- In 2019, the only grocery store in Clay County, WV closed its doors for good. Two years and a pandemic later, there continues to be no full service grocery store in the county. Join the Appalachia Service Project in learning about the challenges of food insecurity in this community and in Appalachia, and how organizations, community leaders, and residents work together to feed their community.

I hear West Virginia is full of wild edibles. Foraging would do their bodies good in more than one way. We live only 3 miles from a well-stocked grocery store, but still utilize and enjoy a good variety of "weeds" in addition to our own produce from garden, orchard, chickens, and bees. Our pantry and freezer are stocked, and it's a beautiful sight. In the winter months, we sprout broccoli, radishes, and alfalfa seeds on the window sill. Anyone can do it. It's easy, economical, and delicious. And extremely healthy! Learn what vegetables and fruits last between the monthly trips to the store. Here are some examples: Potatoes (white and sweet), squashes, onions, carrots, celery, cabbage (green & red), apples, oranges and lemons. I'm sure I've forgotten some. God has not left you without reasonable recourse for a healthy, happy, and satisfying life. Cut the cord on the television, and see creativity, motivation, and productive hours in the day rise to new heights. Oh, and one more thing: tell the food pantries to quit handing out the white bread, ramen, and doughnuts. Not doing those folks any favors. God bless the good doctor and others for trying to help.
This is heartbreaking in so many ways.
I left WV 30+ years ago but I do go back every few years. Something that really struck me the last time I visited was the lack of gardens. I know a lot of these places don’t have room for a big garden. However tomatoes, peppers, zucchini could all be grown. It’s like the people have just given up.

I was just gonna make the same comment. Once the generation that lived through the depression passed away, America has lost all sense of frugality. Appalachia is one of the most ecologically diverse places in the WORLD. You can grow most anything there. There is abundant rain most times, the Elk river runs right through town, why don't they fish?
They’re probably lazy; and don’t have any incentives to grow their own vegetables.

Being a veteran, I definitely have the right to say this: And this is what has become of America. So sad.
Being a veteran, I know that a % of the population have always been poor.

Grow a garden: but first you need a space. You need half decent soil. You need a shovel, rake, seeds, possibly fencing to
keep the critters out, some kind of compost or peat moss for soil improvement. Unless you're going to totally depend on
rain, you'll need a supply of water.Then you need sunshine, rain, warm temperatures, and a knowledge of how to get rid
of ruinous bugs and diseases. This year we had non stop rain and cooler than normal temps. The carrots, beets, green
beans, cucumbers, and tomatoes failed. The rhubarb, swiss chard, and some herbs were the only things that turned out
well. So even with a garden, there may not be enough food for the family.
They get average of 42 inches of rain there a year. There is no reason at all why they can't grow a garden.
Excuses, excuses. Your great grandparents would be ashamed.

Get a portable heater the next time you go to Walmart. They don't use lots of energy and will heat up a room real quick and cozy. I had to do that when I lived in an apartment with a broken heater. Worked like a charm.
I am so glad to have 4 grocerie-stores nearby. In fact, I can reach them by bike.
From spring to autumn I can get vegetables out of my garden, such as potatoes, zucchini, tomatos, cucumbers, pies, beans, strawberries, pumpkins etc.
I live in Virginia and there are some areas around here this video could have easily been taking about. Things that can be done short-term, long-term, and that are sustainable aren't always the easiest.

They are all driving fairly new and expensive SUVs. Most of them look like they need exercise more than food. Sorry for being blunt but I refuse to believe that overweight people are "food insecure".
Food Banks makes fat people because most only have high carb food. The food banks can only keep foods with a long shelf life and that means highly processed food.
I live in Mineral Co WV ill plant a garden this coming yr 2024 n plant 2 Dwarf apple trees n 2 grapes n 2 blackberries. Then an Aquaculture gardens like 2 get couple egg layer chickens n a milk goat garden of Heirloom seeds. Try to cut back to 2 meals day. Eat as Smish do olde fashioned Oatmeal w 1% milk. Ill get a gal whole milk then pour it into 3 empty milk jugs making 4 then pour water in rest to fill jug leaves 4 gals 1% give 1 to cats. Add 1/4 tsp brown sugar snack banana or apple. Lunch chili, kidney beans w hamburger n generic tomato soup crackers n a peanut butter sandwich n iced Sun tes needs no sugar. Supper Popcorn as most hard work is done for the day.

Why don't they grow little gardens. If they grow They can can everything.
They can save money and they wouldn't have to worry about getting to the Grocery store.
If everyone start to grow their food instead of lawns, we won’t have BS like food insecurity
No way should anyone live in West Virginia. I’ve traveled through there for work a handful of times and i just couldn’t wait to get out of that state. So poor and hopeless. Sad really.
Can if you put them in the freezer. Get some zip lock bags
Teach the school children how to grow gardens and give them credit toward graduating.
Changing the words doesn't make one hungry feel any better. People are starving, skipping meals. People can't afford to eat healthy.

definitely the United States is a very bad country in certain ways
I wonder if it would be possible to start community gardens? Maybe in conjunction with the schools. The students could earn credits for tending the gardens and local residents could help in exchange for “shares”. I know they can’t grow year round but certain crops can be stored over winter - carrots, potatoes, sweet potatoes, winter squash, onions and garlic are some examples.
The school system in poor areas are already failing, so diverting classroom time to gardening would just increase another problem. but gardening itself is a good idea.
@@jdsmith542 - It wouldn’t have to be during school hours but it could also be incorporated into their science classes.
Network great to see the school helping out. Life is a puzzle connection to a food route plant garden. Some farmers do well.
Dollars general should be prohibited in all WV
The owners of those stores making money making people sick.
This should not happen in America. No way in hell. So terribly sad and unacceptable.
