I have taken many road trips with my family and my father gave me an idea for smooth morning departures. When you are staying in a city, stay on the side of the city that you will be leaving from in the morning. Morning inbound traffic into the downtown business center won't slow you down. Example, if you are going on East I 10 to Florida and staying one night around Houston, stay on the east side so you can easily get out the next morning.
The roadside attractions (hidden gems) are a must!!! Best part of any road trip is seeing all the quirky/neat stuff you didn't know existed.
We use sites like Atlas Obscura to make sure we dont miss those things while travelling between locations.
Hidden gems... you should make a channel that focus just on hidden gems ;)

Don't forget to use the bathroom while you can, especially before entering city limits where there could be traffic jams, and watch your caffeine intake lol

Call me crazy but I am a strict planner with roadtrips. Printed maps, timing goals, activity ideas (including things in the middle of nowhere if a leg stretch is needed!) for each and every inch of the road, and don’t forget playlists that are fitting for each area. I overplan so that I can make the best of my timing since my vacation time and funds are limited. I know it’s weird 😂
That is the best way. I don't trust GPS, I know too many people who have been mislead. I look over my route by map before I get on the road.

Don't allow yourselves to run out of windshield washing fluid. You never know when you're going to run into a bug storm.

Yes! That is one of those top up the fluids thing. Worst experience with nasty weather at night and no fluid. Scary situation
If there's something that you or members of your family really want to see. Stop and see it. Don't say will stop next time because maybe there will not be a next time. I made that mistake with Mammoth Caves National Park back when I was on the road. I passed the turnoff numerous times thinking well I'll stop and see it next time but eventually I ran out of next times.
Don't get distracted driving and make sure not to drive when tired. Too many car accidents happen because people are distracted or tired.

It is a good idea to stay updated on weather conditions, as you are traveling on the road. You don't want to drive when there's heavy rain, hail, tornadoes, or other poor conditions that would make driving hazardous.

Great advice. We never leave on time and we just got our oil changed. We also set time aside for attractions. You all were spot on.

Hi, I’m from Belgium and travelled Route 66 from Chicago to LA. That was the best road trip I have ever taken. Man, USA is sooo beautiful. We are planning to come to the US again when the pandemic is over.
it is a fun road trip. We are looking at driving it this fall again with the kids. Hope we can stop by and make videos at some of your favorite stops
Great video. In July we went from FL to Great Smoky Mtn Natl Park, to Daniel Boone Forest in KY, to Nashville TN, to Huntsville AL, then back to FL. 6 days. Explore the USA!

Great video! Thanks for crucial driving advice that applies to driving all the time, not just road trips: Use your blinker! Don't cut people off! Don't tailgate! (I added that last one). Why endanger yourself and others? Just don't.

As a tourist, I don't have anything against any state troopers/police but I found some in Georgia state to be very sneaky and to a small extent unfair. I remember driving the I-95 from Jacksonville to Savannah on holiday and one of the troopers fined me some super speeder fine (ridiculous infringement) for overtaking a road-train which was spitting up small stones
*_Avoid national fast-food chains_* - I noticed the Chick-fil-A nuggets on your dash. 😂 I guess it's OK to break the rule if you hit up a national if it's in its home state.
*_Traffic Complainer_* - One friend constantly complains about traffic in our regular life so occasionally he'll end up in my vehicle on a road trip and like clockwork start *****ing about city traffic. I immediately put an end to it. "Dude. No worries, man. We're not in the office. It's a beautiful day and in 7 hours were going to be pitching tents!" Rule #1 - Don't let the complainers even get started. 😂

@Wolters World Food from its place of origin always tastes better to me (psychological influence) but having been to Atlanta a million times, I never noticed Chick-fil-A nuggets tasting better in Georgia. 😂😂
Or if you see you're approaching a city and it's going to be during the stop hour. Consider making a stop before you get to the city to visit something for an hour or two.

Bringing your own drinks definitely saves money. Also when stopping before you need gas, look for a newer, bigger gas station/convenience store, because the bathrooms are usually pretty clean.
Great list!!! We do about all of what you said. We travel by car a lot and do tons of road trips. We love it!
Actually, in our travels and personal experiences, the Carolina’s are actually 2 of the best states of those who stay in the correct lanes or at least will be in the left lane and get over if you come up on them, lol. The worst violators, by far: Florida and Connecticut. When they’re in the left lane, they refuse to get over. Not sure why those 2 states are as stubborn about hogging the fast lane and simply will not get over, lol. Too, your thing about keeping your eye on the gas needle is on point. We also go to the bathroom every time we pull over, no matter what. We started that rule when our kids were young and still do it, lol.

