The character Emilio was one hell of a fighter in this film. He took out several Ducky Boys in the brawl at the end even though he was 20-30 years older than they were. Unforgettable scene where he breaks off the wooden bench before the brawl so he can use it as a club.

Earland Van Lidth De Jeude (aka Terror) was not only an actor, he was an opera singer, a NCAA wrestler and a computer scientist who received his computer science and engineering degree from MIT. Despite his imposing stature, he was the nicest and kindest guy. Definitely too soon taken.

Of the three 1979 "gang" movies, my favorite has always been Walter Hill's "The Warriors," with "The Wanderers" running a close second.
I've always been a big fan of director Walter Hill - The Warriors, Streets of Fire, 48 Hours, Another 48 Hours, Crossroads, Red Heat, Southern Comfort, Last Man Standing, Hard Times, The Getaway (remake), etc.

'The Wanders' is an underrated film. The first time I saw this film (I do believe) it was on the Arts and Entertainment Channel when it was a good channel. Sometime afterwards I rented the video (VHS) at a rental video store. I always thought it was the New York version of 'American Graffiti', but with a more serious storyline, and going towards the end of the film it almost brought me to tears because of the change that was just starting out on the music scene. Not that it's a bad thing, it's just the memories of that time period that I remember when I was a kid growing up in the 60's. Definitely one of my favorite films.

I met both Cast Members of The Warriors and The Wanderers. Every one of them were nice...kind...cool and pleasant to talk to. Tony G told me some of the fight scene at the football brawl was real. Some actors took cheap shots at Tong G. and he said Lets do it for real on the next take so they fought for reals.
I remember speaking with Michael Beck about the fight scenes with the baseball bats and some people got really hurt.
Between both movies I enjoyed The Wanderers the most! Im just sad a lot of actors have passed away now.

I was 10 when this classic coming of age film was made. I've seen The Wanderers probably a hundred times since 1980 when it came out on "the movie channel". I know nearly every line. When compared to the Warriors which I also love and have seen as many times from the age of 11, till now, I'll say that both films are brilliant. The Wanderers set in a different era is more believable and meaningful to me. What incredible acting, cinematography, and soundtrack! You really feel like you're a witness to early 60s life in the Bronx with The Wanderers; to know the characters personally, to grow up in a street gang, as the times change along with the main characters. This movie is and should be regarded as an American classic! "Wanderers forever".

-Fav out of the 3 is the Wanderers. It was entertaining, had comedy, drama, & was pretty much true. NYC roughly back from 190yrs ago, through the 1840s, thru the 1950s to early 60s was streetgang capital of America, some other cities had some also. And, the Fordham Baldies weren't all bald, their big leather jackets had an American bald eagle on the back & the name. 1 was Dion Dimucci & the Belmonts. The Belmonts were actually members of another Bronx NY. gang named the Imperial Hoods who were from a section of the Bronx that Belmont Ave. ran through. Dion & them met & since there may not have been a beef between them they formed the group.

You can add Danny Aiello (3rd) to the departed count. Son of Danny Aiello, he played the Fordham Baldy who yells (if I recall)- Hey; I'm Talking To You, at Perry, pre the Leave the Kid Alone scene. Dolph Sweet played an earlier incarnation of the Chubby Gallasso character in the 1974 movie Lords of Flatbush, - another great movie that is still a favourite. Chubby's line in the Wanderers : I Did it (sex) but not with someone's daughter ... Is hilarious, as he's twisting Richie's balls for getting Despi pregnant!
I stay in Scotland, UK. This film came out in 1979, but on a very limited release. Art house theatres were the place to view it. I recall too, an alt death scene for Turkey. Perhaps the lamp post scene was cut- it's too many years in the past, but still a top movie. Agree re the comment on book to movie, however given Mr Richard Price helped shape the screenplay, he still contributed to an amazing movie....
    WANDERERS FOREVER...!

According to Ace Frehley of Kiss, the Duckie Boys were a real gang in the Bronx that were as menacing as they were portrayed in this film

Hm...never even *heard* of this film until running across this video on the YT main page. Funny how it came out the same year as "The Warriors", it definitely appears to be the same theme/subject. How have I been so familiar with "The Warriors" since its very release, but not at all with this one, I wonder? "Warriors" must have had better marketing and certainly had to have garnered more notoriety and publicity.

  • @richarddillinger8768

This movie was set in the year of my birth 1963. I believe it was the intention of this movie to point up a time of transition in the early 60s. The baldies going to war. The wedding reception scene. Following Karren Allen's character has she went to see Bob Dylan play. And Perry and the kid leaving for the West Coast. All lives change in the end. I had always assumed that Ken Wald died of cancer shortly after the series Wiseguy. I'm happy to hear I was wrong.
