    Somehow despite having heard the other three seasons so so so much, I had never heard Autumn until now. What I've been missing out on! The drunken playing is the best part!! So masterfully done by the soloist here, wow!!!

    Such a surprising, intriguing and totally masterful presentation of Vivaldi’s genius. I honestly think that the drunk playing is unique. And maybe the most challenging part for a musician who naturally plays divinely.

    Ah, the old musical warhorse - Vivaldi's Seasons. NBS truly rediscovers the essence of these pieces washed out by countless renditions - not trying to be "original" in interpretation, but showing a degree of artistic taste and freedom that only consummate masters are allowed to attempt - with perfect success. Learn how the music should be heartfelt before and while it is played! A landmark performance that deserves to be known way better - the number of views is abysmally low...

    And again, Vivaldi's sonnet:
    Allegro
    Celebrates the peasant, with songs and dances,
    The pleasure of a bountiful harvest.
    And fired up by Bacchus' liquor,
    many end their revelry in sleep.
    Adagio molto
    Everyone is made to forget their cares and to sing and dance
    By the air which is tempered with pleasure
    And (by) the season that invites so many, many
    Out of their sweetest slumber to fine enjoyment
    Allegro
    The hunters emerge at the new dawn,
    And with horns and dogs and guns depart upon their hunting
    The beast flees and they follow its trail;
    Terrified and tired of the great noise
    Of guns and dogs, the beast, wounded, threatens
    Languidly to flee, but harried, dies.

    Great interpretation!
    The purists, who think it is not appropriate to use out-of-tune playing and a bit of acting, should read the sonnets that accompany the piece. It is easy to find the translation for the Allegro part:
    Allegro
    The peasant celebrates with song and dance the harvest safely gathered in.
    The cup of Bacchus flows freely, and many find their relief in deep slumber.
    I think, the soloist did a great job in illustrating the second line here.

    I know nothing about classical music, so I ask this to someone that knows about this. Why there were moments where they sounded out of tune, for example, at 1:07?

    • @rayw2981
      @rayw2981 5 ปีที่แล้ว +86

      That is a good question. I am a big fan of Netherlands Bach Society - but those passages struck me as odd. Interestingly, the Four Seasons concertos are accompanied by sonnets that explicate the music's message. The passage beginning at 1:07 is accompanied by the text "E del liquor de Bacco accesi tanti" or "The cup of Bacchus flows freely". I think the dissonance here is how the artist chooses to represent the drunkeness inferred from the text.

    • @janovewaldner1
      @janovewaldner1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      @@rayw2981 You're right. I checked the sonnets and your explanation makes total sense. I agree with your dissonance idea. Although I saw other versions and they made it more in tune, I have no problem with this version now that I know the reference. I'm not a purist so I appreciate each artist's own interpretation. Thanks for your time explaining.

      Da italiano (come credo sia tu) mi stavo chiedendo anche io una cosa del genere, anche se forse, ottimisticamente, da un altro lato: e cioè, "come mai si può fare con Vivaldi e non con altri?". Del resto l'improvvisazione era parte dello stile italiano, forse più che nel rigido organistico nord Europa; è in un certo senso ammissibile qualche ghiribizzo operistico, a volte addirittura obbligatorio) vedasi il secondo movimento di tutte le Stagioni, Autunno a parte, con quelle melodie ridotte al minimo. Trovo molto bella l'idea dell'ubriaco (1:06) che stona, sbaglia tempo e alla fine cade e sogna. Certo, capisco che ci sia chi lo possa trovare volgare.

    • @Orfeus80
      @Orfeus80 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@gianninick thanks for your interesting reply. I'm not Italian but I understood everything you said. It's a fine line I think, how much improvisation is too much? I think Vivaldi composed a lot of characteristics in his music, he described nature with every detail. I'm also aware that playing out of tune on purpose was an ornament and I'm ok with that. However, I think If he wanted so much extra caricature, he would have composed or indicated it.

