I do this type of work professionally. Why did you set a string line? You didn't use it to create a straight bed line and you didn't appear to use it to establish final height.

    • @TDSheridanLab

The string was for the height of the pavers. The full video is pinned below. Thank you for watching!

I would have set a grade stake establishing final and course heights.
Buried the first course at least 2/3 below final grade in front of wall to keep the wall from sliding out from the bottom.
Then using levels would have laid the base course and stacked on top. If the wall was straight I would definitely have used a string line. But with the curves its been my experience the the string line just gets in the way. Trust your skills and your tools to do a good job.

Looks good! But whats the string line for? It didn't look like you followed the straight line. Was it to keep a consistent hight for the base layer measuring from the line down to the blocks?

I own a landscaping company. Although it might look good now, within 6 months this project will cave, slope and dip. It’ll look terrible because their is no paver base layer. That layer bust be 6-8” thick and compacted. Then 1-2” paver sand above it, and finally the paver stones above it, each tapped into place. Landscaping adhesive to be used on all stacked stones to improve structural rigidity. For curved projects such as this one, the string line is merely to serve as an elevation guide. If the project area is heavily saturated during rains, do to declined grading or perhaps a gutter dispenses water in its direction, proper drainage must be installed. We normally install french drains and it will drastically protect and reserve the project. Pooled water is the primary threat to most landscaping projects. Planing ahead and incorporating irrigation solutions that comply with local, state, and federal building codes are strongly recommended. Sure it looks nice today, but unless built properly, this will be a repeat project every year. Some things should be left to the pros, or at least do the research to build it correctly the first time. Saving you significant time and money.

I'll save my normal defense of paver base vs gravel + sand because I've already answered that in other comments on this video and the long form version of this video (Pinned comment and in the description).
As far as the "I own a landscaping company. Although it might look good now, within 6 months this project will cave, slope and dip. It’ll look terrible because their is no paver base layer. " Beside the multiple spelling and grammatical errors, your also wrong because that edging which also continues around 3 sides of my house and has been installed for over a year without any issues. This includes last winter where it was the snowiest winter in our region of Minnesota for the last decade and had multiple feet of snow on top of it for months at a time.
This is lawn edging, not a retaining wall. I know some people use those terms interchangeably but there is a difference. And in this case one of those differences is how much and type of base material you need. Meaning for paver/brick edging on stable ground, the minimum you need is 2 inches of sand for the structure to be stable. I used 4 inches of paver base which is mixture of sand and gravel that locks into the curves of these pavers and landscape adhesive between the first and second row. Any water behind the pavers can still drain through the vertical spaces between the pavers. Retaining walls are different and because they have to hold earth in place over time. True lawn edging just as to look pretty, so the building requirements are very different even though some of the building materials can be interchangeable. So, by all available metrics for this specific project, I over engineered it. Not to your level of needless over engineering, but to a level that increased ease of installation, and decreased time, materials, labor, and cost.
In the future try not to take shorts videos so seriously. Shorts are a max of 1 minute long and intended for quick entertainment and/or inspiration and show off. It's hard to distill a lot of complex and detailed information down to less than a minute. The only thing your comment did was drive more potential customers to the DIY route since you took a clip out of context and tried to be an expert on a project you were not project on.
      Thanks for Watching!

@@TDSheridanLab I see I struck a chord. Reverting to pointing out “grammatical errors” and in the same sentence using “your” instead of “you’re.” I have a masters degree with a terribly low 3.5 GPA. That’s bad, right? 1-minute could include the quick mentioning of using the appropriate base layer, as it’s, you know or don’t, significant to the longetivity of your projects’ structural integrity. Geez, too many “men” now adays are quite sensitive. Must be difficult being a simpy beta. That ultra-sensitivity is remarkable, lol. You should’ve joined us in the Marine Corps. You could either choose to continue doing sub-par work for unsuspecting clients, or learn and grow. Your customers deserve the very best performance from you. Becoming complacent is doing no one, yourself included, any good. You could’ve taken the high ground, but instead you chose to scrape way down where I’m at? Lol. VIEWER BEWARE!!! Please, strongly consider hiring a true professional company that would instead construct your projects correctly the first time. Or, if you prefer spending more money in the long run or you’re a big fan of her correct in a so-called professional’s mistakes, hire this guy. I’m sure the sound for simply crying when things are going wrong is some thing you look forward to. Please be careful with companies like this. Just like in the other comments, this look won’t last. We regularly get called back to fix what DYI’ers and other so-called professional companies do. The level line is set at the height that corresponds to your height based on the pavers you’re using and how many rows you’re doing.

I think you’re over thinking this. Below is the long form version where I go into more detail. The total height is 6” above ground and it’s a really flat area of my property but graded away from the house. Rocks will be behind it on top of the weed block. Water will get absorbed into the ground/plants and any extra will move away from the house through the brick. I watched this work as expected with out an issue from all the snow I got this year melting away.

@@TDSheridanLab Thank you for the longer video. However, I'm a geologist who has seen thousands of moldy foundations and sills, cracked footings, and damages caused by expansive soils in my decades of work. Geotechnical recommendations, and often local building codes, specify continuous drainage away from footings to protect them, the walls on top of them, and the slab inside of them, from damage caused by water. Will the damage show up in the first year or two? Probably not. Will the damage show up eventually, and was that damage entirely preventable? Yes to both. In addition, if you get enough snow that you need to clear it off your roof then your line of blocks becomes a potential tripping hazard for anyone looking up while they clear the roof instead of down at their feet. I'm getting close to 80 years old, and I don't want to trip while backing away from a roof avalanche that I just caused.

    • @TDSheridanLab
      @TDSheridanLab  ปีที่แล้ว

I appreciate your concern, but it's not an issue. Water flows away from the house. I have a steep roof, awning, and gutters. No one is going to be on that side of the house in winter scrapping snow off the roof. Even with the record level of snow this year the snow bank barely covered the furthest point on the curve of the edging. you could easily account for the 4-6 feet of covered edging in the middle of this 45' run by looking at it. The down spout sits on top of the edging, the water flows over the edging and on the grass, then down the grade of my yard.
If anything it's better now because the previous plastic edging was solid so water couldn't move through it and I have a lot of clay in my soil so it's difficult for water to go down into the ground. Now with the paver base that is a sand gravel mixture and the space in the pavers it's easier for water to move.
Thank you for watching. I'm planning a fit pit video for later this year I look forward to reading your comments.
