An old shop hack for removing a stuck threaded bottom bracket is to clamp the BB tool in a bench vise and rotate the bike frame (in the correct direction) as the lever. You can get an amazing amount of leverage from the chain stays. Sometimes it is useful to have a friend push down on the BB to keep the tool engaged or thread a nut onto the tool (like in the video).
I have a 92 hardrock same color. Those are badass bikes. Those new Deore v brakes are great. They bite just as hard as disc's. The billy bonkers tires make that a real fast bike on pavement n gravel. Best thing it's steel and makes a smooth ride. Great build.
Nice build. I did same to my old GT Outpost. I put cruiser bars a front rack and some new street friendly tires on it. Works great for cruising around town.
@@TheBikeSauce I can bring the bike over tomorrow afternoon if you are free. Just wondering how we can arrange this as I don’t have your contact information, although I might have an idea where you live.
Hell yea! So many fun resto-mods possible with those late 80s-mid 90s HardRocks. I’ve probably built and sold 6 or 7 in the last 2 years. My own is the sweet cranberry-violet paint fade. Soma Clarence bars, Raceface 38t narrow-wide up front and Advent 9-speed 11-46 rear with Advent derailleur and trigger shifters.
This is one of my favorite builds! It got me wanting to do something similar to my 88 Cannondale sm700 XL and make it have the riding position of my 1952 Raleigh Superbe or old Dutch bike but then i saw the price of those parts :)
The bike most of us should be riding and having more fun on if it weren't for the slammed bar high seat post drop bar bikes we're told are cool. Simple practicality and comfort. Love it. I've been to Amsterdam and watched cyclists on bikes like this blasting along with 2 kids onboard.
What a nice build! I might have gone with yellow cable housings. That would have popped! Why didn't you guys grease the headset? Who knows how old that grease in there is.
2:27 I had a stuck BB once. Kept the wheels on, bike on the ground, stepped and stood on the darned thing. Lots of WD40 too. Still love square tapers though Sweet build 🤘
Looks great. Should be a very usable bike. I’d have opened up the headset as long as I had everything else opened up. Inspect it. If it’s OK, grease and reassemble. If not, replace.
@@myvicariouslife4012 ha nothing getting by you. We had one meetup for the build. I would’ve needed the bike beforehand to take measurements to order the right hs.
Nicely done! That is a seriously low first gear..I run a 38t chain-ring and 32t largest cassette gear and it is a very low gear....Are you planning on going up vertical walls??
The rear big ri g is bigger than a 32t. I'm not sure what it is but even if it's a 52t then that along with the 38t front results in a .73 final low which is not very low. Had they went with the 30t front then the ratio would be a crazy .57 (and probably 16 gear inches), which is wall climbing stuff. If it were me I would pick a front ring that allows me to use most of the cassette. A 32t or 34t. I would run 2x though to keep the cluster tight.
@@TheBikeSauce I think Russ from PLP has a 2x with a big cassette. Not sure what D he's using....I like to run a 11-36 cassette on most of my builds. On my 26ers I like that along with a 24t/32t front ring setup. I also like four bolt double bcd cranks as they allow for a world of ring options.
It’s amazing, dude! Came out better than I ever could have imagined 🎉
Looking forward to your video! Hopefully it's still going strong.
@@TheBikeSauce yep! Should be out this week :)

I’m all in on restomodding old mtb’s. 48 front ring and 1x7 plus long high bars on my 88 Rockhopper, now a sweet little street cruiser.

Love to see vintage bikes getting mods! It was nice meeting you last Wednesday. Maybe I can show you what I did with my Trek 930 one of these days…
Would love to see it!

Some of the best assembly videos on youtube. Great familiarity with bikes, great editing.
Great build. I hope you or Mitch put up a parts list. Many of us have family bikes from the 90s, what a great way to repurpase them.
Oh good idea. Will update the description
That budget bike workstand sure is holding up real well with all that force going through it!
I love this build. Any chance you can add a parts list?
Looks cool. Only thing I would add is mud guards. For a daily driver /transport bike in many parts of the world this is simply a must.
Nice vid
Right on. This bike will be used in LA, where rain isn’t the biggest issue

Damn, Mitch gonna hit some sick KOMs and climbs on this one! What an unexpected collab, lol.
😆😆 I’m afraid for the bike with his power

Hey gang .a little heat goes a long way . Auto tech know how lol. Looks like fun 🍺🍺
Sorry .you need to get small compressor. Youll love it
Pretty cool, some mks pedals would be 🔥
Sweet build. Would love to see the buildsheet. I have a 90's Rockhopper

Sweeeeet build ! great video too !
Digging the attention to detail :)
@MitchBoyer @thebikesauce - what wheels did you guys use for this project? Also from Tokyo bike? Doing a similar project with a 90's GT.

haha we do what we gotta do!
Spending $600 on parts for a $100 bike - been there done that
Nice vid and bike....but hard to believe the headset didn't get serviced!
A nice quill stem like this looks sculpted. A threadless will never look that elegant. And I've never had one snap on me, but i don't exactly send it
Phil's Green. That grease is so good and mysterious.
Turned out fantastic
Beautiful 🤙🏼
What seat did you use? Cool resto. I have a 96 Scott Superslope I’m bringing back to life so your video is an inspiration.
Turned out great! Congrats! What size are the tires? Would the hardrock frame fit 2.5's ?
Can we get a part list please?
How do you know how many spacers on the external bottom bracket? Why is it different on either side? Tks
Lookin to play around with a 93 Trek 950, soon. Likely a 1X, swept bars, stem, etc. cool Build! You should visit and Pimp my Bike!
That cassette is awesome.

Nice work. A true beauty. Since you converted the BB, why not just replace the the Headset bearings since it’s all disassembled? Love the work.
Yea, should’ve done so maybe. It was Mitch’s bike and we were keeping it budget
@@TheBikeSauce Headset bearings are about $1 apiece per caged retainer bearing

Super, just the bars my aunt wants - what are they?
Cruiser, albatross maybe.
great video! What was the internal rim size of your wheels?
Very nice!
Those bars are dope! They kinda look like Nitto Promenade

Bosco Bars?
Nice video I did something just like yours it is comfy rider with them bars but I switched over to 8" tall bmx bars and never looked back
Do you always lube the cables?
looking at the same drive train for my bike, what length chain did you need to fit that size chainring with a 52t cassette?
do you have a list of tools needed for this project? id like to do something similar as a summer project!
Did he switch to 650b? Or are they still just 26” wheels?
what saddle is it ?
Such a nice build and good work! 🤘🏻 I would also love to give new life to an older mtb!
dope
What kind of wheels?
Bars make and model please?

Can I use QR hub on semi horizontal drop out?

Same Tokyo bike wheelset I’ve been using on other builds

Why is it purple in the thumbnail?
Bad thumbnail skilz
How did you remove that rust? WD-40?
metal brush and fresh grease
If it was up to me I’d put bmx bars on it , those are old man bars , I’m sure dad wants to feel like a kid again and not Mary poppins
Old men know more than kids.
OK, now the cyclist is sitting upright. Wrists have to be cocked way forward. Tilt the handlebars down
what do you call that kind of handle bar? i like it thanks
