Very nicely scored short film! Your versatility shines through in this, and it is very obvious that you have all the skills required of a large scale film composer, including a touch of personality in your compositional voice. It really shone through for me at the flute solo at ~5 mins following the reprise of the opening theme. This is a brilliant piece to have in your portfolio, and I hope this project will help get you more recognition. Gwaith ardderchog!
If I were to point out anything I didn't like about your score, I would like to comment that although the music always fit the scene, it sometimes felt like it was shifting about a little too quickly or drastically. If possible, I feel like a linking factor, such as a timbral motif or a slowly changing ostinato, could be used to link the changes in the pace and tone of the score to make it feel like more of an arc. However, I understand that time constraints or directorial instruction may have made something more subtle like this difficult to implement.
Thanks a lot for the constructive criticism (and also for your first comment). All the possible excuses don't apply here. It is a conscious decision and an issue I am very much aware of for a longer time. If you decide to stay close to the picture and make colourful film music (I wrote the piece for a competition, which has its own rules, different from scoring a real project, wheter we like it or not), that's the kind of trouble you have to deal with. I spent a lot of time on the transitions of the formal parts. But nonetheless it's good to get a fresh perspective from someone who wasn't involved in the process of making the music.
Hi. For crisp and clear strings I use Spitfire Chamber Strings, for the broad and lush brushstrokes I use Spitfire Symphonic Strings (occasionally doubled with Cinestrings), for brass: VSL Synchron Brass and some Spitfire Symphonic Brass, for tutti woodwinds: Berlin Woodwinds by Orchestral Tools, for some solistic woodwinds: Berlin Soloists, Percussion: Spitfire Percussion, and from time to time I use some Omnisphere or Zebra2 for subbasses.
Looking forward to more tutorials👍
Well done Gary !
Toller Score, sehr nuanciert und aufmerksam
