when I was young my entire life all photos, toys clothes anything related to my child hood was lost in a lost storage unit. TWICE! I was to little to understand the why's. The fact that you said you'd ask the office to call the owner of the scrapbooks made me want to hug you. You purchased this and absolutely did not have to care. All these years later all I care about losing was the photos and memories, not the stuff.
Someone who is going to jail doesn't have time to pack that stuff so neatly. This was absolutely done with the intention of coming back to it, by someone who cared about their stuff, or their relative's stuff. If they see this they will be kicking themselves!!
I keep thinking that you need to turn your van around so the slider doors are facing you. Someone walking through, could lift or go through stuff while you're immersed in boxes, but also would save you steps every time you want to put something in it. I'm so excited for you and this find!

they probably didn't spend money on the stuff. those things were stolen from shops or from rich people's wardrobes. e.g. by a maid/babysitter/cleaner who was obviously kleptomaniac. and who's in jail now, and thinks about being released and selling all those stuff. anyway: buying this locker for $1 was obviously not a fair game. it is not a real life fairytale that someone accidentally buys something for $1 and it's worth $100000. you can buy one of those plastic bins for $2 minimum, so the locker facility operators would have been dumb not to give out information to someone who would pay them some money from the profits. cartel in the works.

As for the auction I hope you realize that they're lien auctions that are advertised and if there are a minimum of two bidders the auction is on, at this auction I think he said there were only three bidders and many units and they agreed not to bid each other up. The perfect conditions as a buyer...

Likely it will just sit there till it just gets tossed. These places give you 90 days of no payment to at least make contact and make an effort to pay their bill, but most either can't or don't care. It is a business afterall and they can't afford to store your stuff for free. I'm sure my comment will get a thumbs down, but it's true.

Even the packing materials around the dishware is extremely high end. Most of us use old newspapers or packaging paper. Or bubble wrap but not the high-end stuff you’re saying.
It never ceases to amaze me how someone can have the credit cards or $$$$ to purchase Coach, Dyson, LV bags and shoes, - all this high end merch but somehow can’t come up with the money to pay the storage unit fee of maybe a couple hundred $$ a month and lose it all. Why not sell off some to save the rest?!
You don’t know her situation. She could have died with no living relatives. She could have had Alzheimer’s disease. This pandemic has altered a lot of people’s finances. Do not judge because life can suddenly do a 360 on you.
