Texas is 75% privately owned. It is hard to find "free" camping sites. This video is misleading.

3 nat'l forests and a couple of national grasslands & wildlife areas plus Big Bend. Not as good as BLM states but is something. Surprised it was on here too.

We all know what the states have to offer. While making another top ten list is nice, what would be nicer is more details on the actual locations INSIDE each of the states. Locations, tips, do’s and don’ts, etiquette ( as in don’t park right next to someone when there is lots of open space)....etc

Fun list. I’d have thought California would rank much higher given the weather, varied terrain from beaches to deserts, to mountains to alpine lakes, and large swaths of state, national forest, and BLM lands.

The ones that I will never visit are the ones with "really long borders", if you know what I mean.

Nevada around Las Vegas is not really great for boondocking. Most places are too close to open shooting ranch and tons of off road enthusiast areas. A lot of garbage and glass at all spots I visited around Las Vegas. Sandy Valley Road, Lovell Canyon Road, Jean Dry Lake.....

  • @gregoryfoster8179

Surprised Texas is on there since there is no BLM property in the state save a small bit in the panhandle. Though we do have 3 nat'l forests in th east in addition to the Big Bend in the SW area and a couple of nat'l grasslands that allow dispersed camping. I live in TX but lived in CO for several years and have traveled and kayaked there regularly as well as AZ, UT, NM and am planning a long retirement excursion this summer that takes through AR, OH, CO, UT, NM. AR wasn't on your list but they have 2 great national forests and where I used to paddle up there was on a Weyerhaeuser forest where we could camp for free.

This is a top ten list. I live in the southeast and there is really nothing out this way...little spots here and there but not enough to even come close to what is available out west. There are some good ones in Florida but if you are wanting to avoid heat, best of luck with any free camping back east.

Are you kidding me? You western people have never been east of the Mississippi. I live in Ohio, and there are a lot of free camping spots here with plenty of places to fish and hunt. Keep going south and West Virginia has many free places to camp. Gods country there. Same with Kentucky, Tenn., and Georgia, South Carolina, and best of all, Florida. Much warmer winter temps than any of your states you mentioned. Get in tuned with the east side of the USA dude.

I was surprised by the eastern half of the US. I figured since it had way more people that it would have way more people in the camp sites and hiking trails. It was the opposite. I've been places in the Eastern US where I haven't seen another person for days. Hiking trails where im the only one there. Hell I stayed at a campsite like 10 miles away from a big city and was the only person there for 2 days.

I live in Indiana, and we have a couple areas like that, but they're few and far between compared to the density of good hunting and fishing spots out west. The Appalachian region is awesome, but don't go there in peak season. Its the most heavily trafficked region in the US in terms of tourists looking for hiking spots. Also, I definitely disagree with the winter temperature thing. Arizona's winter is heaven compared to northern Indiana winters. Our snow has the consistency of concrete, and our winter is still currently going on. (The last freeze here happens in the first week of May).
