    This sounds fantastic, Gary! Perfectly suited to the film and very impressive production. I’m really curious, is this all programmed or is it a combination of midi and real musicians.

      Thanks for your kind words! It's all made with virtual instruments. One library that really helped me to achieve more realism is "Berlin Woodwind Soloists". But I think the piece would sound much better with real players.

    I can't help but disagree with the main premise of this video. From the first few minutes of the first episode I could not help but fall in love with this score. I think it helped me fall in love with the whole series. The music of this show is amazing. Thanks for this video and its analysis of this score.

    • @hirchemusic
      @hirchemusic 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey @user-db8gq7tf3l thanks for your comment and for your critical feedback. Am I getting you right, that you think the main idea of the video is wrong in the way, that the score is very noticable and not in the background at all? My answer to this would be, that for me the music of BES is unobtrusive, but not unremarkable! I absolutely agree with you that it is indeed a great score and one of of it's qualities is, that it doesn't surpass the picture, it has no need to help the action by exaggerating and it takes its time. Some people - like you - might notice it right from the start, others might not notice until the end why the show is so immersive (great part of it is, of course, the music). How far in the background one perceives the soundtrack is subjective. But for me playing a great supporting role is one of the greatest things to be achieved artistically. If I wouldn't think so, I shouldn't have become a film composer. Part of why I made the video, was because I wanted people to notice Amy Doherty's mastery. If you got it right away, that's great! Thanks again.

      @@hirchemusic I think I need to apologise for the strong wording of my comment. You are absolutely right in as much as the music complements the narrative, it uses dialogue and sound effects to shift and change with the action. What I wanted to say is that despite its subtlety, it is such beautifully written music that I could not help but notice it. It speaks to you just as powerfully as the images and the dialogue. In the final episode (I think) 'Misu's rebirth almost made me cry. I have to admit that, although I do not understand music, I do notice the music in films and this just stood out. As I said, I know nothing about music but I love watching videos like yours where music is broken down and explained. It really shows the thought that goes into a score. Please continue your work because it is highly edifying and interesting. Well done

    It's funny, I've watched this series many, many times, and its soundtrack is so perfect, yet I could never recall it. It really does slip into the background. Yet whenever I hear those motifs, they immediately trigger my obsessive love for the show.

    Thank you so much for the music, I absolutely love the detail you put into this work. I actually have a lot more questions about the "blue eyes samurai theme" which you use to seperate sections of the video. I have been trying to figure what istrument or instruments were used to make that intense deep bass string sound. I would love a more thorough breakdown of just that theme or I would be satisifed with just the knowledge of how they made that sound.

    • @hirchemusic
      @hirchemusic 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I also love the beefy low end of the interludes. Since I don't have a score or any contact to the composer, I can only give you my best guess based on the analysis I did for this video: since the leading plucked Instrument is a shamisen (which is used throughout the whole season), my idea is that the bass comes from an atificially pitched down shamisen. During my research I could not really find footage of a bass shamisen, but I heard at least that they exist, but they are really rare. So I think, Doherty pitched down a shamisen with an octaver pedal or some kind of plugin and maybe she also added an extra electric bass to give the sound more sub frequencies. Then of course some additional compressor and equilizing to make it fatter and so you get a pretty great bass sound from a rather thin melody instrument. I hope this answers your question. Have a nice day!
