The Leftovers is one of the most frustrating, incoherent, pretentious… yet alleviating, harmonious, emotionally resonant television series in history, which, despite being one of my absolute favorites, I am often hesitant to recommend, since for you it could be a life altering experience or an infuriating waste of time. It is perhaps because of its love it or hate it nature that I have yet to see a long form review of the series here on TH-cam.
And thus, this video will aim to serve as a definitive analysis, beginning with a discussion of the structure of the series as a whole, followed by a breakdown of each primary character’s arc, and topped off with a brief conclusion in which I attempt to deliver a concise thesis as to what the hell it all meant.

The leftovers truly are the friends we made along the way.
The Garveys not being directly affected by the departure isn’t a weakness of the show. It’s completely in line with the focus of the show not being on the departure itself, but its effects on the world in which it happened. If anything it’s even more interesting, perhaps even more poignant, that we follow a family ripped apart by a societal loss rather than a personal one.
totally agree. While loss is a heavy theme in the show, i think its cool that the loss the Garby's experience is not that of a person.
The Garvey's, well Kevin's wife, did lose a baby to the departure, so they did suffer loss

I think he meant by how the narrative would make more sense playing out. I agree with him just on paper, but I agree with you on how it was executed. And it makes more sense with what the story is really about.
Fully agree. This video is great, but that whole part of it sort of just felt like MS missed the point of the Garvey family. It also provides a nice contrast between Kevin and Nora: Kevin is a man who lost nobody during the Sudden Departure, and Nora is a woman who lost everybody.
No hate to MS though - there's a depressing lack of Leftovers analyses, and this is a great video

It's good to finally hear someone talking about Damon Lindeloff's actual best show for once instead of Lost for the millionth time, especially considering how criminally under-watched/talked about it has been when it's easily 1 of the best shows of all-time. So thank you for that.

@@theitalianalien8477 : I liked season 1 overall, but season 2 (in my opinion) is 1 of the best written/acted and well directed seasons of any tv show that I've ever seen, and unlike Lost, they don't botch the ending (probably coz J.J. abrams wasn't there to ruin everything with too many mystery boxes). That being said, It is kind of a slow burn so that's not gonna be for everybody, but for anyone that loves film/tv and knows quality when they see it I highly recommend it. especially season 2.
@@theitalianalien8477 : Oh, and what kept me watching besides the writing/acting/directing (because not everyone is gonna care or notice that kinda stuff as much as some ppl) was the mystery elements and wanting to finish the show to see how everything was gonna be paid off. Same with Lost. Where as with Lost, the mysteries ( probably because there were a million of them) were more entertaining/intriguing, and fun to watch, and kept me watching til the end. But with the leftovers the mysteries don't get you hooked quite as much as the one's in Lost, but they overall show is just SOOO much better and higher quality. Ya know, if ya pay attention to that kinda stuff. I'm a film buff and do a lot of comedy writing so I really appreciate well written stuff a lot more than most ppl and don't care how slow something is as long as it's good, but most ppl will find a lot of great stuff boring and bad if it's too slow paced for them no matter how good it objectively is because we're all just wired differently and some ppl just can't get into slow burns like other ppl can. (P.S. Dear God, I really need to practice writing shorter comments because literally everybody is gonna take 1 look at this n say, "Yeah, I ain't readin that shit!" )

The episode where they meet "god" on the ship is a personal favourite - brilliant dialogue - a great series that really makes you think and feel. Amazing how it shows how we as people ascribe meaning to random things/events for better or worse.

