TLDR: Building a good team requires a strong youth and veteran core. Beniers and Kakko for life. If anything, the lack of production from Beniers and Wright proves you cannot structure a rebuild around youth alone. There has to be a balance of youthful energy and veteran leadership to build a strong foundation. It's the same dynamic for parents and children. Our problem isn't investing in veterans - it's buying the wrong veterans/parents. Grubauer and Stephenson were benefactors of great teams and not especially good players before they signed with Seattle. This isn't hindsight. Most analysts panned their contracts. On another note, I meant to comment about Beniers and Kakko during your conversation with John Chik and forgot. Whoops. I know Chik mentioned that Kakko seemed best suited for a line with snipers, but Kakko didn't have success with his line on the Rangers. This is why Seattle was able to get him for peanuts. Ergo, I don't think it makes sense to replicate what the Rangers did with him. I'm a huge fan of his fundamentals. He's doing the little things that we want to see from the entire team. He fights for the puck down low, is a strong checker, uses his size to his advantage, and GETS TO THE NET. I love to see it. Which brings me to Beniers. 99.9% of the time I'm an Eddie Olczyk fan girl and bemoan his absence when he leaves for national broadcasts. Don't get me wrong, I love our entire crew, but I love that Eddie doesn't pull punches about the team's performance. That said, I think his comments about Matty struggling during the Vancouver game were way off base. Matty's the kind of player that most commentators would celebrate with, "His production isn't what he or the team expected, but he's doing all the little things right. So, you have to think, eventually the goals will come." Except Matty's line mates, especially after Eberle went on LTIR, have been especially awful at getting to the net (ie. the fundamentals). I put about as much energy into watching Beniers as I do cringe-watching Stephenson. So, it's a lot. Lol. Suffice it to say, Matty makes the most beautiful passes to the slot only to discover no one is home. He reminds me of Hischier from the Devils - which as far as I'm concerned is the highest praise you can give a center. His two-way game is just so damn good. Beniers and Kakko are a match made in hockey heaven and it's already bearing fruit. Clearly the coaching staff can see it too because they gave their line more shifts during the Canucks game. Matty's finally getting offensive opportunities because Kakko is willing to put in the work. What's more is that when they skate off to the bench, Kakko smiles like a fiend and makes Beniers laugh. I haven't seen Matty smile this much in a long time. Kakko brought the basics of hockey with him and he's helping Matty relax. Let's pray to Cthulhu that this continues.
The answer is no. Masses of people aren't going to stop watching the Kraken just because Seattle gets a NBA team. I don't know many hockey fans that watch basketball because the seasons overlap. And, as you pointed out, you don't watch the NFL. This is because most sports fans have one or two sports they watch consistently. Sports enthusiasts might watch most types of sports, but they're far fewer in number, and more likely to watch the Kraken games in addition to the NBA. Will the team lose some fans to the new NBA team? A few. But I could just as easily argue that they're fringe fans and probably wouldn't have stuck with the team regardless. I don't know why everyone is so worried about attendance when our stadium is packed for nearly every game. Watch a Florida Panthers game. They won the cup and almost no one goes to their games!
