treasure island music festival 10.14.12 set list: bridges and balloons soft as chalk have one on me sapokanikan in california cosmia thrilled.tumblr.com
This song is so incredible. Her best lyrics ever in my opinion, even though there's not a unanimous transcription of all of them. I have so many thoughts and feelings about this song but one thing I think of is how she refers to a "hunter" one hundred years from now, rather than another scholar or something like that, and a hunter in a public park no less... kind of sounds like society has dissolved 100 years from now.
"My one wish is to get over to the western front, where I can do some work that will count." That's a quote from John Purroy Mitchel and the lyric's pretty much a direct reference to it, hence: "where my work might count"
joanna's new album has been announced! 'divers' is out october 23rd 2015! first single is this very song, entitled "sapokanikan" and there's a video directed by paul thomas anderson!
The cause is Ozymandian. The map of Sapokanikan is sanded and bevelled, the land lorn and levelled by some unrecorded and powerful hand which plays along the monument and drums upon a plastic pan. The brave men and women so dear to God and famous to all of the ages ran.
So we all raise a standard to which the wise and honest so may repair, to which a hunter, a hundred years from now, may look and despair and see with wonder the tributes we have left to rust in the parks, swearing that our hair stood on end to see John Purroy Mitchel depart for the Western front where work might count. O mercy! O God! God, I will the hunter to decipher the stone, and what lies under the city is done. So look and despair. Look and despair.
Sang: "Do you love me? Will you remember?" The snow falls above me. Around the hand, the rerounders. The event is in the hand of God. Beneath a patch of grass, her bones the old Dutch master hid. While elsewhere Tobias and the angel disguise what the scholars surmise was a mother and kid.
and the records they left are cryptic, at best lost in obsolescence the text will not yield, nor x-ray reveal with any fluorescence where the head of the master begins and ends.
Oh excellent! I hadn't compared the poem myself and its been years since I read it (in school). I copied the lyrics from another page. Otherwise they seem to have done great work. Again, thanks for pointing out that very important correction.
This is amazing!! I hope she releases this to the public soon! Her new hair cut is so cute. Ahh this is such a nice song! She reminds me of Kate Bush and Joni Mitchell a bit in here. :)
Interred with other daughters, in dirt in other potters' fields above them, parades mark the passing of days through parks where pale colonnades arch in marble and steel, where all of the twenty-thousand attending your foot fall and the causes they died for are lost in the idling bird calls, and the records they left are cryptic at best, lost in obsolescence. The text will not yield, nor x-ray reveal with any fluorescence where the hand of the master begins and ends.
I fell, I tried to do well but I won't be. Go tell the one that I love to remember and hold me. I call, I call for the doctor but the snow swallows me whole with ol' Flory Walker (?) and the event lives only in print. He said: "It's alright," and "It's all over now," and boarded the plane, his belt unfastened; the boy was known to show unusual daring. And, called a “boy”, this older man, confounding Tammany Hall, In whose employ King Tamanend himself preceeded John’s fall.
this creature is made of stardust. incredible, so are we all. although we have no clue where we are going, and there is all these sadness in the world, art, true art is so important.
3:17 - "In whose employ King Tommen and himself preceded John's fall." Is she singing about Game of Thrones now? I suppose if anyone can get away with it, it's her.
Funny, I didn't know someone who likes listening to a grown woman sing like a 3-year-old could insult my intelligence, let alone judge my intelligence by my taste in music.

This will forever be the best performance of this song
This might be blasphemy but I honestly greatly prefer it to the album version.
YeahyeahyeahOK
@@ReelMan729 I love you!
I know I would get along well with everyone here who completely understands why this is f-cking amazing.
It's pretty amazing how quiet the audience is for a festival. It's like everyone is just in awe.

+Ian Grahame spanakopita
Had no idea I would come to love this song so much when I first heard her play it at this festival I was like yaaaawwwwnnnn
I love all music from Joanna Newsom, but I always need a dictionary to define some of her lyrics because I'm a dumbass.
Do you think John Purroy Mitchel would be flattered by this song? I would be.
love the chord progression in the end...
3 years in the making
Oh, she is brilliant. :) Inspiring and devastating at the same time.
I was about 15 feet back from the front of the audience and yeah, it was totally silent except for her. Beautiful!
"... depart for the western front, where work might count..."
This is making my life right now.
Ugh! The lyrics are perfect, the music is perfect. love love love
This was such a great show. Happy i finally got to see Joanna shred \m/
i can't handle it..
i can't fucking handle it..
SO GOOD

wonderful, can't wait to hear more of the new material!
im crying
this is really fucking good. I'm super hyped for her new lp, whenever that's coming.
okay I love you :3 thank you so much, if it had been me I would have fainted so thank you for not fainting
Thank you so much!

Look and despair.
I totally agree! And it seems to me that they all wake from the trance at 4:27 when they scream and applause. It almost gets me in tears :')
I know! I'm so glad someone was responsible enough to do this. I just kind of stood there in a trance, unable to do anything.

i love her new bangs. she looks like 22 year old joanna again.
Oh excellent! I hadn't compared the poem myself and its been years since I read it (in school). I copied the lyrics from another page. Otherwise they seem to have done great work. Again, thanks for pointing out that very important correction.
I'm so loving the ending
joanna. jOANNA. JOANNAAAAA
you love me! cause i brought the concert to you!
This song alone leads me to assume her next album might be even better than the others...
thought it was unlikely, still marvelous.
To be fair she had these bangs back in '04.
Fan transcriptions guess she is saying "king Tamanend", see more info at wikipedia, interesting stuff
best birthday present EVER
Wooo. New Joanna Newsom. Thanks for sharing! :-)
Joanna draws a civilized crowd.
Good to see your intelligence is in keeping with your name.
Praise the music lords.
Holy fuck. I love this song and the other new one. Joanna is better than ever
This is amazing!! I hope she releases this to the public soon! Her new hair cut is so cute. Ahh this is such a nice song! She reminds me of Kate Bush and Joni Mitchell a bit in here. :)
It should be, The land lone and levelled. As the last line of the Ozymandian reads "The lone and level sands stretch far away"

please. come back to the light. seriously i hope you don't think that...
haha whoaaaaaa chilll
You can. It is "for the Western front where my work might count".
OMG. She cut her hair shorter and got bangs again! Ahhh, she's so different now.
i got your back, bb
Agreed!
Same thing happens at every live show I've been to. c:
Happy birthday to the Mozart of our day!
this creature is made of stardust. incredible, so are we all. although we have no clue where we are going, and there is all these sadness in the world, art, true art is so important.
oh but there ARE people there. You can hear cheer at 4:25
3:17 - "In whose employ King Tommen and himself preceded John's fall."
Is she singing about Game of Thrones now? I suppose if anyone can get away with it, it's her.

It's King Tamanend.
Awesome detective work! Where did you see that quote?
FUCK YEAH
you rock and you are so lucky and i kinda hate you but i love you?
Sapokanikan.
Funny how few realize the manson connection. Charlie that is.
Eh?
@@Hamishamishamishamish I don't remember... 9 years ago. You're just now seeing this!?
@@amwinters haha yeah sorry only just found this performance of Sapokanikan and your comment made me think 🤔
I love this song, although I tend to enjoy her harp work more than her piano work. I still think it's great though.

Or not many people are even there.
Hah. What?! Like 10 people.

@WhiskeyTango12 funny how when you bring up intelligence you start using proper grammar... Lol

Must see her before I die!
