Hey, nice video! But I do feel like I have to point something out, the "chest fry" isn't really a fry scream, is a pitched/compressed false chord scream, that sounds like a fry scream. There is a big misconception with people thinking its fry, but technically its not. This technique is my go to technique, so I found out its possible to transition to gritty singing, and then into clean singing, and the other way around is to transition into full-on false chord. The only thing that's not possible, is to transition to a standard fry scream. It sound like a low fry, but really its just an extremely compressed and pushed falsechord scream with a note underneath.
Correct, however, you can compress a fc scream into a fry scream… which is what he’s doing lol. Fry distortion from the false folds🤘🏼 Also, For future reference, it’s false cord, not chord😇
There's no way to know for sure what's happening mechanically until you get scoped. I feel like when you go from typical throat singing to a "gutteral" the false cords begin to "burp" up air much the way the vocal folds do when they begin to fry. Soooooo false cord fry maybe? When I use this technique, my mouth and pheranx control the pitch for the most part. I feel like there is another type of false cord scream that doesn't involve that...ummm false cord frye?... where the tension in the false folds does most of the pitch modulation. This is the technique I use when immatating Northlanes lows. I'm not very good at those lol. I feel like this may also be Cory Taylor's approach possibly...
Funny this popped up in my feed tonight. I actually did this in the shower tonight just trying new stuff with different mouth positions. Keep up the great content.
THANKS FOR THIS VIDEO, its so useful. I would like to add another explaination that worked for me: My fry scream (lows) sound like in this video and similar to will, what i do is i lower my larynx, like if im going to do a false chord or yawn, i put that larynx position but i do a fry scream insted of FC, that also changes A LOT the tone. Its pretty much what we see in this useful video but with another perspective of saying it, keep practicing
How do you distinguish when doing vocal fry/distortion of any kind when you're doing it properly, from when you're doing it incorrectly and causing damage to your vocal chords? I have no foundation in vocals beyond where my music theory carries over when it comes to key and whatnot; however, I don’t have the practical knowledge to distinguish good vs bad form. I know there are a lot of self taught metal vocalists that never had a problem, but I also know even well known singers like Angela from Arch Enemy are capable of doing improper distortion and irreprably damaging your vocal chords and building up scar tissue.
All hes doing there is a guttural but its super tuned and developed. If you can do a guttural then you're on the right track. If not ill make a tutorial at somepoint on how to do this!
Hey dude, thanks so much. Great vid. I was wondering if you wouldn’t mind sharing which tech you use for home recording and any EQ you’d recommend for scream vox? Sorry, not quite on the topic of your vid but would appreciate your advice. 🙏
the fry vs false chord thing is actually a really blurry line and a lot of the best vocalists go back and forth between without that much of a transition
iscream is my account just on my main account right now, this is correct. Theres a huge blur in the screaming community and most vocalists dont actually know what they're doing as far as what scream is coming out of their mouth. False chord isnt used as much as people think. Theres a few i know of like old asking alexandria, jared dines, david from extreme vocal institute. Ill make another video soon explaining this!

Will does exclusively False Chord...
Not true. He does both. His dominant technique is fry.