I couldn't stand the Patty Levin character until she died and came back as a "ghost." I loved her as Kevin's foil. I found their back and forth hilarious. Every review I've watched of this show neglects to mention how darkly humorous it is. The reviews depict it as a sad depressing drama...which it kind of is, but I believe the humor injected throughout was the magical ingredient that sent an okay drama into the stratosphere as one of the best television experiences ever.
If you've never watched this show, do yourself a HUGE favor and drop what your doing, and start watching now. You'll thank me later.
So glad to see this. Your recent streak of content for The Leftovers has been beautiful to see. TH-cam has a shocking lack of content for the show, especially given its cult status. This is easily my favourite show, despite its potential flaws and lack of strict storytelling - this coming from someone who is usually a big plot junkie - so it’s so nice to see a genuine critique.
I’m actually currently on my third viewing of the show, and it’s definitely a show that only gets better and better with each viewing. I don’t know how many times you’ve watched the show as a whole, but my second viewing was easily my favourite watch-along, and I feel like my third might be my favourite as I progress. So much just clicks together so well, though I agree that’s probably all to the credit of the third season.
All the same, this is great and I’ve been thoroughly enjoying your stuff. Thank you so much for making these videos.
I'm curious; did you ever happen to notice the song Kevin and Nora danced to in the finale (I've got dreams) was also the same song Kevin put on the very first time Nora met Jill? When she came over to the Garvey's house for dinner and Jill rummaged through her purse looking for the gun...S1E8 (I think). Albeit a different rendition, it is the same song. It was special, it was "their song", at least in Kevin's mind. I always envisioned that Kevin had slipped a cd to the dj at the "dance" with instructions to play that song if & when Nora showed up....that's just how I like to think it went down. Just a tiny sample of the inception level of character construction that was woven into the writing on this show. It's even more incredible when you consider, they weren't 100% sure if they were going to get a second, much less third season green lit from HBO when they wrote that into the first season. Such a G move. Just fucking brilliant. It's my no.1, of all time. Second place is sucking wind and loosing ground.

As much as Damon sometimes irritates the hell out of me, this show was one of the defining moments in my life in shaping how I look at character relationships in fiction.

A truly great analysis bro. And while I do agree that the criticism you made about the show especially season 01 isn't unwarranted for the most part, I simply didn't care about them due to how great the character writing was. The show is as close to perfection as you can get. Great casting, lighting, cinematography, acting, this show is a timeless classic. Hope this video reaches 1M views.
I binged this show for the first time 3 weeks ago after @PrestonJacobs kept talking about it. Immediately hit youtube for longform analysis and was SO ANGRY that there weren't any good ones out there. 2 weeks later Macabre hit us with Part 1. And now we are here. Thank you my friend.

It might come as a surprise but I love the first season the best. Jill's struggle is quite illustration of what random teenager would go through if that happenned. They would feel like life is meaningless. Her losing her mother to a cult just reinforces that. I really liked that the family we follow didn't lose anyone because 2% is not a lot but would still be traumatising for everyone. However yes it has some issues. Tom's subplot is bad though... and yes the cult stuff are not clear. And that makes some characters motivation to join it really hard to follow since you don't exactly know what they are joining
s1 is my favourite as well!
The series has deeply impacted me. I was touched so much by the story, especially of Norah and Kevin and their love. It just felt like the plot is telling something true. Don't know what it was exactly, but still, it was true.
I basically gave up after the average first season, but couldn't be happier that I binged the rest of it after reading some rave reviews of seasons 2 and 3. Leftovers is easily the best stuff Lindelof has done and probably one of the most underrated shows ever made.
Also: I appreciate the effort that went into this analysis. Shows like this deserve a video that's at least two hours long.
Shows that reward you for investing and believing in them as a viewer are truly incredible and beautiful. The Leftovers is arguably the best I've ever seen in this regard.
If you haven't seen Station Eleven, absolutely should be on your radar for similar reasons. Probably tied with The Leftovers for me as my favorite.

The season 1 episode where Nora meets holy Wayne was so powerful, and got me hooked on this show. Loved where they took the show.
A woman disappeared while having sex with Kevin. He was definitely directly effected by that. My criticism would be that he didn’t lose his mind more than he did.

Ok so I'm like half way through your vid and I LOVE HOW YOU'RE REALLY CAPTURING EVERYTHING LIKE LITERALLY ALL THE BIGGEST MOST SIGNIFICANT POINTS. Like throughout my own viewing of this show on its airing and rewatch over covid I got so much more out of it but I really lvoe that I don't have to keep track of it all still because it's all bundled into this video. One of the few shows I’ve ever rewatched a second time all the way through, just finished it last night again and it still holds up as one of my top 5 fav series! I just love the characters, cinematography, music/editing, just everything about this show, it’s like one of those dreams that stay with you your entire life, it’s strange, I don’t know how else to explain the weird connection I have with this show, it’s like apart of me now somehow, and season 1 is excellent, you can pick anything part, season 1 is still extremely captivating.

