  • Tanis Emmett shows you how to use an over bustle. For a free consultation for wedding dress alterations in Ontario, call 905-604-7477.
At Tanis Emmett Wedding Style, we recommend bustles on a case by case basis, but we primarily use two types of bustles - the over bustle and under bustle. The over bustle is primarily used for ballgown wedding dresses with full layers of tulle or chiffon. The under bustle is primarily used for fit and flare gowns and wedding dresses and does not change the look of the dress when it's time to bustle. We recommend leaving your train down for the ceremony's grand entrance or procession and some portraits but bustling your train before the reception so wedding guests don't accidentally step on your dress and so that you can enjoy your first dance as a married couple.

THANK YOU SO MUCH. I am altering wedding dress for friends' daughter and thought I knew how to do the bustle. But it is double layer illusion train as well as 2 layers of underskirt which needs bustle too.
SO YOU HAVE BEEN A TOTAL LEGEND. Couldn't have done this with out you.

Thanks so much. I just bustled my granddaughters wedding gown and it was a heavy skirt. Be sure to say that you had to add the hooks etc yourself. This had nothing except the loop on the innermost layer. Thanks for sharing!!

Does this apply to all wedding dresses? Do all tailors put those loops/hooks like that?

Did you stitch all the tulle layers together when you added the stitch?

You can do it one of two ways! Sometimes, I like to separate the layers by bustling the heavy underlayers as an under bustle underneath. Then, I will take the softer layers and do an over bustle to create a softer flow. The other way, is you can bustle all the layers together but that can create a heavier look depending on the style of dress.