      De tekst die in de oorspronkelijke partituur staat bij de Herfst begint zo (in Nederlandse vertaling):
      "Met zang en dans viert de boer / het geluk van de overvloedige oogst.
      Het vocht van Bacchus vloeit rijkelijk / en velen eindigen in een diepe slaap."
      Shunske Sato heeft de dronkenschap kennelijk willen imiteren. Over het resultaat kun je van mening verschillen.... Italiaanse uitvoeringen in de tijd van Vivaldi werden overigens door o.a. de Fransen als "extreem en ongecontroleerd" beoordeeld. Deze uitvoering is ook extreem te noemen.

    • @LiselotteSels
      @LiselotteSels 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, dat werpt misschien een nieuw licht op de uitvoering, maar dan zou ik dat er echt wel bij vermelden, en ook het publiek op de hoogte brengen bij live uitvoering... En dan nog vind ik dat je wel losjes en extatisch kan spelen maar qua intonatie binnen de grenzen van welvoeglijke kan blijven. Of er net nog extremer overgaan, en dan ook als ensemble wel duidelijk maken dat het allemaal intentioneel is, want dat lijkt als ik de videobeelden interpreteer nu toch niet het geval te zijn. Wat Fransen extreem en ongecontroleerd noemden in die tijd, zou ik eigenlijk ook niet meteen gelijkstellen met vals, maar eerder met passioneel, spontaan en misschien wat slordig, in het referentiekader van de wellicht galante en keurige (?) Fransen die de kans hadden om daarvan getuige te zijn.

      Ik ben het met je eens: zonder verwijzing naar de genoemde tekst komt het nogal vreemd over. In het algemeen ben ik een heel grote fan van de uitvoeringen van de Nederlandse Bachvereniging, maar de uitvoering van de Vier Jaargetijden heeft mijn voorkeur niet, vanwege de grote overdrijvingen van de solist. Hier verkies ik zonder meer de - ook heel pittige - uitvoering van Janine Jansen. th-cam.com/video/zzE-kVadtNw/w-d-xo.html

      Ik ben bij deze Live uitvoering aanwezig geweest in de grote kerk in Kampen. Daar heeft Shunske Sato inderdaad verteld dat het de bedoeling is om dronkenschap na te bootsen. Bij de "verzengende hitte in de zomer met veel stekende zonnestralen en irritante insecten riep hij het publiek zelfs op om te zuchten en insecten dood te slaan". Na afloop van het concert heb ik nog even met Shunske Sato gesproken, het is naar mij idee een man het veel humor. Het is ook een stuk wat je live moet meemaken met de uitleg van Shunske erbij.

      Oh come on....Shunsuke Sato is doing his research thoroughly. He's a true artist and sounded like a real drunken lad. Such exciting playing!

    Was Vivaldi a drunk who played in a Tavern? I don't think so! I think that the dangerous here are SOME "period Interpreters" who really only performs what lives in their minds! Or musicians who becomes conductor too soon. And the adequate approach too.
    And I want to point out that my speciality is not Vivaldi but Bach. But since Vivaldi died on the same day as the Master...a gratitude at least.
    Moreover: between new and mediocre there is a space. No one virtuous as Vivaldi would play this «thing» here; it's a big lack of respect indeed.
    And if Sato is also virtuous, here he is on someone else's work, but the other is Vivaldi, and *playing* like this, is 100% inconceivable, shame on you.
    He does something similar on Bach, but without the courage to go that far... the Master obliges! But usually he invents on Bach's score, and for «Inventionen» Bach himself is more than enough! Bach dispenses with interpreters - he even wrote it, through Birnbaum 1736-1738. But Bach is another theme.

      These interpretations are dangerous? How so? That is a ridiculous statement.
      You may not like this interpretation, which is perfectly fine, you may even comment about disliking it, but calling it "lacking respect" or "shameful" or anything along those lines is not it. It is not for you, but not everything has to be. Maybe move on with your life instead of commenting "See my post" under every other comment here.
      Vivaldi's intention with the four seasons was to convey certain scenes (for example: the drunk, the feast, and the hunt in Autumn). I'd argue no interpretation does that as well as this one. Was Vivaldi a drunk? Probably not. Did he try to convey a drunk musically? Yes.
      Also, in the Baroque period it was extremely common that musicians/composers reworked the compositions of others, usually as a way of respect. Why shouldn't a modern musician be allowed the same liberties?
