- Back in 2011, a television show premiered on Fox called Terra Nova. It ran for one season and was ultimately cancelled. Lets take a look at why TV's new sci-fi drama was cancelled.

I can tell why it was so expensive/cancelled...WAY overblown cast and crew.
Worked on big budget, HUGE cast and crew (Superman, Superman 3...etc.). This was ridiculous, what you get when you put Spielberg on a TV show.
HUNDREDS of crew standing around, and hundreds of extras...equals a huge "cost-cutting" risk when the bean-counters decide who gets the axe.

Hell yes, I loved that show. Also it was based on one of many Federal Black Plans for an event as such if it was to happen. All in all a damn good show great cast and a story line that could have shown so much more.

I actually composed the musical score for this show and it was an amazing experience. Every week I would also conduct a full orchestra at Fox For the show which is extremely rare for a tv show. I was sad to see it go. Thanks for this great breakdown of its fate. We put our heart and soul into it. ❤

Zombies sell and the current hype is zombies.
The difference with the walking dead is that there are a lot of people out there in the world while in terra nova you only have people coming from the gate/future. It's less interesting

I watch the Avatar movie all the time just for the actors, other world stuff and tec, not really for the storie XD. Lets see what the 100 season 6 new planet has for us this year. I really enjoyed Terra Nova when it was on air. Another show that I was bummed about was V when it got cancelled after 1 season. How do you cancel a show when you end with nuclear war with aliens on the horizon :p
V was a really great show at the time. I actually think, however that the show Alien Nation was much better.
Never saw Alien Nation, but V seemed to have it all. The action, the drama, and the mystery. I guess there's just not a broad enough television audience for alien TV shows.
My memory is very faulty at times, but I think that Alien Nation was something of a First Contact sort of thing where Earth meets Aliens and try to overcome their racial differences. I believe there were at least two movies. I know there was one. I think there was a sequel and then the television show that followed.

My kids loved it and there was very little bad language, violence and death. Maybe that was the problem for Fox. Too benign and family friendly

Terra nova was actually great, ahead of its time but I needed a second season.
The problem with Terra Nova was it didn't spend enough time building up the bigger story arc that was revealed at the last few episodes. From what I remember, it spent way too much time on the family drama problem of the week formula without balancing the bigger story to keep people thinking and talking. I lost a lot of interest mid way through the season, but stuck with it, and the last episode actually made me want more and kind of hooked me.
Ed C Exactly. I was sold on a show about a colony surviving in the age of the Dinosaurs. Instead I got a family soap opera that might have a 15 second dinosaur scene every couple of episodes.

The 100 took Three whole seasons Before actually building/explaining the story arc.No first season of anything ever explain the whole story though.

I do have to note that Fox, while trigger happy with cancellations, is also very lenient with producing shows to begin with. Many shows got a start on Fox, that the more traditional channels would never produce.

I've watched season one so many times and i love it is a great show but it really makes me sad to see such a great show just up and canceled and what bums me out the most is how they left it on a cliff hanger like that

I think the show Jericho would make a great addition to this new series. From the fan campaign of sending nuts to CBS HQ to get it renewed, and how badly CBS handled the second season, would make a interesting story for this series.

Agreed, It had a good story, good acting and memorable characters. It suffered ratings wise because of the poor handling by CBS. The first half of season one had really good ratings, but after a very long mid-season break it failed to regain traction.

I'll have to find the comic book, I didn't know that one was made, hopefully it will help fill some of the holes in the story.
Also when CBS agreed to a season 2 after the Fan campaign, they gave it a short season 2, placed it in a bad time slot during the summer, during the summer all shows suffer a ratings drop. Also The time slot was at the same time as American Idol which was a ratings juggernaut at the time.

It’s a shame this show was cancelled, I found it streaming an binged the whole thing in a couple days. Then watched it again! It had some fantastic work by cast & crew, and was much higher quality than many other shows of the time. I’m off to rewatch it!

It boiled down to being another boring family drama. Falling Skies is another version of the same show - draw people in with the sci-fi intrigue and dupe them into watching more bland family struggles and squabbling.
I agree. I saw the pilot and some episodes and the human/family drama over shadoewed the amount of dinosaur on time..
Sounds like a lot of TV shows in general. Some with dinosaurs. Some with aliens. Some with zombies. Some with overpaid, unfunny comedians.
yeah... they got father/son angst on everything. And worse, only the fathers were allowed to have complex feelings about it. The sons were just "angry about something". That might have been what did the show in: lack of overlap between the "yay dinosaurs" crowd and the "I don't understand my teenage son" crowd.

Damn i miss that show. I wanted to see more of it. I figured the budget would be high cause Spielberg was involved but so what. Dish out the $$$ and keep going. The other show that ended with a cliffhanger is syfy's Defiance. There should have been another season to close it out.

