COVID , no COVID, good job getting out and go always at your own pace and comfort zone. For COVID, I felt dead tired and just drained but not sure if it was a part of the emotional/mental manipulation of COVID. Always though, however you are feeling, honor yourself and trust your ability to make decisions regarding your temple and stasis
So stoked that you have made a full recovery...and that you're going to ride with Brian! You guys have great chemistry and it's obvious you have fun together. Please get that rash checked; could be Lyme-related with as much time as you/we are outside.
Great to see you better Alex! Everyone is different and will bounce back on an individual basis so the best advice for people is to take it as it comes and if you feel fine then great and if you need more time then take it😎
Good to see you on the other side of it! Covid for sure wrecked me when I got it. First two days were the worst but then it just dragged for 12 days. First gravel ride a week after testing negative was good but I could tell I lost a lot of strength that I still need to get back.
I got Covid for the second time three weeks before a 50 mile race I had on the calendar. Luckily it didn’t affect me too bad, and I could still do my race. Glad you’re on the mend on back on the bike!
Hi Alex, thanks very much for putting up this video. I have been lucky enough to avoid covid so far but know it's just a matter of time until I do. I hear/read a lot about people having lasting effects with breathing so as an avid mountain biker watching your vid has helped keep things in perspective. Looking forward to the redemption '22 series with Brian.
My wife has asthma. She was having trouble with coughing a month out. She eventually decided to get back on the bike and just take it easy. About a weeks worth of riding and she was much better.
When I got COVID my lungs were fine, but the I suffered for months with severe muscle soreness and fatigue in my lower back and hamstrings. I push through it, but it was miserable.
I can totally relate with many of your sentiments in the video, especially “good for my soul” I had Covid a couple months ago, and my first ride back was rough - I had to cut it short. My 2nd ride back was fine. It felt great. It was definitely good for my soul.
I was personally left with 2 weeks to get back in shape after COVID for a charity century gravel ride I had signed up for. I had to ease my way back the first few days, but got my regular fitness back fairly quickly. I know everyone reacts differently to illness, though. First real ride back was admittedly not the greatest.
I run and hit the ground again 1 week post covid with a cold and rainy 7 mile train run with crazy elevation gain. Do not recommend that haha my lungs hurt after that but now I’m about 3 weeks post covid and doing great. I’m glad you’re getting back out there too! I enjoy your videos even though I don’t mountain bike. Thanks for sharing them 😊
Jumping over an RC car, that's a new one.😄 The best way, in my opinion, on how to get over being sick quickly, ride your damn bike. Looking strong Sampler.
good on you man! You killed that! The focus on the check in, face centred shots was a little much, but overall love it thank you for all the entertainment!!!
My first round of COVID took months to feel back to normal after my symptoms were gone. It was awful and felt like someone was sitting on my chest. My second round of COVID took only about a week after symptoms were gone and felt like you would after any cold getting back in the saddle.
Yup, took me about 6 months to get even close to my prior fitness. COVID is a strange thing that affects people in many different ways and at different levels.
Wish I could have run into you. The hogback (2nd part of the ride) is like 15 minutes from my house. You'll have to stop back again and do the back half of the south hogback. There's more to be had!
Front range Colorado trails are exactly why I bought an E-bike. Never seems to be enough fun and fast down to go with the pedaling up. Screw it, now every part of every trail is fast and fun!
I had the covid in September and did a roughly 340mi bike tour a few weeks later. Only had a few days of "long" rides leading up to it because I was anxious about how my body would handle it. I ended up being okay, but I think I am lucky.
Hey - so now that you’ve had the Fezzari for a while and ridden on lots of different terrain. Could you do a short review on what is working. What you like. Potential improvements?
Both my Dad and Brother (runners) have had drops in their VO2 max (calculated by apple watch) for maybe two weeks after clearing the virus. This seems to match up with many other people's claims.
Welcome to Colorado! This is great info. my biggest fear about getting covid is that it could potentially impact my passions like skiing and biking. I'm still a covid 19 (symptomatic) virgin and hoping to stay that way. you should do a 20 day follow-up too because healing is a process. I'm guessing you'll be hitting Maryland mountain next?
Obviously I'm a group of one, but a skier/snowboarder, mountain biker and climber. Had Covid despite vaccinations and normal due care, fulltime WFH, etc. No long lasting effects. I guess my take is to maximize your health with natural foods, good sleep, being outside, being fit, having a good stress reduction toolkit. Those are things you can control, so focus on that and not on the things you can't.
I had covid, no vax iv got high blood pressure and a Diabetic, i take care of my issues thur biking and diet, and i had covid with no issues getting back on the bike , don't let fear push u in to a something that isn't proven to be effective
@@TheLeesto that wasn't to be Rude id hope u would do what u want, just like to encourage people to not make a decision based on fear and emotions, but we are all subject to learn our on way no big deal
I had booked a trip to Moab for March 2020 back in September 2019. I got Covid mid February 2020 and tested negative 2 days prior to my trip so I wound up doing Slick Rock as my first ride after Covid. Let me tell you I thought I was going to die by the end of it. But I made it and after that ride I had no problems riding the next 10 days of my trip.
Having ridden Slickrock myself, you feel like you're going to die at the end when riding Slickrock when 100% healthy too, that's just the nature of that trail haha
I didn't really have a hard time with covid after getting it for the first time a few weeks back. It was more cold/flu symptoms. I got very lucky in that regard, but it was my sense of taste and smell that got hit. Food was tasting like rotten eggs and coffee was like inhaling gas from the stove. It was disgusting to breathe after eating or drinking. That's what I really don't want to happen again.

