- In this 1v1 Islands game I talk through the pros and cons of both Portuguese (DauT) and Vikings (Hera). I spent a large amount of time talking about how Vikings have so many incredibly early bonuses, but Portuguese do have a chance with their late game power! DauT fell so far behind and it just seemed impossible for him to ever come back.

T90 said, "Italians would perform better here because they get fast fire" but Seabratista in the chat made a good point. Fast fires still have to get close to fire so they stack well, and that is good for the caravels, so I would like to see that fight now, fast fire vs. caravels.
What I really came here to say is, I love that people are so analytical in this game. When I played Cities Skylines, I would always find things that people don't see, and I love seeing people like this so I can just sit back and chill, enjoy the game and other people do it for me. I love this game and I've never played competitively, but love to watch it.
I want to play so bad but I'm exactly like Fatslob, and I don't want to be the next Fatslob or a guy trying to be like him. I love the whole building the town, collecting the resources, upgrading and then rolling in like a bulldozer. In campaign, I will sit there till the enemy stops sending units, meaning they have cleaned the map of resources and then bulldoze. I love the game so much, I will make every game last as long as I can. I started playing back in the OG days, now it's just nostalgically fun.
Fires just don't stack like the galley line or longboats though, which is honestly really stupid given that they're the ship class which needs to be in proximity to the enemy to do damage. It's analogous to 40 crossbows cramming into a single tile where only two knights out of a group of 20 can actually damage them.
Try to play Caravel vs fast fire and you will find out that the fireships completely crush them. Even a castle can't protect you. It's almost like scorps vs knights in equal numbers. The arrows of the carevels will fly in different directions and the dps will drop significantly.
@@t.donerringer9816 Does completely make sense and I would agree. I was really bringing up the fact that I like that people care so much, they think about this stuff. I love this.
I remember just a year ago I was never a fire person, I never seen the benefit of them because campaign never sent them in mass, but when I started to watch T90, I seen the benefit of them and now, when on water, I don't use anything else, fires are kind of the king of water, imo
What is the fire ships weakness?
Fatslob is a pretty good player thou hes better then most, he plays so rogue-meta strat that if you havent seen it before its incredibly hard to counter if unprepared. Even semi-pros lost to fatslob in the past and he did the same thing for years, its a bit like the recent rogue-meta by F2F, its so out of the ordinary you get confused by it. Portugese have always been my fav civ, caravels when massed are so satisfying to use you just board wipe galleons even fastfires cant touch them when there atleast like 40 caravels

@@mightybatillo T90Official played an islands game and he unloaded some villagers on what he thought was his opponent's main island and built three archer ranges. But it wasn't. :)

You're probably correct if we assume Hera would use the opportunity to pressure him on land. But I don't think he would have done that.
Love to watch a game only to fall asleep to it, my brief slumber punctuated by T90's cries of anguish and bewilderment, before waking to the end result.

You have to appreciate the few times T90 takes a risk to make a prediction, even if he turns up to be wrong. This game was epic
i dont get why pros dont use portuguese in water maps in tournaments. If u resist the initial stages then it is impossible to lose with feitorias!
Not sure if sarcastic, but it's very possible to lose with feits. It's an unbalanced eco, and the buildings are fucking huge, you need a lot of space.
Feitoria means you can't shift position and you can't focus your resources to what your comp needs. It can be great, but it's far from unbeatable.
@@dimitrikemitsky he has a good point. If you survive and in post imp you have a good tranzition to feitoria+ some vills, is almost impossible to lose. You put some villages (usually wood) to gather some resources and you combine them with 2-5 feitorias and outlast the enemies. As an ultra marathoner i love loong games. Portuguesse for the win!

why do pros NEVER tower the shoreline? i understand the reluctance to spend your starting stone either than selling it or building TCs, but it feels like a single tower on that strait with all the docks could've done a ton of work
Maybe the assumption is that when playing another pro micro would render it pretty useless?
Towers become obsolete in the Castle Age if you don't have Arrowslits. Its better to spare that stone for Castles, which last way longer than towers.
I don't see why neither players tried to land units on the other island ? seems like a valid strategy with how few defenses are on land

@@anttikaikkonen1460 Daut's? On his twitch channel in recent broadcasts. It was Saturday's stream and I believe it was even the first game he played that evening. Maybe he'll upload it one day on TH-cam.
So what im getting from this is that Naval Civs are completely unbalanced because you either go Italians/Vikings or you just lose. Why is there no balance for water with at least a few Civs that are supposedly good at it? Its also another reason why I and im sure other players dont like Water maps at all.
It's true that there are less viable civs non water than on land but some picks (like Japanese/Malay) can compete with those twos, and others are viable too (more here th-cam.com/video/t87iMRVahhI/w-d-xo.html)
It's difficult to balance what is functionally a second game tacked on to the core experience. On maps like islands, a water bonus can only really be countered by a water bonus, or perhaps a really solid eco or generic production bonus. With a system like that, as soon as one water bonus is assigned, there can be no balance until every civ has one.

It seems like they could have raided eco a little harder the whole game. Can't build ships without eco. Just a small group of units smacking villagers would have been a great distraction. The huge naval battles didn't really do anything but drain the resources of both of them.
By just looking at this map generation looks like it would be an interesting match

Just finished watching that monster 7.5 hour game from a year ago... thank the lord I can understand vids running at 3x speed or else I wouldnt have been able to make it

Dude this map gave 3 HUGE benefits to daut.
1. Far better choke points along his coast es evidenced 18:37
2. Much more wood, which is critically important given the ending.
3. Much further inland building space, isolated from the coasts.
Hera should have won this.
They totally should have made a trade cog ship between the two adjacent enemy docks, just for the lulz XD

It always astonishes me why more players don't build towers and/or castles along the shorelines where possible. With the appropriate upgrades, they will devour ships like nothing.
Love you T90 and you’ve built the community back up from the ground, but how have you streamed this for so many years and still don’t know tech trees? Haha what is the Viper and Hera game with the fish traps? Have heard people talk about it so many times now and I missed it.

Its easy to be a back seat player, but either one of these players could had easy unloaded a handful of a couple dozen land units on the other's island and greatly disrupted their economy. Sad to see they didnt think of box besides a prolonged sea war.

I haven't played this game in forever and even I can tell there's zero reason to get loom in dark age when your villagers are extremely safe on an isolated island. Is the scout gonna swim over?

I can't work out why Koreans aren't at least considered on water, the 15% discount on wood cost and access to fires feels like it should put them in a really good position to be a halfway house between Vikings and the rest of the water meta-game and on top of that they have the fallback of mind games/tower rush. But they are never mentioned as a decent water civ. To put the Korean bonus into context the base cost of a galley is 120 wood and gold (and they're basically equivalent in value on a water map in feudal) then viking discount makes their ship cost 102 resources to Koreans 106 to generic 120 (fires cost the same but 75/45 so korean fires cost: 109 resource split a slight advantage as wood is in higher demand and gold has about an 10% faster income rate in feudal). I think not having a direct eco bonus obviously hurts them but I feel like what you get in terms of unit discount combined with versatility should at least put them in the conversation. I think that it's just that the Japanese bonus is better in the early game which is why Koreans don't get a look in as a wood saving civ - so it's only after 15 ships that the Korean bonus would payback compared to the cheap lumber/mining camps of the Japanese. I still think Koreans are worth thinking about on water or at least it wouldn't take a lot to make them viable - they feel like they need some love/buff, they've got absolutely no place in the current meta-game, at this point they're even only the third best tower rush civ or something.
