Surf’s Up is probably one of my favorite animated movies of the late 2000s. Each character had their own presence in this film, Cody was a great main character and Chicken Joe is arguably one of the best friends you could ever have. The contrast between Big Z and Tank and how surfing was portrayed was great! It’s definitely a movie you gotta see at least once.
“Coulda walked up to anyone. And… he walks right up to me” (he barges through the crowd) “He gives me this awesome one-of-a-kind Big Z necklace” (takes the necklace from a bunch of other ones) “And then he tells me, ‘You know, kid, never give up. Find a way, cuz that’s what winners do’” (he isn’t actually saying anything) I love the writing of this movie so much, this interaction is both funny and personifies Cody

That’s definitely because of Shia. He’s had a troubled life and going through tough times during the making of this. 10/10 for Shia for capturing this perfectly.
A film portrayed as a made up “documentary” with actual pro surfers getting to voice certain characters and give a little insight into what they see when they surf. Also with the most natural dialogue ever from the actors. 😆 It’s just so well written and really well animated. I never get tired of watching this film^^
Yeah, why doesn't this movie get the kind of attention Frozen got? It does so much more that's new than that film ever did! And unlike Frozen, it doesn't constantly beat you over the head with any of the unique things it does!
@@jeniferclemente1252 You remember the SpongeBob episode MuscleBob BuffPants? In that, SpongeBob wants big muscles but finds Sandy Cheeks's training too stressful and grueling, so instead he fakes it by purchasing a pair of inflatable balloon muscles called Anchor Arms. Then he brags his head off to everyone at Goo Lagoon about how much stronger he is and becomes the most popular guy there, even though if anything he's actually weaker than he was without the fake arms. Frozen is like that. It keeps bashing us over the head with what it does, like "Oooh, look at me, I'm the first Disney movie to say you can't marry someone you just met!" "Oh, look, everybody, I'm the first Disney film that has a strong woman who doesn't need a man!" And so on and so on. This movie’s great. One can argue this was even better than Sony pictures animation’s first movie, open season, which was mostly good on its own. Too bad this movie in particular is underrated.
I know people see this type of comment a lot, but this scene really made me feel for Cody. I know what it’s like to be in that living situation he was in before going to Pen Gu Island for the competition.

God the animation is so good. You don’t see that grounded down to earth sort of movement often in animation because one of the principles is literally exaggeration and scripted dialogue has structured beats the acting has to hit but the Surf’s Up animators dial it just enough to have that documentary style feel. The little subtleties and secondary action is just fantastic!
I really miss the technique we used to see of the "outtakes" and "behind the scenes" in earlier animated movies, like here, Toy Story, and Bug's Life. Would be nice to see that again in some newer animated movies.

They dont make movies like this anymore man. They probably wouldve have to make one of the characters gay as a plot point. Modern music wouldve been terrible and ruined the movie

To be fair, it doesn't matter if something's a cheap mass-produced bit of plastic - if it comes from the right person, it really can be one-of-a-kind.
cody believed he was worthy from the very beggining