Thank you for this review! This show changed my life when it first aired. I do interpret its main idea differently(and that unites all of the characters too): coping with grief is possible only through helping others or inflicting your own pain on them. We do not know shit about whatever life is about, but hate produces hate, pain produces pain and we must do everything in our power to stop the cycle of their reproduction or the world is doomed(taken by gr and nuked). This is my take on the main idea behind the story. This video is beautiful - so many things I looked past!

Great video! Just finished the series last night, I interpreted the finale completely differently. I saw Nora's journey to the 2% world and back as her reinstantiating the metaphysical presence of trust and love in the 98% world.
I always saw the departure not just as the removal of 2% of the population, but as a literal removal of love from the world. Patti pretty much says as much in the National Assassin episode. After the departure the whole world lost the capacity to trust and love one another, as the audience we see this most obviously in Kevin and Nora themselves, which you point out don't really seem to have a real deep commitment to one another for almost the entire series, and the existence of this commitment is the final question of the finale, and Nora rejects Kevin until she knows the depth of his commitment.
In the finale, Nora even mentions that the 2% world seemed happier then the 98%. They were faced with such a deep and cataclysmic struggle for survival and a complete flipping of their society that they needed to stick together and rely on one another to survive and if anything this only brought more love and trust into the remaining 2% that were left. Where as in the 98% world they were able to kinda just ignore it and limp along, alone.
This is what I think fueled Nora's deep sense that she did not belong. Nora was the first person who went to the 2% world and decided to go back, for no reason other than it was the truth-full thing to do. This decision and her ultimate reunion with Kevin isn't just a personal beauty but something of cosmic significance within the show and is the true revival of love in their universe.
Also, the finale is called "The Book of Nora" which in my mind hints to her cosmic messianic role.
Obviously this is just my interpretation and doesn't take into affect Kevin's half of the story, you can definitely read the ending a million ways.

Side rant: Why the fuck did none of the actors or creators of this show get any award recognition or nominations at all? Usually even those clowns are privy to less popular entertainment and will at least give some obscure stuff a nod here or there. Watching this video reignited my anger about Justin Theroux and all the others not being celebrated for this. End rant
Reminds me of that joke from The Good Place, where the judge makes a ransom comment about how she recently rewatched the leftovers and it made her realize how pissed she was Carrie Coon didn’t get an Emmy nomination lol. That quote alone got me to go back and rewatch it, already loved the show but I wanted to go back to that world again, it was time.
I watched this when originally broadcast, initially with low expectations due to an impression of Lindelof based upon Lost and Prometheus. It totally changed my opinion of him. I recall at the time feeling like the finale had some sort of meta context in relation to the general dissapointment many had with Lost's ending, in so much as it emphasises the whole thing of explanations being less important than the characters respective journeys. Which i've come to realise is Lindelof's thing in general.
Anyway, great analysis for a great series. I should definitely give it a rewatch sometime soon.
I've seen all the great shows. However, Justin Theroux's Kevin Garvey was one of the best I've ever seen. Acting was phenomenal and beautiful.
I watched S1. Found this video. Paused. Watched rest of the show and then came back after months.
I’m so glad I stopped this video when you told me to
with regard to laurie’s “attempted suicide”, when i first watched it i genuinely didn’t believe laurie wanted to kill herself. after her and kevin talked and she told him about the pregnancy and she asked him “did you want another baby?” and he said no and she said “i didn’t either.” i really saw that as her making peace with what has happened to her and the departure as a whole. she now sees it as just an unexplainable event that, in the end, resulted in what she wanted anyway. and then going scuba diving was just a a kind of personal fuck you to the idea you can’t find happiness after a bad thing happens. when i watched it with other people and they thought that laurie killed herself i was honestly surprised and it wasn’t until then that i saw it was ambiguous at the least.
The theory that makes the most sense about John, his wife, Evie and the grandfather is that the grandfather molested all of them. John and his wife might have had that in common and that’s what caused them to connect and eventually get married, Virgil did some time and they tried to move on, then later he gets out and molests Evie which sends John into a rage bringing back all the memories of what happened to him and his wife so he tries to kill him. It explains all of their trauma and makes sense with their relationships. The son still having a relationship with the grandfather could make sense because he is a highly religious kid and strongly believes in forgiveness.