So it was tough on me, but got out of it.
You’re such a pro making videos. Great to see you doing well. Cheers bro
I had a cough that lasted for a few months. Nice to see someone I respect showing a neutral option on their recovery. Great video btw.
Hell yeah Alex! Glad you're doing better and cant wait to see the upcoming ride footage!
Great video!
First ride for me 10 days post covid today. Seemed like way more fatigue than I would have expected after 10 days off the bike but hey I was back on the bike and that’s all good
Man so proud ur back looking forward to more
I tested for it back in Sept and while it didn't hit me very hard, I was off the bikes for a couple of weeks.
Glad you’re on the mend and enjoying our beautiful fall weather!
Damn this triggered PTSD for me 😂 I got Covid mid May 2020 and started feeling better enough by early July 2020 so I went on a tough long ride. The next day I was bed ridden and I developed waves of long Covid symptoms for the next two years until basically early this year.
Hope you feel better bro! Love to see you ride w Brian.
No judgement. Just glad your feeling better. Glad your out doing what you enjoy. What I realize as a paramedic in NY, life is short. You can go @ a moments notice for any number of reasons. Enjoy life. Get well and feel better
Caught myself looking at the views in this video alot lol glad you're feeling good man 🙌
Brother , COVID , no COVID, good job getting out and go always at your own pace and comfort zone. For COVID, I felt dead tired and just drained but not sure if it was a part of the emotional/mental manipulation of COVID. Always though, however you are feeling, honor yourself and trust your ability to make decisions regarding your temple and stasis
Nice one Alex, just take it easy mate your fitness comes back alot faster if you having fun mate, stoked to the max as ever!
So stoked that you have made a full recovery...and that you're going to ride with Brian! You guys have great chemistry and it's obvious you have fun together. Please get that rash checked; could be Lyme-related with as much time as you/we are outside.
Good to hear you are over it a back riding fully 👊 ... cant wait for your rides with Brian
Just take it easy to not stress the heart too much
Great to see you better Alex!
Been hoping for a Redemption series soon! Glad you’re feeling better.
John went beast mode on that climb. Brian would eat that stuff up too.
Take it slow Alex.....it took me a long time to fully recover, probably 3 - 4 months. Looking forward watching your new redemption series.
Glad you're feeling better and that ride looks so sweet! Thanks for the vid man!
When I got COVID my lungs were fine, but the I suffered for months with severe muscle soreness and fatigue in my lower back and hamstrings. I push through it, but it was miserable.
Very Cool...can't wait to see you & Brian shreddin' again...have fun and be safe dude.
I can totally relate with many of your sentiments in the video, especially “good for my soul”
I had Covid a couple months ago, and my first ride back was rough - I had to cut it short.
Good to see you riding again and filming. Keep enjoying the ride!!
Thanks for sharing them 😊
Love the redemption series with BKXC, looklng forward to it! 😁
Glad you are feeling good after COVID. Cant wait to see your next videos
Great video, good to see you back at it. The bottom line either you are living or you are dead. Keep on living.
Super stoked for Redemption CO!!!🤘
Jumping over an RC car, that's a new one.😄
The best way, in my opinion, on how to get over being sick quickly, ride your damn bike. Looking strong Sampler.
Awesome! Excited for the redemption road-trip. You and Brian make great videos together.
good on you man! You killed that!
The focus on the check in, face centred shots was a little much, but overall love it thank you for all the entertainment!!!
Stoked for Redemption CO. Now we just need New England Sampler II with Phil 😀
Hope you did Floyd Hill and Maryland Mountain while you were here.
My first round of COVID took months to feel back to normal after my symptoms were gone. It was awful and felt like someone was sitting on my chest. My second round of COVID took only about a week after symptoms were gone and felt like you would after any cold getting back in the saddle.
Very Cool! Glad you are back healthy again!
Good to see you back.
Yeah boys! Can’t wait
Yup, took me about 6 months to get even close to my prior fitness. COVID is a strange thing that affects people in many different ways and at different levels.
Always love to see you on my local trails! Check out floyd hill and maryland mountain in blackhawk
Little scraggy and buf creak is still one of my favorite trails so fun!
Glad to hear you're on the mend. Also, I really need to get back out to Colorado sometime.
one of my favorite front range rides. Man, i miss Colorado
Take it easy and stoked!
glad you posted on this, everyone is ready to get on with their lives from the covid public health debacle
Good for you Alex. Glad you are doing ok. "Good for the soul"...ain't that the truth!
Stoked for you!
Just be careful with your heart
Stoked!!
Stoked for a redemption road trip!!
Awesome, glad you are feeling better and can't wait to see you and Brian's redemption ride!
@@lastname1386 I'll do as I please
@@TheLeesto that wasn't to be Rude id hope u would do what u want, just like to encourage people to not make a decision based on fear and emotions, but we are all subject to learn our on way no big deal
So stoked for Redemption CO!! I live in Grand Junction so if you guys need any guides or shuttles out here hit me up, I'd be glad to do it!
The red circle mark in my chest is because of coresampling when landing on my handlebar
😂😂 that’s gnarly dude!!
Redemption baby!
Since having covid I haven't been able to get my fitness back, I can still ride but not the capacity I used to.