AAA premier (worth every penny!) also has a FREE battery replacement service. I’ve used this and it saved the day. Also gas is best pumped at night when it’s cooler ( or early morning) due to expansion. Happy travels

Thank goodness we don't have those distances in the Uk, but we do have heavier traffic.
Also do eye exercises when driving, especially if you are unfortunate to have occasional vertigo.
Mark and (?), I just left a suggestion on an old video (Biggest mistakes tourists make . . ). One you just mentioned again here--about the GPS backup. It always used to be in BSP (before smartphones) days that people would bring along a road atlas to find their way. The nice thing about that is while you're following your planned route, you may see that some spot you've heard about is within 25 miles of the Interstate, or soon will be, but is too far off the route to show up on the phone map. I always bring along a Rand McNally Road Atlas to avoid that situation.
I find the Kappa North America Road Atlas is great for planning and backs up the GPS.
I love your videos!!!!!! Thank god you have a Ford vehicle because its a sturdy car for cross country roadtrips.
Totally agree about left lane drivers. I think some of them think they’re enforcing the speed limit or something. They can see the parade of frustrated drivers behind them. Why don’t they move over? What they do is force passing traffic to the right, creating an unsafe traffic pattern.
oh i know those people. they camp out next to a semi and just sit there like they are saving the world or something... when all they are doing is causing heart attacks :)
Went on a road trip last summer with my two sisters. It was a lot of fun but when you have one sister that gets up at 7am and another sister that's dragging along and doesn't want to get going until 9-10am, it's frustrating. At least all three of us showered the night before and that's something I would highly recommend doing if you're going on a road trip.
Thank you so much for the advisory to not be a left lane bandit. A lot of people, ruin a lot of other people's days, by being a rolling, left lane traffic jam.

Yes Bojangles lol. We just got to try Bojangles for the first time about a week ago and it’s amazing 😂 yum! It’s a good thing there isn’t one near our house, or we would be there way too often. Yum!
In my case, the most important is: don't forget the motion sickness medication
Another road trip down, when booking a hotel at the spur of the moment, don’t forget to Google the hotel name and bedbugs to make sure there haven’t been any recent bedbug reports. And always check your hotel room thoroughly.
My wife and I went on a trip from Tacoma, WA to Choco Canyon and didn't think about the spare tire until we got on the really nasty road to the national park. It turned out we didn't have one, which made for an anxiety ridden last couple of miles.
Also, as a trucker I concur with the cutting us off. Especially those of us hauling doubles and triple. It's hard to keep the wiggle wagons straight when I suddenly have to slam on the brakes.
S E I find most truckers to be extremely safe drivers. Their financial well-being depends on their rig. They’re not going to risk it doing something stupid. A truck has huge blind spots. I try to give them a break and let them merge and change lanes when needed.
Always have to eat at a Bojangles at least once when in the Eastern TN/Western NC area.
Do make sure your GPS is updated with the latest maps and roadside info - such as addresses for hotels/restaurants etc as those places do come and go or change names frequently. Or better yet use an app such as google maps or waze which gnerally have crowd sourced info such as traffic congestion and road closures and even speed traps...
"Don't forget to get off the highway" should say "just don't get on the highway!" Especially in the Southwest & West the backroads are just as quick and much more interesting, cool little towns & great scenery.
I travel solo so I might do things a little differently. I always plan my trips, whether it's a road trip in my own car or a rental in a city I've flown into, that I am at my hotel by dark. I'm a senior so it's important that I'm not out trying to read road signs, looking at my GPS or even directions I've printed out when it's dark.
Also AAA will print out a Trip Tik for their members. A Trip Tik gives you directions, gas stations, hotels and road conditions along your route. It's best to get one from your local AAA office about a week or less from the day you're leaving so it's the most current.
Recognize that freeway signs differ area to area. Example, in Northern Calif, many freeway signs show what restaurants and stores are off the next exit. However, many signs in Southern Calif don't have that.
Wolters World you are so lucky you live in the states, I always want to do one there, you have endless road trip possibilities. While I’m glad to live in Ireland, there is so many routes really, after this madness is over I’d love to do one around mainland Europe or US.

