      @@Boschwasherairfryer I’m aware! While fried chicken existed in SK for centuries prior to that, the dish evolved thanks to the influence of black GIs during the Korean War. And it’s evolved even further now thanks to the competitive nature of Korean fried chicken franchises, so while similar, Korean fried chicken and African-American fried chicken are now quite different. Both very good, ofc, but imo, nothing beats soy garlic fried chicken, which requires a different cooking technique and vastly different ingredients. But yes, you can definitely see (and taste!) the root of the inspiration for modern day Korean fried chicken!

    Black American soldiers durong WWII stationed in korea, during the Korean War, shared their fired chicken with their Korean compatriots. The koreans loved it, as frying chicken was an unpopular approach to consuming chicken. as a result some korean folk were influenced by the American fried appraoch, and began playing with this idea by giving it a korean approach in flavor and spices.

  • @ryanobray1

    I am a little confused by a couple comments from the U.S. participant. Maybe it varies some by geographical region but there's no shortage of places that offer sweet meat options as well as as more savory flavors that might include things like mustard. If you order chicken strips pretty much anywhere, they'll offer a variety of sauces options, including honey mustard. Maybe the idea was to speak mostly to mainstream fried chicken options like KFC and Popeyes offer?
    Although most Indian food is too earthy for my liking, tandoori and butter chicken are yummy. My main takeaway from this experiment is that I need to try Korean chicken. It looks delicious and the commentary speaks to my liking (not too oily, nice and moist etc.).
    Fun cultural experiment, thanks for sharing!

    • @ShainAndrews
      @ShainAndrews 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What you describe is NOTHING like what he is talking about, nor what they are eating. Americans think dipping a meat in a sauce is the same thing... And yes I have traveled the world, and spent a considerable amount of time in Seoul.

    • @ryanobray1
      @ryanobray1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@ShainAndrews Yet you couldn't have possibly interpreted my comment any more wrong. Did you actually watch the entire video before responding or did you decide to jump directly into trolling? All three participants literally described the Korean chicken as seeming more healthy and less oily as well as "wet" which I'm interpreting as being moist. The U.S. participant literally said that we don't really do sweet meats here or use flavors like mustard. I don't really agree with his assessment. There's plenty of diversity in how lots of people and restaurants prepare chicken across the U.S. The point of the dipping sauce comment wasn't to say that's somehow an equivalent cooking technique to what they were tasting in the experiment. It was simply to point out that it's a very common illustration of the fact that we do associate those kinds of flavors to chicken and other meats. I'll use crayons and big paper to explain the nuances of basic communication next time you feel the need to troll. Also, frankly I couldn't care less if you've traveled to Mars, your response is nonsensical.

    Korea's traditional chicken dishes are samgyetang and boiled chicken, which do not use any seasonings such as chili. The sauce for seasoned fired chicken includes red pepper paste, but most of the sauces are ketchup and syrup, making it a Western sauce.
    So that is not Korean food. And traditional Korean food does not contain chili at all.

    I am an Pakistani American. Korean fried chicken is my favorite hands down. Tandoori and American chicken is good, but that Korean BBQ sauce is amazing

      My hometown has Korean fried chicken place & I haven’t tried it yet but when I go in next, I intend to try it. We have lots of American food places in UK but they not allowed to use American chicken because of chlorinated
