    now that I played battlefield 1, and seen almost all your videos, I have a whole new respect towards that war and any war. nowadays I see that lots of politicians wish for war because of their fantasy of how battle is like but we as in the entire human race has yet to see a total war like ww1 & 2 and I wish we ever don't, ever!

    A war game that captured the screaming, sobbing, wimpering, pleading for help of the agonised wounded, terrified and dying people and animals, would I think be unbearable. Lucky we do not capture the smell too. Love the channel and the way it keeps drawing us back to tragedy and humanity of a truly hellish time.

    Interestingly enough thanks to the advancements in communications there has been a shift back to more of a top down command structure. This has been very true in places like Iraq and Afghanistan where the rules of engagement are very strict. A forward observer I served with told me he had to wait 45 minutes to get an illumination mission authorized. Turns out that the colonel, who was the only person on base to authorize it, was asleep with the door to his room locked and his cell phone turned off.

  • @BlairMaynard

    Brilliant answer -- the actual sounds of WW1 would be great hear. Lots of people dont know this, but all these films from WW1 are dubbed later, sometimes decades later, with sounds that somebody in a sound studio thinks the videos should sound like. This is because they didnt have useful portable audio recording back then. So to actually replicate the artillery sounds, we would have to fire the same weapons and have microphones near where the artillery shells land or explode. I am afraid this just will never happen, but if it did, it would give us a better idea of what the soldiers actually experienced.

    Hi Indy, great episode, as always. My question for Out of the Trenches - How many people knew orders in advance? How long did it took to spread down the command chain? What common soldier knew about his objective in the battle?

    • @mybutthasteeth1347
      @mybutthasteeth1347 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Common soldiers didn't often know orders more than a few days in advance from what I've read and sometimes were surprised by sudden orders to move positions, particularly if the enemy had started a large offensive such as the German spring offensive of 1918. There simply wasn't time. Orders did sometimes leak to the common soldiers though, often from a particularly forthcoming officer friendly with his men and spread along the lines. Hope this helped

    Hey Indy - The game "Toy Soldiers" somewhat accomplishes what you mention at the end of the video here. Watching a WW1 battle landscape unfold from above. Sure, it's a game that presents WW1 model dioramas come to life to fight (which makes the game bearable and enjoyable as opposed to ghastly and morbid if the soldiers were flesh and blood) but with the excellent sound design in the game (whistles and bugles as well as weaponfire) and the fact that battlefields are gradually, organically turned from farmland or towns into a shellhole wasteland really makes it the "best" video game adaptation of WW1 I have ever seen. It just gives a really chilling and sad (condensed) view of how these battles changed a landscape. Please check it out sometime! (the game devs also mostly included straight up historical weapons and settings, as opposed to some other video games which whilst excellent tend to take a LOT of liberties in order to "sex it up")

  • @Squato

    Hey Indy, and all the wonderful crew/support network that keeps making this show a success. First off, thank you for putting in all the hard work on helping to bring back to life a war that faded into what it had over the years.
    Secondly, I have two questions for an Out Of The Trenches episode;
    1) During the course of the show, you have mentioned the Shackleton expedition which set out in 1914 a few times. Will the show cover what happens to the crew upon their return to the world at war? If so, will if give a overview of the wartime actions of the general crew, or focus on figures such as Frank Hurley? I figured figures like Frank Hurley would get their own episode, but unsure on the rest.
    2) This is point about my high school education, but when I was studying The Great War in high school a point that the syllabus (NSW, Australia) discussed was propaganda in the war. More directly, by the British during Battle of the Somme when the British government released a war film for the first time that showed what it was actually like on the front for the first time. Something that is meant to have proved to be a mistake, as the print showed dead bodies in the trenches, something unseen until that time by the British home front. In the 17 odd years since, I've never come across anything that discusses this film. Was it real? Or is this a falsehood of history?
    Thanks again everyone for the show!
    (Feel free to edit this question down if it does get asked on air so as to save time/the voice of Indy.)

