Phil, I always noticed that BF4 has pretty good directional sound. Would you say so as well? On maps like OpLock or Metro, I'm always able to tell where footsteps and gunfire are coming from, but that might just be my knowledge of those maps helping me out.

Yeah, Battlefield excells in every technical aspect. But is it only me that kinda thinks having a so-so sound system is almost needed for CS. If you can pinpoint the exact location of enemies with the peek advantage there already is you'd be an unstoppable force. It's like in Quake etc. on vertical maps, even if you hear your opponent you can only pinpoint their location if they give it away by taking a pickup/portal or something static on the map. And it's needed otherwise you'd just crouch in a corner until the enemy reveals himself, but I guess that's 80% of the CS gameplay anyways.

So old that it just blends in with other sounds, doesn't even sound real to me anymore. :( First time I heard it I jumped.
There is this great game called real life. It has realistic sounds, full surround sound, great graphics and decent framerates. The antialiasing is sweet and i love how it gets updated constantly and has many servers. Only problems are p2w, no respawn and PVP is constantly happening.

I wish you had included Overwatch as an example. They have built Dolby virtual surround into the game, it's a toggle you have to enable. Without it, OW sounds like CS:GO. But with it, it sounds amazing, like a binaural recording.
If it's off by default, then it probably has some negative side-effect like what philip said about the lag
I don't know, I haven't heard anything about it, or noticed anything. They are very particular about you having to turn off any other virtual surround effect, such as Razers, and I think this could be a reason for it to be off, as it would make everything sound horrible by default for those that use virtual surround, or even the headsets with 5-7 speakers in each ear. Also, it doesn't have any real positive effect for speaker users.
So I think there are a lot of reasons for why they would leave it off by default.
I would love to see 3kliksphilip make a video about it, I was really hoping he talked about it in this one.
I disabled it because it sounds terrible to me. I can't for the life of me pinpoint enemy positions whereas with it disabled, I can.
That's interesting, my experience is completely the opposite. I hopped into the training map when I found it and went up to one of the shooting bots, then slowly turned around, with and without the Dolby surround. Without it, it just sounded like a quite mushy mess, I could hear it go from one ear to the other, but not in front or behind me. With it on, the sound went all around me.
I'm using a pair of AKG K550s, and absolutely no other software effects/enhancements/EQ etc.
I think your headset might already have some surround, either virtual or multiple speakers. Or some software on your PC is trying to do the same, this could even just be Windows' enhancements, I have all Windows sound effects disabled too.
It can cause audio problems if you already have some sort of surround sound setup or 3rd party surround software, so it's off by default

Philip, I love it that you posted this. I've been advocating for the REVIVAL of 3D sound modeling for years.
One note: CS:1.something-1.6 had Aureal's A3D sound system as an option for several years.

Over the years, with newer builds of CS:1.6, it slowly became broken though...
Surround Sound Systems like EAX which is developed by Creative was killed by Microscrap.
After Windows Vista, Hardware Sound doesnt worked anymore.
EAX is a eargusm when turned on, HL1, Bioshock and several other Games are stunning with EAX enabled, you can turn on EAX with Creative ALchemy on newer Versions of Windows, but this is a software based compiler, so your Soundcard doenst use the Soundchip to process the Enviroment Audio, this means more CPU Load :/
I hate that we got 4K, 8K an 329721783K Resolutions, but the Audio Quality is going backwards.

eh. hrtf is making an entry so know we at least will have positional correct audio. Thing like occlusion and reverb are improving in alot of modern engines now.
Hey! Just wanted to make a point about the difference between auralisation and spatialisation
Auralisation is the how you render the soundfield, this is normally stereo but you spoke about HRTF's for binaural audio. HRTF's are essentially a lookup table to tell us how to filter a sound coming from a specific direction, two filters (one for each ear) and we get time,amplitude and frequency content differences between the ear so the brain can do some processing and work out the direction. These HRTF's are measured responses of how sound interacts with our head. Spatialisation is how the sound interacts with the enviroment, so reverberation, occlusion etc.
The 3 programs you mentioned (GSound,TrueSound and VRworks) are more than likely using HRTF's to auralise HOWEVER they are doing something before that stage, which is calculating how the sound travels through a room, by treating sound waves as "rays" and seeing where these rays bounce in the room. A3D did this too, but I don't know the particulars of that software.
I know for modern sound propagation simulations you have to calculate which rays will hit the listener EVERYTIME something moves (if you want it to be accurate), the source, the listener ... a chair. Imagine doing this for every sound SOURCE aswell.This gets really expensive, so most programs "cheat" and assume that the enviroment is a cube, less polygons to test. Most games don't even bother with this, and fake the spatialisation completely with a reverb filter. Occulsion can be faked by rolling off the high frequencies. etc etc. I think this kind of simulation is still a few years off being viable for most games.
HRTF's are also kinda computationally expensive compared to stereo, but they are definitely within the realm of posibility and game devs should really start pushing some computational resources towards audio!

I saw your video of the comparasion and i like the Samson Meteor. I even had a friend play the guitar from 2-3 meters away and it didn't pick up any background noise (his room was probably quiet). The only thing that is making me paranoid are all the amazon reviews saying it would break after 10 months but guess it was just some bad batch/bad luck. Thanks for the response.

In CS GO maybe, in 1.6 the sound was PERFECT, you could precisely pin point enemy positions based on sounds.

I definitely agree with this.I have a lot of trouble with finding location of sounds in CS:GO,especially when they are further away from me.For example,I was in front of A main on Train,and heard footsteps.I thought they are on house stairs,so I called enemy is going probably going B.In fact,enemies were making steps in A main entrance.I wasnt able to recognize if sound is further away in front of me,or close on my right.Btw,am I the only one who didnt get scared by that knocking? I even have door on my right.You wrote it in the video before it appeared,and I was like,oh,that is this thing again,so it didnt surprise me at all

Overwatch's surround sound option does a great job of enhancing gameplay. no joke, it blew my mind when i turned on this function.

one thing that i enjoy outside of CSGO is to listen to Music with Razer Surround sound. Music just seems that much better when comming from all directions. If you close your eyes, you can almost imagine yourself standing in the middle of the band your listening to.

I used Razer Surround for long time and it really helped me getting out from Gold Nova. I didn't notice any delay, just configure it based on your prefrence. Yes it deacrease your FPS but if you have good PC, its worth to install.
