Damn I wish there were still more anime like Area 88. Just pure air to air dogfighting in jets or piston engine fighters. Seeing those Kfirs, Phantoms, Viper and F-100 made me nerdgasm for a bit.
Unfortunately the modern anime industry is more interested in waifu-bait Shonen and slice-of-life anime they can market to a wide audience. You'll get a few good anime despite this, but we're long past the technical porn that is combat anime like this.
I would at the least recommend Macross Plus (and to an extend the OG too). Plus really fucks hard, and the visual animation and care on the dogfights and missile spam is *godly*

Anime: so... the pilot we kill during this dogfight...No only does he get absolutely shredded by 23mm cannon fire but all the blood in his body fills up his entire helmet and after that happens as his Skyhawk is falling lifelessly from the sky(yeah, I know it doesn’t make sense) let’s have another Mig-23 come and strafe him until his Skyhawk explodes into tiny burning fragments!!!!!!
Don't get alot of rounds with that Gsh-23. And they didn't get alot of gas either. But that craps gets in the way of an exciting combat aviation sequences. But yea, they did seem like that hated that particular Skyhawk.
Rival mercenary air forces, no fucks given whatsoever! This was an OVA based on the excellent manga so they could get away with a bit more gore in the combat sequences. I loved seeing all those different Cold War era fighter jets, there was a SAAB Draken at Area 88 at one time plus F-1 Mirages, an A-10, F-100s, F-105s, whatever Micky the quartermaster could get a hold of; no one asked questions.
Of course the F-5 and the F-16 where the ones that dominated the battle those MIG-27s where lucky their Apex predators where not around the F-14 Tomcats
Thanks for this video! I am relatively new to anime and was wondering if there was stuff like this and now I know! I found both the OVA and the 2004 dub and it looks like the 2004 dub is the OVA broken down into smaller episodes but the order of events looks different. The 2004 dub also appears to have remade the aeriel sequences because they look much more modern and have a cleaner 3D feel to them. Are there any other anime like this out there?
MiG-23. Sukhoi didn't make an aircraft designated as Su-23. What's beautiful about this clip is the care the animators had for making the aircraft distinguishable from each other. This guy was in an F-5. That guy was in an A-4. The action as the MiG swings its wings back. Nice.
