    Words can not describe how amazing this video is and how perfectly this worked! I had to get my timing belt changed on my 2007 Audi A4. I went to the dealership and to a private garage to get quotes. Both gave me quotes of just over $5,000.00. Oh yes, $5k!!!! There was no way on God's Green Earth I was going to give these people $5k to change a $40 belt (not including water pump, etc.). So, I found this video and decided, screw it! let me give this sucker a try. I am here to tell you, not only did this go perfectly, but it saved me literally thousands of dollars!!! It took me 3 weekends to do it, but I did it! LOL!!! Honestly, I can not describe how grateful I am to 1A Auto, you guys are freaking amazing!!!!!!! The first place I look for parts is with you guys, and I will moving forward. I'm an Audi nut, I've had over 5 Audi's and LOVE the car. I realized I had to do the work myself because there was no way I was paying over $200/hr. for labor. Again, thank you thank you thank you!!!!! Before I go to bed I as I'm saying my prayers I thank everyone at 1A Auto and wish you all the absolute best, you all are amazing!!! FANTASTIC video!!!! Literally I followed the video and from the first bolt to the last it went perfectly!!! WOW!!!! I'm a MASSIVE Fan of 1A Auto!!!!

    I think this is one of the best videos on technical breakdown I've seen. Thank you!! I am curious about pulling the coils and plugs, then you can really feel the engine as you turn it over, without competition of compression requiring a lot of force.. I also replace plugs at timing belt, as with multiple other aspects of updating an engine's maintenance, hoses, sensors etc. My shop teacher said.. Think of related things to do while you're in there.. Do you recommend pulling the coils/plugs on this application for hand cranking? Also.. What have people been paying shops to do this, what is shop spec on labor?? How many laymen hours are you guys seeing on your home repairs? What all items are you replacing while you're in there??

    Awesome. Very detailed video. In fact, even "My Grandma" could easily do this. I did this in half of day, taking my time. In my case, Audi A Quattro 2007 US model with 90k miles, the pipe running in front of the belt cover was made out of metal instead of plastic. I had a hard time loosing it up becasue the rubber was stuck to the metal. Nonetheless, using the 90 degree pick I and spraying wd40 I was able to loosing it up without any damage. Other than that, the video is very straight forward. It is important to use the right tools mentioned at the beginning of the presentation.
    THANK YOU GUYS...

    Very nice step by step video. When the car was running I think I heard the infamous Audi tensioner noise. You should do a video on replacing the camshaft timing chain and tensioner. I had to do that repair on my ‘05.5 A4 without any guidance beyond a shop manual.

    Great video. My wife was quoted $2000! For this maintenance I went to speak with the mechanic, who obviously remembers the car and become quite aggressive when I asked for a quote LOL. ''We don't do Audi's, it requires SPECIAL TOOLING I'M NOT PREPARED TO PURCHASE''. He said. He went on about his 25 years experience. OMG. Maybe he should watch this haha. Excellent video.

    Thanks so much for the help. The only difficulty I ran into was the crankshaft bolt, which is called out as 12pt in the video but I missed it. Since it is only needed to turn the engine over I just gently used a 21mm hex which gripped enough. Also despite much effort I couldn't get the radiator drain to function. Instead I removed the hose from the radiator, which turned out to be quite easy and not as messy as I had expected.

    CAUTION: There are difference between the US and European version of the car, especially in the cooling-system! In the EU version, there is no coolant-drain. The valve shown at 6:35 will cut the whole system - so make sure it is open before starting the engine... (it has to point in the direction of flow). To drain the coolant itself, you have to open the connectors to the radiator by lifting the metal bars up an unplugging the hoses. Furthermore, there are connectors for the headlight washing-system to be disconnected before removing the bumper in the EU-model. The rest of the Video is perfectly the same- thanks for uploading!

    I'm not an expert but, shouldn't one hook up the belt on the water pump side first then camshaft so that the slack is on the tensioner side?