    Question for Out of the Trenches: Hi Indy, absolutely loving this channel and learning a lot about Humanity's history in warfare. I've noticed you've given a lot of respect to the video gaming crowd, talking about Battlefield 1, Verdun and suchlike. Would you be willing to look at other games from the past that have incorporated World War 1 as its background, such as the 1990s games Wings and Red Baron, to Valiant Hearts: The Great War, and discuss how accurate or appropriate they are to the WW1 era (and if you cried at Valiant Heart's ending :-P) Looking forward to future episodes!

    There's an interesting parallel between Mission Tactics and the arguments that took place within the Royal Navy between those that favoured centralised control following a chain of command and those that favoured allowing commanders, lead by Vice-Admiral Tryon, to use their initiative. This is one of the subjects discussed in The Rules of the Game by Andrew Gordon.

    Hey Indy and crew, I'm not sure if this will be covered in some kind of special episode after the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, but I was interested in what kind of plans Germany had for the territories it gained from Russia in 1917, and specifically Poland. I've heard of the concept of Mitteleuropa and the puppet states they wanted to create, but did the German Empire intend to annex territories directly into the Reich itself at that point in history? And if they did, did they intend to displace local populations with Germans? Love the show, and keep up the good work!

    Hi Indy, I only recently started watching your videos and I'm a huge fan of the show - I watched all 250 of your videos in a couple of weeks! I have a question for Out of the Trenches: you often talk of soldiers capturing artillery pieces and machine guns during successful offensives. I was curious as to how they were put to use. Surely there would be issues with the different ammunition types and the training required to use a foreign army's equipment. Were they used along their own equipment? Kept in reserve or destroyed to deny them to the enemy? Many thanks guys, keep up the good work!

    AYYY Verdun!.... the game not the battle.... well the game about the bettle...
    Question: What were the average life expectancies of solders during the war? British, French, German, Austrian, and Russian infantry? Did they vary from nation? Did pilots have a shorter life expectancy sorta like the helicopter pilots in Vietnam? Did sailors or colonial troops have a longer one? Love the shown! Hey great show. I was wondering, I was wondering if any Éireann (Irish) fought for the Germans, I heard there were about 50 or so but I don't know much about any Éireann (Irish) that fought with the Germans. Great show here Indy.

    To follow up on your comment about the unheard sounds of war - I've read before that the movie equipment of the day was too primitive to use on an aircraft. Between the size of film reels, and the weight of the old cameras, that seems a reasonable statement. As such, how would you recommend getting an accurate view of the war in the air? Are any particular movies or memoirs you would suggest? Thank you for the great content.

    So now that BF1 is out, have the sounds lived up to your hopes and dreams Indy? I for one love the audio work DICE and EA did with it, and personally think they made, audio wise that is, a perfect game in that respect. Especially how each different faction speaks their own respective languages One of my favorite parts is how you will be sitting in a trench (on the few maps that actually HAVE trench warfare) and waiting for the enemy, and you will hear small arms fire getting closer and closer then hear the enemy shouting in german, or turkish, italian, english, etc.
    Would be interested to know what you think of the game now that its been out for awhile.

    • @massaweed420
      @massaweed420 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, moments like when someone gets lit on fire, and you're on the "line" and just see someone running around looking like a blazing torch, screaming at the top of their lungs. That is a really chilling moment for sure. I am disappointed in a lot of aspects of the game, but I understand that DICE/EA wanted to make it more appealing to the masses, and lots of submachine guns and experimental weapons makes it far more interesting to the non history buffs.

    • @TheGreatWar
      @TheGreatWar  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, the sound is great and the fact that they included some languages. They could have worked a bit more on the dialects, but that's nitpicking.

      @timdewit6088 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just because the Schlieffen Plan didn't succeed doesn't mean that Germany could not have won the war. I think they could very well have won the war if they had managed to forge some kind of breakthrough on the Western Front before Wilson decided to get involved.

