@@1oldskoolluvr Nothing BUT respect and abject empathy for those wrongfully convicted and sentenced. I once wrote a paper on the right of Habeas Corpus in regards to wrongfully convicted persons in the history of the American penal system, and was absolutely appalled during research to discover that HUNDREDS of people have been proven to have been wrongfully convicted, even executed...THAT WE KNOW OF...and this was my point. We cannot logically know who was the LONGEST, because it is not possible that we know of them all. Nothing but respect, and all who are proven to have wrongfully spent incarceration time should automatically get compensation in the Millions in my opinion. Meant no disrespect.

@@billsmlth5381 What crack are you on? Also, you should probably learn by now that any statistic can be manipulated. If your society puts more effort into arresting black people over white people, guess what, that'll inflate the numbers of black arrests vs white arrests. If your society convict more black people than you do white people, guess what, that'll inflate the numbers of black convictions vs white convictions. If you're out looking for a particular type of person (black vs white) to commit a crime, well then, it's only natural that you'll be missing all the others (e.g. a long while back I remember watching a video showing racial profiling simulated, with employees following black people, but totally missing and not seeing the white people stealing because they were so focused on the black customers). Statistics are numbers capturing a detail in a very specific moment in time. Without context for how those numbers were achieved, where it derived, or what factors went into the situations creating these numbers, it's meaningless. It is still useful information but it is not God, it is not all-knowing, or all-seeing and cannot represent the totality of our lives. Just remember that. Stats only tell us a very, very small part of the story. The manipulation is not always intentional. There's a lot of unintentional bias in statistics because we are flawed human beings.

Then you've got others who spend decades of their lives in prison and are in states that have caps on how someone can be compensated. For example, here's a story of a man named Rickey Jackson that was cleared after nearly 3 decades. He's in Oklahoma, which only allows up to 175k in compensation

I just think that for them once you've spent most of your life locked up for something you didn't do, it's not worth spending what time you have left being bitter about it. You can see it with his story. He's getting up early in the morning because he wants to enjoy every second he has.
That's not meant to be an uplifting message. Because the reason he has to feel that way is because he was robbed of so much of his life in the first place.

The guy was still in prison for 39 years. I still support the death penalty and if anything know we need to make the system cheaper and more efficient.
I am not going to pretend like a system created by man will be perfect. But we are still accountable to uphold the law and punish those who break them. We know there are risks but that is why we constantly try to make it better.
I still support war to protect Western interests and general liberalism/anti-totalitarianism even knowing that innocent civilian casualties usually end up being a victim.
The world sucks, we do our best to get by and normally we do not go out of our way to be cruel. If it means we execute horrendous people with a margin of error in wrongful conviction I say it is a tradeoff I personally am willing to accept, at least for now.

This man was awarded $1.6 million dollars for his wrongful imprisonment. I do not believe ANYONE in their right mind would take 1.6 million dollars in exchange for spending 40 years in prison. What is life and time worth? Much more than 1.6 million dollars, that’s what I believe. 1.6 BILLION???? It saddens me that you assume that I'm protected or assume that I can't struggle bc of my race. Things haven't come easy to me. I've had to work hard, and it's as though you lessen my struggles or accomplishments because of the color of my skin. You and I are both women. We are all human. The part missing here is the "how could this happen" part. Nobody wants to pull out the names and faces of the people responsible for framing him 40 years ago. Likely these people were allowed to live out their lives in freedom and relative prosperity. And if ever the finger of accusation was pointed their way, well then they were just "doing their jobs" and had "made a mistake."
Nobody ever says what Police and Prosecutors did to put an innocent man away, and how that man was treated differently than other men were by the very same system. It is important to make this into a "mistake" and NOT a crime committed by wicked men, doing what they have always done for The System.

You’re absolutely correct. I’m sure there have been dozens others who went to their graves after serving longer sentences for committing no crime. God Damn America for her sins, lest she turns from her evil ways and makes reconciliation and reparations for them.

A racist, immoral, capitalist so-called justice system has many casualties like this.
The lack of care for right and wrong is dreadfully wicked.
Even when information surfaces to vindicate the innocent, many times the information is suppressed.
It must be soul suffocating pain to know you are innocent while being daily tortured. I hurt to know people suffer this way.
I wish this man wealth and happiness on earth and many crowns and mansions in Heaven.

Well justice SHOULD have nothing to do with capitalism.
But haven't you noticed that the conviction rate is FAR lower for those with money? Have you noticed that sentencing is MUCH DIFFERENT for the wealthy than for the poor?
I won't even mention the CASH BAIL system that keeps the poor in jail, while releasing the well off.
Do you realize the the prisons themselves are for profit? Prison labor...is even making $$ on the stock market.
If justice REQUIRES money...it's not really justice. It's profiteering.

    • @ReasonAboveEverything

@@Godstrumpet2010 Capitalism is the natural state of things. You want milk i sell it to you 5 liters 5 euros. A dude in neighbouring farm sells it with lower 5 liters with 4 euros. You buy his milk. You did not give a damn that my neighbour was half Black half arab amputee woman. You saw her milk to be more desirable because it cost you less. You value your work so you want to take care you spent its fruits wisely. This is just and rightfull. Now humans do love money and this leads to lawlesness. The problems you described are just a mere result of human greed. The system itself is Still just fine at the core. I want to be able to spent my money how i want to and sell what i want to whithin the law with the prize i choose to and so want you. Money is power. You too can be made to do illegal things given that the prize is right. That is evil we can not change. And often money finds those with money. Often people with large companies, known judges etc are atleast distant relatives. Many of them have their roots in nobility. Money can give you better schools, better opportunities and this way it preserves itself. We can fine tune laws but what ever system we create it will remain far from perfect. I still take capitalism over socialism and communism anyday because those did never work not even badly. Humans are morally twisted creatures. It is interesting that we even have concept of morality. Any system we create will be corrupted. Thats a fact. There is no perfect, not even close. There is only least worse. Just like democracy. It is necessary evil. Not because every man deserves to vote but because no man is worthy to rule over other man.
