This is a perfect opportunity to do a frame off restoration. Powder coat the frame, run all new brake lines and wording harness etc. put 4 wheel disc brakes back on etc. I would love to restore one of these trucks and do every inch of it. Keep the exterior looking old and rusty but put all new technology in the truck. I actually seen one of these last night and it was painted to look old and rusty but the interior was all brand new, brakes were all updated etc. it was a very very nice truck.
Having the hubcaps help keep the rust off the wheel nuts. When I took my wheel hubs off the insides were very rusted like yours. I took them all apart and ordered all new parts including hubs. $300.00 later and new parts came in for the truck. Thanks for sharing.👍👍
I have five that also fit a 1947 truck that I'm not going to use anymore. They have tires on them so they haven't been just rusting away. They held air without tubes for over 20 years.
Those rims I’d work on, they are like my Jeep rims- not the traditional split rim the dumb dumb tire shops think they are. I learned to do the tire installation at the CG base I was stationed at with the auto shop. I did my 63 f100 rims and tires there. You can buy tires and have them shipped to your house. There has got to be an old timer shop around that will do them. What about a semi-truck shop? When I was a teenager I was a sea cadet and went to the coast guard air station my father was stationed at and the flight mechs had their helo split rim in a cage designed to contain the tire and rim if it exploded during inflation. Keep at it. I’ve been building my 63 with inline 6 223 since 2015. Being deployed every few months cuts into the garage time. Good luck.
@@JOTsShop So- I bought one of those harbor freight tire changers because the CG shop on base is shut down due to covid.... I used the tire changer to mount the tires on my jeep rims by hand, and they have inner tubes in them. It didnt take long at all to do it. I bet you can do it yourself in the shop- especially since you guys have the grit to figure it out. good luck.
Those are common steel wheels not the bad 2 piece wheels. The "widow maker" wheels have two separate pieces held together by the tire pressure or with a seperate lock ring.
Thanks for the comment. That actually sounds like an interesting approach. As we continue on we'll have to look into that possibility. Also thanks for watching!
Those aren't split rims. the heavier duty 8 lug Fords had those that literally came apart when you changed the tire. Those are the dangerous ones. What you have is the standard half ton stamped steel truck rim. Those kind of hard to find now because they differ from the later stamped steel wheel Ford used up until the 80's. I'd sandblast the original rims and repaint them. I'm running 1948 Lincoln rims on the front of my 60. Ford cars had the same bolt pattern that the half ton trucks had for a while.

Yeh those aren't split rims. Maybe it's good you didn't go to these tire places. Unfortunately you need original 1957-1960 15" or 16" wheels for tose hubcaps. Keep your eye on market place, craigs, and FB groups, they pop up.
Thanks for the comment! We took the rear wheels to two different and very reputable tire stores. Both said they would not work on them since they were split-rim "widow-makers". Both shops gave up sales because they wouldn't work on them. Since we're not experts in tire rims, we accepted their judgment (especially since they didn't try to sell us new rims). We'll buy new rims for the rear.

It looks like your ford had the heavy duty suspension. I would consider reusing the split rims because they can handle more weight.

My dad has one
Nice!
I've got a 60 and I had to change to newer rims because the stockers won't fit over the disc brake rotors. got the hub caps too
I'm in Omaha
Where did you get the new rims? I'm thinking Summit Racing for ours, but not sure.

Jerry you are correct 16 .5 split rim hot 15 ,
It’s a 1958 truck not a 1960s truck
The 58 is in the same family as the 60. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching!