    • @mybutthasteeth1347
      @mybutthasteeth1347 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      America wasn't a major factor in Germany being defeated, more overkill than anything. Germany actually offered surrender months before the end of the war which was refused by the allies. Look up the German spring offensive though, it showed the tactic that nearly won Germany the war through clever tactics

    • @timdewit6088
      @timdewit6088 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kira ! Which is why I do think that America's involvement went a long way in sealing the deal. The British and the French were also exhausted in 1918, and the knowledge that the Americans were sending people over must have steeled their resolve much like how it degraded that of Germany. The American troops that actually fought in the war played their part, but the knowledge that more were on the way played an even larger role in ending the war.

    • @mybutthasteeth1347
      @mybutthasteeth1347 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Iron Historian American involvement was more overkill than anything. It did send the clear message that the Germans would be defeated no matter what, but Britain and France still had fighting power left, Germany had used up its reserves. It may have taken longer, but they still could have beaten Germany without America.

    Great show, keep up the amazing work! I was wondering you guys know of the videogame 'Verdun: 1914-1918'. With Battlefield 1 coming up, it might be a good way to give people info on the Great War since Battlefield 1 isn't out yet.

    Hey Indy and crew! Big fan of the show. My question for Out of the Trenches is:
    I would love to hear about what was happening in Spain during the war, and also why the country was neutral. I figured that they would be on the side of the allies [aka France], and probably could have contributed greatly toward the allied war effort, especially on the Western Front. I mean even the small country of Romania joined the war eventually, and they helped to tie down many divisions of German and Austro-Hungarian troops, softening up the other theatres of battle. So my question is basically why did the Spainish stay out of the war? Thanks! And keep up the good work yo

    • @TheGreatWar

      +Etienne SA Romania is a small country?

    • @etiennesa1723
      @etiennesa1723 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      What I meant was that Romania was far smaller nation [at the time] in compasiron to Spain, yet they joined the war. Spain could have aided either side and probably made a significant difference to the outcome of the war. My question is why did they stay out of it and what was the state of the country in general? Thanks!

      Have they done British, French, German, Italian, Austro-Hungarian or Russian specials? I don't believe they will do a special on Romania as it did become a large contributor later in the war and there will be plenty of talk about the country later on.

    What did the Hejaz Railway do during WW1! I have read that T. E. Lawrence Would derail trains on that line but not destroy the rail network. He wanted the Turks to spent time and resources on the track and allow the Arabs to slowly drain ottoman resources by derailing trains not the entire rail system. Love this show All you people are super Awesome!!!

    • @markfryer9880
      @markfryer9880 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, your right about the magazine being missing, well spotted, I had noted that it was a Lewis gun, but I hadn't registered that the magazine was "missing" until you mentioned it. The photographer must have taken the picture at the time when the number two for the gun [soldier on left] was changing over the magazines, as the number one is ready to fire as soon as the new magazine is in place. You would think that the photographer would have taken the photo when the magazine was in place and possibly did, but why was that photo not used instead of the one with the missing magazine? Perhaps cordite smoke from the firing obscured much of the image and so the clearer photo was chosen by someone who didnt recognise that the magazine was missing?

    Though a lot has changed, it is amazing how closely current US Army Doctrine small unit leader training follows the tactics and techniques developed from this era. Even when armor took the lead role, infantry and artillery tactics largely have remained the same. I don't think a German stormtrooper would feel out of place at Fort Benning(aside from the language).

    re sound.
    Artillery units set up acoustic location stations These used recording equipment and directional microphones, to locate enemy artillery units (working on the basis that sound IS directional). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound_ranging#World_War_I
    there was a documentary I saw a few years ago about the armistice, and the British have rolls of paper recording the sound volumes on when the guns fell silent. I wonder if that could be reverse engineered back into sound as the waves like just like the undulations in a vinyl record.
    That is possibly as close as you are going to get

    I have two questions for Out of the trenches:
    1. American soldiers were (in)famous for using shotguns when they entered the war, but is is there any evidence of their use by other armies before the US sent troops to France? were sporting shotguns privately used on the Western front for example?
    2. were there any provisions at all for left-handed soldiers in any of the armies? e.g. left-handed bolt action rifles. I am guessing the answer is a resounding no.

      The cost of moving that many people around was immense, so at times they didn't bother for ages. Also, war reparations were important, so holding thousands of hostages was a good way to ensure payement.