Agreed on not being in a hurry. I just got back from a weekend glamping in a camper van and I spent half of it taking in the scenic beauty.
My advice for a road trip is this: always have a good dash cam and radar detector.
* Dash cams are cheap and any will do, but spend the extra $20 and get one with either a battery backup or a rear camera. The exception to that is if you're me with limo tint in back and the camera looks like midnight at high noon. Lol
* Radar detectors can be cheap, but you get what you pay for. You don't need a Valentine One V2, Escort Max 360, or Uniden R7. Those are awesome but geared toward supercars and road rallying with apps to control them from a phone or tablet and set up speed trap alerts. The exception is the V2 which is invisible to Virginia's radar detector detection technology, as detectors are a crime in Virginia. I love my Uniden R3, but a Cobra Rad 480i or Radenso XP is just as good for less than half the money of the big boys. And it'll pay for itself in one ticket.

Hey Mark and Jocelyn! Love this vid. This brought back so many memories of getting up at 4am for family road trips in our station wagon. My dad didn't like taking long stops because he wanted to "make good time."

Crusing in the Left Lane is allowed both in NY and ND, and remember bicycles are allowed on the interstate in North Dakota.

SO TRUE!! We have a rule on "dont over do it" in fulltime travel 3 or 3... 3pm stop, 300 miles... also to make sure we dont miss out on cool things like that superman!
Theres also the 2-2-2 RV rule of 2pm 200 miles and stay 2 days to enjoy the place.
Most of the time now we look at stopping around 6 or 7pm (pre covid). Then we have a room, can swim in the pool, grab dinner, and get a goods nights rest.
@@woltersworld yeah our earlier stop time is mostly due to not wanting to back the RV in and setup in dark! Later is definitely doable for AirBnBs and Hotel.

AAA is a joke now. I had them since I started driving 28 years ago and finally ended my membership this year. The lack of trip tics and maps was bad enough, but being charged for passport photos was the last straw. Most sites now recommend using your auto insurance companies road side assistance or not electing anything.
the only reason I have them is for the discounts on hotels

I second what he said about GPS. Take a look at a paper map or at least look at the suggested alternates on the web version of Google maps because you might find that you can swing by some state park or something interesting or at least a stretch of road you haven't been on without tanking your average speed. The longer the trip the more dramatic this is. You'd be surprised how little different it makes on a 1500 mile drive to take quite a different sent of roads and maybe even states. I use this to avoid some really tedious roads like almost any part of I-80, I-65 or I-95.
A good pnw fast food suggestion is burgerville.
When my 2 younger daughters went to college in South Florida one time I drove from Brunswick Geogia to northern nj. 950 miles. What was I.hinking.
Most mechanic's shops will give your car a once over for free or for a very small charge. Get them to check: Battery, brakes, fluids, tires and windshield wipers. Best to be safe!

Keep in mind that due to the pandemic rest stops may be closed such as in California. Rush hour traffic may not be as big a concern during the pandemic I’ve noticed. Lot less traffic.
We just got back from Illinois, went to see our son off to the army. I don't take the interstate if I can help it, I take 36 across just because I don't like driving the Nebraska interstate and I like taking the road less traveled, my sister makes fun off me for it because when they travel they want to fly and just get from point A to point B BORING. I must admit that I've seen enough corn and soybean fields for a while. I split the driving with my son, he got us lost in St. Joseph using his phone to navigate so I made him drive thru the big cities so I could navigate using my map and identifying road signs. He needs the experience anyway he's only 17 so hopefully he learned a few things. I had to drill it into his head to pay attention to the signs and he learned real quick that there's no service for his phone when you want to use it most sometimes. Especially when companies have phone wars😉.
Tips for solo road trips! Ones that are more than 24h?
Maybe it's just me, but I get worry about your health, when I see all your unhealthy snacks (and not only in this video). Since you want to be a family friendly channel, maybe it would be a good idea to promote healthy food? You could easily bring some fruits in your cooler bag. And non salty almonds and other nuts are also good options for snacks. Also, an alternative to fast food along the road, could be to stop at local farmers markets to provide more healthy food, and to support local farmers.
We had a part on the healthy food part, but the sound was really bad.
I thought that the "forgetness" of using the blinker was a Brazilian exclusive problem.

rules for my friends road trips are ,
1. pray before you go for safety and those on the road don't over eat to the point you get the shoots,
2, always go to the bathroom before the 5 hour road trip
3. if you fart, open a window,
4, don't freak out the driver,
5, always have am980 to check the traffic
6. after 3 hours we usually stop for 40 mins if we leave in the mid afternoon, closer to Toronto the worse the traffic
7. Drinks like water, have healthyish food .
8. always have Bismuth

Distances are so long in USA. From Belgium I only have a few hundred kilomètres to go to be everywhere in Europe (biggest trips I remember was with my parents when we used to go to Portugal).
