Really awesome song, sounding gorgeous, well played, perfect !!! Asynje/Virelai, definitely 2 great bands ! Well, in fact, I'm french, I play Hurdy-Gurdy and I love music from the north european tradition, I recently try to play some "basic" nordic tunes to start with ( Langdans fran Soleron- Ljugaren-Steklat fran Särna...) and I was wondering which is the best way to tune a Hurdy-Gurdy to play this melodies...like a swedish Säckpipa in E/A ( melodic strings in E + drones in A) or other tuning ? Greetings and cheers from France
I'm a nyckelharpa and hurdy gurdy player too and I play lots of "nordic tunes" as you put it. The säckpipa tuning would only really make sense if you want to play together with a säckpipa player. A looooot of tunes are in G or D, which is why many säckpipa players usually also have a D/G chanter and D drones, too (to make it easier to play together with others). If you have G and D drones and a G Melody string on your hurdy gurdy, you're already pretty versatile. Having a D melody string makes tunes in G a lot easier though. Nordic tunes often are only in 1 1/2 octaves, but having the center note "in the middle", if that makes sense. So if you for example play a tune in G, it will often start on a low D. Playing tunes like this on a G string is of course possible, but it's more comfortable on a D string ;)
MrFair, thanks a lot for all this details about the tuning, so, I'll try that according to your advices. Nordic tunes are really awesome with a large range of tunes suitable for HG, cheers :)
Its a nyckelharpe. Usually bowed, but played pizzicato on this song. 3 or 4 voice strings, stopped by keys (like hurdy gurdy), 12 sympathetic strings. See Johann Hedin video

No problem! Always happy to help! :)
Fantastic.
Absolutely gorgeous! Two of them are also in Virelais. What is the instrument the gouty on the left is playing??

Det da hende fra Huldre
Lovely. Very nearly perfect. All it needed was for a Jew's harp to come in halfway through.