It became really good at the second season, but it was too late already. It was quite clear SyFy (jeez, that effin- name change) wanted to kill it since the middle of the second season by moving the broadcasting times. They just gave up on it. The problem is they didn't accept the first season as a "setup" to something bigger, which the next seasons would be. You can still find interviews with the creators saying some of the ideas they wanted to put into the next seasons and boy, they were awesome. People sort of weren't ready for a more serious Stargate series. However today it would work just great. Just look at the Star Trek, how it has literally just risen from it's grave. There is still great chance for reviving the whole franchise. It seems though MGM simply doesn't want to or it would have happened already.
It wasn't bad, but the characters just didn't live up to the previously set standards. There wasn't a rouge like Shepard, a badass like Ronin, or a loveable dumbass like McKay. We got stuck with Lieutenant Hooters instead.
One show I really loved that got cancelled was The River on ABC...it would be awesome if you did a video on that!

Good video. You're right about FOX being very trigger happy with cancelling shows after 1 season and not giving them the chance. Two other great FOX shows that you should do are Alcatraz and Space: Above and Beyond.

I think Terra Nova was deeply flawed. Their weapon technology meant that they were never seriously threatened by, nor needed to adapt, to the environment & the fauna.
I think it would have been much more interesting if they had lost most technology, and had to contend with the dinosaurs using spears, bows & arrows, and their wits. Survival would not have been ensured, and would not have required super intelligent dinosaurs to create drama.
They left his show on a major major cliffhanger. It ended with the bag guys heading to a certain point of which they had been exploring. And the people at the compound open in up a crate they had brought back that contained an old wooden ships front end.
I loved Terra Nova a lot, it didn't help that there was a cliffhanger. I'm still sad about it.

equarg I agree. I just hate it that whenever a story has a potentially cool or interesting villain, that villain would instead be replaced or outdone by a human enemy. What kind of idiot would want to hear a story about humans fighting dinosaurs anyways? Let's just have humans be the ultimate bad guy because that is always more interesting than giant carnivorous lizards! Ugh.

Great idea for a new series! I do remember watching a few episodes of Terra Nova but never got into enough to realise only one series was made. Based on the big budget and what the series was about, seems like it would have been better to have made the series into a few movies which could have made more money and got a much bigger audience.
I have a few suggestions for other Cancelled TV shows: Odyssey 5 (I watched the whole series at the time and was hoping we'd find out what caused Earths destruction but it was just left on a cliffhanger), Jake 2.0, Tru Calling, Firefly, My Name Is Earl, Dallas (2012-2014) and Stargate Universe.

Oh man, Flash Forward had one of the best season (er, series) finales ever. Also, that scene of the one guy jumping off a building is really creepy in hindsight, as that actor would end up killing himself in real life.

2021 Just started watching S1E1 and man oh man I now I’m gonna be disappointed again when I get to that finale...this show was and is still great!
I loved the show when it first premiered (still do), and like many, I was disappointed that it didn't get a second season. I *am* wanting to pick up the DVD with that motion comic. I for one would like some closure to the story.

yeah i loved it too. i started watching it late so when i saw that it was cancelled i stopped watching before i became to attached.
That being said i think i watched 10 episodes
Shows like Terra Nova, Flash Forward, Jericho, etc. are why I'm hesitant to invest my time in a new franchise. Once I see that the network is willing to commit three or four seasons, then maybe I'll binge watch it on Netflix. But if they're going to cancel it on a cliffhanger at the end of season one, it shows how little they care about the viewers who did give their show a chance.
fox is notorious for this though. this isn't the first absolutely great show they've canned after one season FIREFLY ANYONE? fox has this love hate thing with sci fi. they love it while it's the flavour of the month then they ditch it just as fast. it seems like fox was beting on dinosaur being the next big thing then superheros zombie and medieval fantasy shows were the in thing. yes a 4m budget was big but now thats the norm. hell stargate SGA and SGU were pushing 2-3m per episode if not more towards the end and they predated this series. i was super hyped for terranova when it came out. to me it was my next show after the void stargate left.

Cancelled is going to be an amazing series, I can feel it. Bright Sun Films, you never fail to impress me with interesting content other TH-camrs hardly cover :) As for a suggestion, how about the short lived 2015-2016 Muppets TV show? Or if you're interested in something with a more interesting history, then Muppets Tonight (1996-1998). Also, a famous one is Invader Zim (2001-2002; 2006)

Our family loved this, such a good show for adults and kids to watch together. One of the only shows we regularly watched as a family.
I loved this show! I'm new to your channel, came here via the Alcatraz video but that was hard to watch...sorry :-( Then I saw that vid was a year old. So came to check if you guys still made video's. Glad I did and that you guys didn't stop! 😁👍

Saw the show when it aired- had a lot of promise and the premiere ep was great. However, the writing deteriorated rapidly after that and it looked like they thought they could just add lots of special effects in the place of good plots and dialog. Didn't work.
Now that see that the writing staff was let go early on, the bad writing makes sense.
The shows got steadily worse but I watched until the bitter end, and wasn't at all surprised it got canceled.
Mlogan11 Exactly, well said. After the fourth episode that was it for me, a whiny baby son, troubled marriage and kids getting into trouble.....booooring
I like the idea for this new series. So many cancelled projects to talk about, and you're right, they don't really fit into the Abandoned series. If you're looking for some Abandoned ideas there are a few in East TN, Southwest VA and Western NC you might want to check out sometime.
Awesome work ! Loved that show too. Please do Forever, which was another good show cancelled after one season.
