    I would love to meet James. I actually didn’t know he animated with milt kahl that’s extremely cool sine he was one of Disney’s best animators

      I don’t think he ever animated with Milt Kahl, he just initially followed how Milt created model sheets. Which he then goes on to say isn’t quite thorough enough for modern studios

      @@TheEpicJimmy Plus, Milt was an influence on James, but I personally feel like James had more warmth on his animation than Milt.
      I love Milt Kahl’s animation and design stuff too, but his head swaggles can get annoying pretty fast.

    Before model sheets, I usually do rough modelling or sculpting characters in Blender, no sketches beforehand. Old-schooled in traditional art, I don't bother sketching first, while I model heads & bodies. For character designs, I usually get ideas fast while I model or sculpt figures. In Blender, I model fast with subdivision modifier (and sometimes with also skinning modifier switched on). When finished, I pose model in various poses and thence do sketches for model sheets.

    The first model sheets that I ever saw in my life were model sheets for Belle. And they are what made me interested in animation. To hear the actual artist that made them saying they were bad is somehow very funny for me.

    A little trick i use is i spend enough time doing every variation of poses and what not on character sheets then i basically Frankenstein parts from my character sheets to save time. So by then im only drawing inbetweens. Unless ofcourse i need something really specific.

    Its THE CLEAN Crew who are THE REAL unsung heroes of 2D animation, a LOT of 2D animators are so LAZY in doing GOOD well drawn ON MODEL characters and its because of that spolied attitude and never went through doing clean up animation that the clean animation team will put them on MODEL!

      So very, *VERY TRUE.* Some of them had already received tough old-schooled art training when they were kids. Over the years, they did plentiful exercises with figure drawing, portraiture, life still, painting, etc. They also did plentiful exercises of blind contour drawing. They were lucky if their tutors were as polished as Andrew Loomis, Hans Holbein, etc.
      Today, I see lazy 2D animators sketching at leisured pace, doing their hairy outlines on ovals, clutching their pencils the wrong way. Absolutely nothing like what you would have ever been taught in traditional art schools in the times before 1950s or 1960s. In their toughest art classes, you were forbidden to use erasers while sketching from life, forbidden to draw hairy lines within outlines, required to hold pencils properly so to avoid Artist's Callus (swollen joints of fingers). Even the finest schools of animation today (like Vancouver School of Animation, for example) don't teach the right ways of pencil sketching and inking with pen or brush.
      Real old-schooled artists like Andrew Loomis from the past were swinging and spinning their pencils like propellers in their agile hands, while striking up to 180 strokes per minute on papers. Speed is possible through training. Speed was necessary in toughest art schools, especially if you were training to become a portraitist sketching an impatient child sitter or an animal that won't sit absolutely still for you.
