Divers is kind of uninspired if compared to Ys or Have one on Me. But both of those albums could be the best of each decade. Have One On me specially, this album is perfect
@@not_emerald what do you mean by uninspired? I don't agree, especially when it comes to the construction and deliver of lyrics. I think she was very inspired and it was inspiring for me (even though I am not a lyricist) watching the explanation she gave to Seth Meyers about her creative process for this last album of hers.
@@myJDside most of the instruments in Divers, except for her harp and piano, felt forced into the music. Yeah, her lyrics were good (even though I believe they peaked in Have one on Me), and the cyclical concept of the album was very interesting, but seemed to me as if she took herself too seriously as a composer, when at the end of the day, she's just a singer-songwriter (one of the best, actually, but still not more than that). Saying Divers was her worst album isn't saying it's bad, by the way. I still enjoy it.
Holy shit, this BAND. I love Joanna herself, but the depth, flavours and colours that each of the individuals in the ensemble here adds is just amazing. Truly unique.
I was there, and we were all blessed to hear this song played twice. Apparently, they were unsatisfied with the first recording. I thoroughly enjoyed it both times.
Making the violinists play beer bottles, this alone could speak a lot about the unstandard creativity of whoever misterminded this. Overall, what a thoughtful employment of instruments and musicians to frame this gem of a genius piece of music!
Joanna is brilliant and a true musical genius. She's one of my favorite artists. Her complexity is mind-boggling. She seems as sweet as the most delectable chocolate.
One of the most perfect songs and performances I've ever heard Joanna does everything well, and she shows off by giving us another piece of art, supported by talented musicians, it excites us and fills us with color, and with her voice, her charm and her lyrics full of poetry she conquers our hearts once again
I have the same appreciation for this song. So many amazing lines. Just when I thought there wasn't a new way to arrange the 12 notes - life has a way of spacing these remarkable songs across the years to keep us coming back, and finding another performance to listen to 10 times in a row on a random Saturday morning.
@@cooporlando I speak English, not perfect, because I am not a native speaker, but unless I can have a conversation very well, and listening to Joanna since almost 20 years ago, gave me so much more vocabulary and expressions, that even are unknown for people that have English as first language, she is a true artists, in all the ways possible
@@samsepiol4761I'm always going to the dictionary when I'm checking her lyrics. But English is also not my first language, I don't know if native speakers feel the same way.

So... just got home and WOW! Have a great time; Joanna was amazing. OH! And she played for just short of 2 hours. I can post the setlist here if you'd like. Let me know. I don't want to spoil it for you. I personally don't like knowing what's going to be played beforehand. :D
Twenty miles left to the show. Hello, my old country. Hello. Stars are just beginning to appear, and I have never, in my life, before been here. And it's my heart, not me, who cannot drive, at which conclusion you arrived, watching me sit here, bolt upright, and cry for no good reason at the Eastering sky. And the tilt of this strange nation, and the will to remain for the duration (waving the flag, feeling it drag). Like a bump on a bump on a log, baby; like I'm in a fistfight with the fog, baby; step, ball-change, and a-pirouette! I've been 'fessing, double-fast, addressing questions nobody asked. I'll get this joy off of my chest, at last, and I will love you till the noise has long since passed. I did not mean to shout, Just drive, Just get us out, dead or alive. The road's too long to mention - Lord, it's something to see! -laid down by the Good Intentions Paving Company, all the way to the thing we've been playing at, darling. I can see that you're wearing your staying-hat, darling. For the time being, all is well. Won't you love me a spell? Well, I saw straightaway that the lay was steep, but I fell for you, honey, easy as falling asleep. And that, right there, is the course I keep. And no amount of talking is going to soften the fall, but, like after the rain, step out of the overhang. That's all. And I do hate to fold, right here, at the top of my game, when I've been trying with my whole heart and soul to stay right here, in the right lane. But it can make you feel over, and old (Lord, you know it's a shame), when I only want for you to pull over, and hold me, till I can't remember my own name.
I must’ve commented on this video a dozen times over the years. It is the single greatest live performance I’ve ever seen and I wasn’t even there. I’ve watched this video a minimum of 500 times. All other music pales in comparison to JNew. We are lucky to be alive at the same time during this blip in history.
this so is so, sooo good. the lyrics are poetically so rich and fit so well with the melody the trombone solo in the end is so beautiful. OMG just perfect
She has such a wonderful connection with her music. She doesn't play because she has too, she plays because it is as much a part of her as breathing. This is why so many can attach themselves to her work emotionally.
I always used to think this was a (very bittersweet) song about leaving someone and having regrets, but now I’m starting to think it’s about sticking around. Given how much it seems to affect people (me included), I wondered what anyone else’s take on the lyrics are? (since we can all agree that the music and performance are sublime!)
It makes more sense in the context of the whole album....a rollercoaster of emotions from Easy and '81 (😊) to Does Not Suffice (😢😢😢), with this being one of the more important stops on the journey.
her face expression between 5.30 and 5.35 is so cute that i forgot to listen to the words she sang. i had to play it again and - guess what - i was stuck exact at the same moment... damn you, pretty girl ^^
So crazy how people can so easily dismiss a female artist even one who's genius is so apparent. Joanna Newsoms work is an embarrassment of riches and still she gets no credit. I don't get it
This is one of the greatest songs ever written. I am in awe.
There’s absolutely nothing else in the world like this song.
I have a feeling Have One on Me and Divers will be considered classics 30 years from now just like The Dreaming and Hounds of Love are now
EXFUCKINGZACTLY

The violins. That harmony is other-wordly.

I like how Joanna pays attention to him in the trombone moment. It's like she's proud of him

The most beautiful " Darlin' " I've ever heard in my life 2:30
“ I regret how I said to ya honey just open your heart, even when I have trouble just opening a honey jar “
This is better than the studio version. Her clever lyrics come to life with the live performance.
This is just magical. Too good.
Totally agree. Pure, melodic magic.
Every time I see her do this song she sings a different part in the harmony, and every time it sounds like it's been the melody all along. God damn it
Every time I listen to the recorded version it makes me want to hear the outro on this version.
One of the best things America has produced.........
DAMN.. i have been a fan for like 10 years.. but dude comin back and seeing that this shit is still fucking amazing.. joanna newsom is a legend
We still here my guy
On the strength of hearing 2 songs , I bought her back catalogue...... Remarkable talent, very addictive.
This is truly one of my favorite live performances EVER. I always come back to it.
The self restraint of the drummer not breaking out into a heavy drum solo on such a groovy tune
Wow. “Have one on me” is such an incredible piece of music.

how does she get thru her songs without crying
