Another tip by future character designer, if you want more than 3 colors in a pallet. Pick 1 main color 1 secondary color and then add more in smaller things in the design like a bracelet or earrings ect.
I don't know who the character(s?) is (are?) at 0:31, but if that's your actual opinion on "good" and "bad," I think it just proves your point that good and bad are totally subjective, since I think the character design on the left looks generic as all hell, while the character design on the right is absolutely ADORABLE. I love that '80s-esque aesthetic, and the color palette and simplicity of the clothing really gives the character a genuine, wholesome feel that would make me want to watch HER over the character on the left, any day of the week.
As always... a great and helpfull video, Mari! I think the point with no "overcomplication" of the design is so important. I think the number of designs that just have so fkin many details is increasing, but its often realy stressing to look at them, because your eyes dont know where to look at - especially when everything is additionaly moving and wiggling around. So to keep a balance here is sooooo important. Most iconic designs are pretty simple and have some form of an recognizable feature. You can see that very nicely in the scene of Naruto-characters and ask why you are recognize them after the timeskip to Shippuden and mark down what their individual feature is. Shino or Rock Lee dont have super complex designs, but are easily recognizable. Or another example that i realy like to bring up is "Death the Kid" from Soul Eater. Very simple design, nothing special, two monochrome colors AND symmetrical... EXCEPT the three stripes on his hair and these make him recognizable and stand out. (what is complemented by the design of his clothes - white stripes on black) BUT his clothes wouldnt work that well without his hair-stripes. (Of course his quirk of holding his guns upside down is something special too)
Also art styles are supposed to be unique. You don't have to be anime to have exaggerated expressions. Irys's model's main problem was the color saturation, it wasn't vibrant enough for hololive's typical look. There's nothing wrong with the art style though. An example of non anime but good design is Moonbtch's 2.0 model. Hers is really good. I can't imagine my art without juicy manhwa lips so I'll keep doing what I want. I do what makes me happy and if others enjoy it too, cool, it's a bonus.
Thank you for the helpful tips! I'm not sure whether you respond to comments but I was wondering about tip number 9. Whilst it's important that the vtuber model matches your personality, I think it's equally important that it matches your voice. You can always tell when a voice actor isn't suited to a particular role which can negatively impact the overall enjoyment of the show or in this case stream/video. I've been struggling to design a character that matches my voice and personality and was wondering whether you had any tips on getting around this issue?
I think it's less about trying to match the pitch of your voice and more about acting like that character. For example, if you're character is a child, then you should know that children can't pronounce anything correctly since they are still learning how to speak properly. It would be weird for a child to suddenly know really complex words and be able to pronounce them accurectly. However, I can also see how difficult it is to have your voice sound deeper/sultry if you're trying to go for a more mature character. I think what would help your issue a lot is to think about what kind of character you are really good at playing at. What is their age and personality like? Are they very serious, friendly, or gloomy? These are all different things that will affect your inflection when you're speaking and that will also affect your pitch/tone when trying to match a voice to that character.
It's even worse when debating the whole _male vs female avatar_ as in I've seen some people vtube with girl avatars while being male (not even putting a woman voice) and it works for them though...
IyRS's design wasn't bad it was her model specifically her face that people had a problem with which was your main criticism in the video. Other than her face her overall design was amazing.
Thank you for making these videos, it helps a lot, I have everything ready to go and only have to press the start stream button, the only thing is that I am extremely socialy anxious but I want to do it so bad and am still going to, could I please get a word of encouragement? It would mean a lot. 😅
while almost everything about the video is right, most of the points with Irys has nothing to do with character desing, just art style, Irys desing is MOSTLY the same besides the hair, so you should be a bit careful with mixing the definitions
Good character design isnt about how likable it is, but how recognizeable it is.
Definitely understandable. Wouldn’t want something that is underwhelming but you also don’t want to overdo it as well

Very informative! It is not as simple of throwing all your ideas onto a character or model. Also the new model of yours is great too!

I also can think of a rather obscure one named MechEnzy who uses a 1930s style art style in the model.
Miko love both Maris! ^_^

and also people found her hair too complicated to translate into simpler styles
Makes sense thanks for the tips!
Genuine question: what's wrong with Sana's design?