Yeah I’ve tried to recommend it to people and they just never finish it, it’s so frustrating! I recently rewatched the entire series and was just as captivated as I was the first time of not more! And man the music in the show! Just perfect editing.

I thought it was clear that GR's agenda was chaos. People are trying to move on and hold on to societal norms to move forward. And GR is like.. The old things can't be anymore the world is pretty much reset in a devastating way. Never forget
The 2% disappearing thing doesn't sound like a big deal compared to other stories where some curse afflicts 50% of the world, but 2% sounds like it would be enough that half the world will experience the direct effect of the disappearance, but the other half doesn't. It's interesting in that way where having significantly less of something can cause more division.

I’m a believer that the “supernatural” aspects were “real” … but more ambiguous and unknowable than we could ever comprehend. In other words, so nuanced as to be as close to Sci Fi as Fantasy. Exceptional show.
Truly a remarkable reflection on humanity if you consider the miracle device of the “departure” as an analogy to the unexplainable miracle of life itself, and the story as an analogy of how all of us are here trying to explain and cope with it.
Imo the most underrated tv drama ever. A well deserved analysis.

@@Matt-iy4tn oh man, I could leave a whole essay to answer it. I think the most succinct thing is it was just the right show for me at the right time. I was going through some really tough stuff in my life and I decided to watch it despite knowing how rough it would be and depressing. Even though seeing Mac's other videos let me know where the plot was headed, I was still caught off guard by how well acted it was.
I think it was life changing because I could see elements of myself and those in my life through these characters. The good parts and the bad. In this way I can relate to Kevin, in that way like Nora, and so on. To see how they interacted with each other. How they grappled with their own demons and to just try to move on not only gave me some bearing on how I can move on but how I can be better too.
And this show was just one of the few that was governed by its characters who were all so multi layered and depthful and as Mac's first video laid out, managed to use that to its advantage to subvert everything.

@@flamingturkey654 I also watched the first two seasons in 2015 battling depression. It was like a spiritual experience for me. The emotional scenes just hit different, especially with the music.

Great analysis of a severely under appreciated show. One constructive criticism I would have is the tonality of how the video essay is read, where every sentence follows the same cadence.

I’ve been waiting for this! So excited. I can see already that we seem to agree the show started off flawed - still great - and got better every year, with S3 being an absolute masterpiece IMO. Only 15 min in but I def agree with your criticisms of S1. I didn’t care for a lot of the GR plot to be honest. It was too prominent in S1 and their whole silent-smoking schtick got a little old, lol.
Anyway thanks for the continually amazing content! I’d love to see you break down Mad Men or Deadwood or Sopranos. (I’m also curious if you’ve seen Carnivale - like TL, it’s a flawed but still spectacular and unique series, and theres not enough appreciation and analysis of it out there as it seems to have been kinda forgotten).

@@Sidharthavicious I love rewatching Carnivale every October. It fits perfectly with that eerie, almost horror-movie atmosphere.
Needless to say, the cancellation of Carnivale was one of the most disappointing in TV history. I’d kill to have seen that show get the full 6 seasons Knauf so painstakingly planned out already.

I think you missed the point that the Garvey family was DIRECTLY affected by the Sudden Departure. Laurie Garvey's unborn child disappeared from her womb in the Dr.'s office during the Sudden Departure. She had already been struggling with whether to keep or abort the baby and thus her doctor called and asked why she cancelled her appointment and demanded she keep it because she was "nearing the point of no return." The guilt she felt over not knowing if she wanted the baby and then it disappearing along with her crumbling marriage led to her mental snap and joining the Guilty Remnant which resulted in the crumbling of their family.
I have never seen a show since that has actually made me feel so many emotions while watching. Most of the emotions were depressing and melancholy but in a weird good recharging kind of way. It was more of an experience for me than just watching TV.
I love Sopranos, The Wire and Breaking Bad, but The Leftovers is my all-time favourite, it aired in a tough time of my life, and of loss. It affected me bigtime and is my all-time favorite show..ever