  • @darluthier
    @darluthier 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Brilliant video! Best I've seen so far. This is very similar to my A4 B6 convertible 1.8T Sport. I usually use a little anti seize on the water pump bolts, and a little coolant on the o ring, hope that's right? With such a fantastic, quality tutorial I have to question myself! Can I ask another question, please? I'm getting a high pitched squealing noise when I just turn my ignition on, before staring. Weirdly it sounds like it's coming from around my ABS control module.., but it actually sounds to me like a failing water pump... Could the sound just be echoing around in there and throwing me off? I've ordered a stethiscope to try and narrow it down. I only did the TB service and water impeller, serpentine belt and tensioners 2 years ago, and I've only done about 10,000 miles since - they were quality parts. I know parts can fail early, but this noise is driving me nuts as it seems to be coming from further away than the water pump. Would the water pump make a noise with just turning the ignition on? It doesn't make any sense to me. It still makes the noise when the engine is running, but only intermittently, hot or cold. TB looks to be in good condition, and both belts seem to be running in line perfectly, nothing loose, and the noise doesn't seem to be coming from them. Thank you in advance for your time, if you can spare any that is! Keep up the great work regardless! Cheers!

    Great video, the bolts however shouldn't they all be replaced? Audi is a fan if stretch bolts so one time use just like their hose clamps.

    • @wayneair
      @wayneair 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      not all of them. just on stretch-to-yield bolts, like axle hub bolts (147 ft lbs +180 degrees of rotation) or connecting rod bolts, where the added tension creates the greatest strength. the reused bolts torqued to spec creates more than adequate strength for the purpose they were designed for, while the torque spec is enough to induce tension, it isn't enough to reduce the mechanical integrity of the fastener.

    For some reason, my marks went off during removal of belt by like 1 tooth or so. I was going to push the cam back later before I put the belt but after spraying it to clean the surface my mark went off so this is a double mess. I should have used a really good paint marker. Anyways, I was able to put the cover back on and realign everything. I was getting stressed out but now I am relieved. I always stayed away from this due to situations like this. Rotating the engine a few times and when everything was aligned reassured my work. Hopefully everything works out tomorrow and I am pretty sure I am gonna get this to work. Without this video, I probably would never do this job. lol.

    I have a 2006 A4 Cabriolet 1.8T (manufactured on Jan 2006, the last model year for this 1.8T). Can I ask you a different question about my broken coolant pressure relief valve (located right on the top of the engine)? The plastic valve was broken and is leaking coolant when the engine is hot or even more leaking during a high-speed cruising or in hot weather in S. Californian. I took it to Audi dealer and was told, in order to replace the $10-dollar worth of valve, the repair work needs to depressurize and then re-pressurize the coolant system. The total work needs two hours and will cost me $450. Based on the end of your video, I noticed that you just need to run the engine for a few minutes to get rid of the extra air from the coolant system. Did I misunderstand your video or was misled by the dealer? Could you give me a few kind pieces of advice? Many thanks!

  • @wayneair
    @wayneair 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    when rotating the crank to check for interference/hard binding and one is unsure of what amount of resistance is normal, one can easily remove the spark plugs, then there should be zero resistance, and any form of binding is evidence of the motor being out of time.

      bigtreesfall I think they’re pretty much the same. Just make sure you find tutorials with the same litreage and if it’s N/A or not. I found a video on a VW Passat with a 2.0T and it helped me so I think it’s the same.

    Hey guys. After completing the procedure, I turned the car, and started just fine. I watched the bubbles in the expansion tank and refill it accordingly. But I notice that fans were on all the time. I though that there was no coolant in the radiator and since one post refer that the little valve to drain the radiator in the lower hose has to go with the flow of the coolant, I am concern. I wonder in what position that valve needs to be? North and South or East to West. I do not want to block the flow of the coolant. And why the fans are constantly running?. They start slow and then they get in high speed. Thanks for the feed back.
    Marcos

    • @DavidSain1
      @DavidSain1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Marcos Lasanta the drain valve should not impede the coolant flow. If it is open, your coolant will spill out as you fill it. However one other commenter mentions this will cut the flow. Try turning it 90°.
      There is a better way to bleed the system. Clamp off the small expansion tank hose to block coolant flow (you can find the locking pliers for this at any auto parts store).
      Remove the vent cap at the top of the coolant line that is under the engine cover. This is a small coolant line running the length of the engine.
      Pump the air out by using the right hand to squeeze the radiator hose on the driver side holding this position. Then plug the hole on the vent with a finger on your left hand and releasing the right hand.
      Repeat this "pumping" procedure until coolant just starts to glow from the vent, re-install the cap and engine cover. I think I pumped 6 or 7 times to remove all air from the system.
