    It's called Way of the Spider, basically there was an arc where Spider man lost his spider sense and he went to train with Cap and Shang Chi to create a new fighting style that would compensate for it, later spider sense returned, improving the style further

    Capoeira is additionally fascinating because of its connection to history and slavery. It is almost always done to music as it was hidden to look like dancing to the untrained eye so slaves could learn self defense in secret. This was a fantastic video pat!

      The Batman's fighting analysis would undoubtedly be interesting. Unfortunately for The Witcher and Geralt fans, I'm pretty sure CD Projekt Red just brought in a swordsman, put him in a motion capture suit, then told him to just do whatever would look the coolest. I say this because so many actual swordsmen who are also Witcher fans have said that his style of sword play and the way he swings his sword is simply just not practical....unfortunately. Regardless, Geralt of Rivia will forever remain one of the best and most badass main characters of all-time.

    • @manningsmith5503
      @manningsmith5503 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That’s true, but I would imagine the swordsman had to be drawing on at least some prior knowledge. The moves may be impractical, but they were probably influenced to an extent by actual fighting styles, along with the stances he takes between attacks.

    • @manningsmith5503
      @manningsmith5503 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That may just be me giving the swordsman too much credit though. I really don’t know, but I’d like to see Polygon’s take on it regardless.

    As a Brazilian from Bahia, I saw many rodas de capoeira in my file, and I never even thought of associating it with Spider-Man, even though it makes total sense. I'm very proud to see that a cultural expression of my state is part of the new Spider-Man. Even though capoeira has African roots, only in Bahia it became that fast, dangerous and acrobatic. It's actually so dangerous that its practice were prohibited by the early 1900s. Many Americans come to my city every year to learn capoeira. but I never learned it myself. Thank you for the awesome video!

KOF Maximum had a main character use it and he wasn't Brazilian either. Urban Reign (which I THINK takes place in the Tekken universe) features a brother and sister duo who use it and neither are Brazilian.
      Also, the original comment specifically said 'Afro-Brazilian'.

  • @Karliff5

    Considering Spider-Man has enough physical strength to bench press a building and always pulls his punches against non-powered enemies, his Capoeira style moves make a *lot* of sense if you consider that maybe he doesn't put his strength behind those strikes, instead allowing just the centrifugal force to provide the energy of the blows.

  • @TheDeathmail
    @TheDeathmail 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    To be noted, most of the time, it wasn't that Spiderman didn't have enough power, but that he has too much power for dealing with his enemies. Spiderman doesn't want to kill. So for him, using technique and speed based attacks that don't rely too much on his own physical strength is perfect for him, using more momentum and tricks to defeat his enemies.

    This was a real cool video, nice one Pat. Geralt of Rivia from the Witcher could be a good one to do, all of the games especially the third convey nicely the cautious, athletic, parry/riposte centric moveset described in the books (which was often times translated as tracing a semicircle, or guarding halfway through a dodge). The third game especially emphasises this nicely in Gameplay with the expansion of two separate dodge buttons, as well as many other parts of his attack moveset and gameplay. They systematise fighting and the mindset of a Witcher very well.

    • @JudasBooth123

      The Batman's fighting analysis would undoubtedly be interesting. Unfortunately for The Witcher and Geralt fans, I'm pretty sure CD Projekt Red just brought in a swordsman, put him in a motion capture suit, then told him to just do whatever would look the coolest. I say this because so many actual swordsmen who are also Witcher fans have said that his style of sword play and the way he swings his sword is simply just not practical....unfortunately. Regardless, Geralt of Rivia will forever remain one of the best and most badass main characters of all-time.

    • @Rugeon
      @Rugeon 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh yeah for sure, I'm aware that his fighting style is by no mean's realistically practical or based off real swings/ technique, but there's still an opportunity to point out the grains of truth present in his fighting. What is a compass step/ pirouette/ half pirouette, why would anyone ever do it while sword fighting, what aspects of some of his strikes represent the characteristics described in the books. This new show has a lot of options in terms of what it explores, such as talking about the types of techniques that work for flashy media, and what doesn't, as well as what the impractical technique says about a character (like a lowered guard showing collected confidence in skill/ unrealistic reaction time of the character +rule of cool).
      But I don't know what Pat is going for to be fair, he might have more strict guidelines for what the show is about, in which case a Witcher video may be fairly light/ disappointing in describing a realistic fighting style represented. Witcher is also be well trodden ground by this point tbh, as you've pointed out others have talked about it before, and Pat might rather do something else. I just reckon it's popular enough regardless to maybe warrant a slightly different episode format, idk.

    • @JudasBooth123
      @JudasBooth123 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Eli Lee yeah I'd kinda like to see something new covered. Perhaps the fighting in
      "God of War" and what influenced that. The battle axe is such a bold and terrifying weapon. What has me most pumped up though is the unique martial arts styles they decided to chose for Spider-Man and how rad it will look to see them all blended together. I've been a pretty diehard Spider-Man fan since I was a kid and the WWF style wrestling is the only type of martial arts used in SM's arsenal that I've heard of before. Definitely not Lucha libre(though to his credit Raimi did throw hints of it in during the first film). But the choice and decision of incorporating capoeira as pretty much his base style is not only bold but really, really rad in my opinion. I can't believe this game seriously comes out the day after my birthday and I cannot wait for that day to come.

      Geralt's flashy style is borrowed directly from the combat descriptions in the Witcher books, I think they did and awesome rendition of what the author was going for originally. I'm not sure if either the author or CDPR actually based it on any real life thing (probably not, since real world swordplay is 90% stabs without any flash), but it sure would be cool to find out

    Please do more videos like this! This was awesome! You could try digging into The Witcher series next -- the dev team did some interesting things contrasting the NPCs' real-world medieval sword style with a more balletic one they invented for Geralt.

    This is a great video. Just wanted to point out that at 1:26 that's actually a touchdown raiz with no swing through. This is usually a power move that leads into other moves like corks and such. It's meant not to travel far really but Spidey's getting some distance using it for evasion. Either way it looks really cool and I'm glad it's in the game as I'm trying to learn it at the moment.

    Love this Patrick! I wondered a lot about the fighting in the Assassin's Creed games. So much of those games was historically and geographically located, but the fighting styles throughout the games were never really explained in the lore (even though they were a huge part of the gameplay).

    Late comment, but this was a very very cool video, if Pat wants to do more of this, all of the characters in the Arkham series have very distinctive fighting styles that would probably make for a fascinating exercise to dissect.

    I always liked the fact that in the first Neversoft Spider-Man game, his standard three-hit combo was almost identical to the moves Capcom had given him in their Marvel Super Heroes/Capcom Versus fighting games. Finishing with that upwards-pointing Hard Kick, for example.

    It was nice of you to point the "fun" part of those fights. Capoeira is largely praticed here in Brazil on its dance and fun style, despite the fact that its fighting techniques are obviously included on that, but also praticed as a fight itself. During the enslavement times here, the africans used to fight in their rare spare time, and when the portugueses appeared, they pretended they were dancing. This is how the dance/fight duality came to be, just out of curiosity.

    Hey man! I really like your analysis! I'd like to throw in that the acrobatics Spidey employs are taken from something called Tricking, or Martial Arts Tricking. With a rooting in martial arts like capoeira, wushu and taekwon-do, and with a flavor of ye olde gymnastics and breakdancing. The motion capture guys they got for Spidey both have roots in Tricking and Parkour :-) Love the video homie! Look up Tricking! It sounds like you'd be into it! :-D