2:05:07 when Nora states her full name. Although I’ve watched the whole series three separate times, I never realized one of her middle names is Jameson. Why that’s significant to me and prompted me to leave this comment is that my daughter who was born two years ago is named Nora. She’s not named FOR the character in this show, but it was the show that gave me the idea for the name. My wife and I left the gender of our child as a surprise for when she was born but we were never able to settle on a boys name. The only name we had picked out was Nora. When my wife was in labor and just before she began to push, she asked me to put on one of her relaxing playlists on pandora. The very first song that came on was a version of Where Is My Mind. I’m not a religious person, but when I heard that song come on it seemed like a sign from somewhere that we were going to have a girl. The crazy part of it all is that since we were only planning on having one child my wife wanted our child’s middle name, regardless of its gender, to be her step fathers name since he and her mom were never able to have a child of their own and he has been such an important person in her life. So our daughter’s first and middle names are Nora James.
My biggest gripe with the show is how they changed the intro. Season one's intro was so cool, and then they changed it so drastically. Makes me a lil sad
I felt that the season 1 intro had a great song and visuals but it portrayed the tone of the show being a super grand supernatural plot which was a bit misleading, the show itself is much more focused on the characters and their reactions to the departure. The second season intro felt much more personal and highlighted the tragedy of the departure which makes you feel more empathy for the people within the world of the show, which is more in line with the point of the show, it was way more heart wrenching even though the tone was more upbeat, and the song fit the themes of the show perfectly. However for the season 3 intros I felt that them keeping the intro but changing the song every episode was a bit lazy/sloppy, I would've preferred that they kept the original song or made a completely new intro all together so that each season had a different intro.
I resented having to jump up and skip past that godawful intro song from s2 😂

Such a great show. Also a show its hard to recommend to others. Its themes aren't exactly easy subjects. Its a niche show but its truly a great experience to watch. I will click on any video that reorganize the greatness of the show.

I don't think supernatural and rational have to be at odds, especially when it concerns things we cannot have the answer to like an afterlife. The hotel could be a part of our collective consciousness that we all go to when we die. That itself is not a supernatural statement inherently.
I stopped watching this after season two because I thought it ended so perfectly that I didn't want anything -- even more Leftovers -- to risk ruining this.
That's ironic that you say that!. I did the same thing for four years!. I was so satisfied with the ending to season 2 that I really didn't feel compelled at all to watch season 3. I finally did it, and while there were parts that I really did like. It just didn't have the magic of season 2. It's a weird mix between the aimless meditation of grief of season 1 and the focused narrative of season 2.

Yeah. I guess there are TECHNICALLY ways you can explain it but at some point it becomes such a nuisance.

International Assassin was the best WTF episode I’ve ever seen. Like if you do something like that in a show like this… and then you have me tearing up at the end… you won screenwriting. Hang it up. I don’t even care that it breaks the supernatural rule

Just wanted to point out that, while I mostly think your criticisms of Tom’s character are very valid, I feel like Tom’s motivations make sense.
The role he plays in each season ties directly into helping people overcome trauma and harm. With Holy Wane, anti-brainwashing the Guilty Remnant and becoming a Cop: all of these roles serve to make sure he never has to witness another person so low that they commit suicide.
I even think him succumbing to Meg’s manipulation works on a base-level as it’s after that ex-GR woman’s suicide that he sinks to manipulation - perhaps in the same way as with Holy Wane. I think the implication is that he “realised” that helping people forget is doing more harm than good, and that people within the GR (specifically Meg) seem to be content with their life.
I will say though.. all of this is inference. While I think the subtext is definitely there to support all of this, you’re definitely right in saying Tom could’ve had a more clear-cut character. But I think if you dig, his motivations make sense.
Just finished rewatching the entire series since I got my partner interested in the plot. She loves it as well now.

Season one could be kind of "uneven" or maybe a litle "slow".....but it can only be considered as "average" in comparisson with seasons 2 and 3, cause quality wise "the leftovers" season 1 is pretty much on par with lots of others of seasons 1. But is undeniable that episodes like "Two boats and a helicopter", "Guest", "The garveys at their best" and "The prodigal son returns" are top notch TV.
